Kevin Williamson's 'The Following'

I kinda want Joe to be dead. If this first season has established anything, it's that Joe's influence was far reaching, and the implications of that are also far reaching. Clearly, all of Joe's followers weren't with him at the compound, and while yes, many of his "generals" devolved into unstable screw-ups, there may very well be one out there that's get the stones, the fortitude, and the brains to fill the power vacuum left by Joe's death. Homegirl who stabbed Ryan and Claire might just decide to focus on killing Claire, leaving Ryan to get patched up (oh, he'll definitely survive!), and pulled deeper into the fight to stop Joe's cult. When Joe decided to start his cult, she was obviously one of the first, and one the most deeply imbedded in Ryan's life without him knowing her true motivations. Setting her up as the main villain for next season makes perfect sense to me.

No, Ryan has to travel into the book after him, thus having to relive the entire first season and team up with himself. Bacon and bacon versus purefoy VERSUS purefoy.

The inappropriate version of The Never Ending Story ?

I'm picturing the song playing over joe killing that chick when he was teaching Roderick in that flashback. Glorious.

how can ryan and claire possibly get out of the situation they are in? unless ryan has a gun on him or something.

Just finished this. really like the show, sucks that [BLACKOUT]Parker died tho[/BLACKOUT]

Is Purefoy gonna return for S2. Or Joe is really dead?

I'm asking because to be honest Purefoy's character was the only reason I watched the show.

The writers said he was dead but who knows if we can trust them yet. I for one hope he is.

Deadline says:

The Following is returning to its Monday 9 PM in midseason, replacing Sleepy Hollow. Because of The Following star Kevin Bacon’s agreement for no more than 15 episodes a year, The Following only can air in half of the regular season. There had been speculation that Sleepy Hollow also is envisioned as running shorter limited series-type cycles, and Fox’s schedule seems to support that

Will The Following Jump Ahead in Time for Season 2?
by Liz Raftery

Fox's serial killer drama The Following won't be back on the air until January, but the cast and crew are already at work on Season 2, according to star Kevin Bacon.

"They're in the writers room now, so I don't know if any decisions have really been made," Bacon tells TVGuide.com about the upcoming sophomore season. "But one of the ideas is to kind of jump ahead in time, and maybe find [Ryan Hardy] in a different sort of head space."

Unless he's talking about the afterlife, fans can safely assume that the stab wound his character suffered in the last scene of April's shocking Season 1 finale isn't a fatal one. (The actor also let slip that he has a six-year contract with the show.)

"Maybe he has repaired himself," Bacon speculates about Ryan's potential character arc in Season 2. "I don't know. That's a lot to come back from. Certainly there's going to be residual pain."

Bacon is looking forward to potentially introducing fans to different version of Ryan Hardy. "My dream is that we'll see a new side to Ryan's character," he said during a Q&A at the Paley Center in New York City with TV Guide Magazine last week. "I want to keep peeling back the layers of who this guy is."

Also up in the air is whether Ryan's love interest, Claire (Natalie Zea), who was also stabbed in the finale, will be returning. "Nobody has job security on our show," Bacon admitted.

But even with main villain Joe Carroll (James Purefoy) also possibly killed off in the finale, Ryan won't be able to close the case file just yet. Viewers know that many of Carroll's followers — most notably Emma (Valorie Curry) — are still at large.

"We didn't get everybody," Bacon teases. "There were a lot of people who were in that cult who got away."

What direction do you think The Following should take in Season 2? And check out our exclusive interview with bandmates and brothers Kevin and Michael Bacon, where we quiz them on how well they know each other:

A jump in time meaning more flash back scenes to push the story a bit like they with season 1.

Already signed on for 6 seasons? That's a bit aggressive. I remember the lead guy on Hawaii 5-0 signing on to a 10 (or something close it) year contract to his first CBS flop. Then followed 1 or 2 more flops before finding success with 5-0. If the Following ends earlier than planned. This could easily lead to other FOX projects. Maybe even 24.

Keck's Exclusives: Natalie Zea to Return for The Following's Second Season
by William Keck

Seems as though The Following's Claire Matthews (Natalie Zea) will survive the vicious knife attack that occurred in the season finale. The in-demand actress has inked a deal to return to the Fox thriller for Season 2. Confirming her eleventh hour contract renewal, Zea says the deal nearly didn't happen. "My concern, and [series creator] Kevin Williamson's concern, was always, is there more story to tell with Claire? And we both discovered that maybe there wasn't," Zea says.

As a result, the character was slated to be killed off. But according to sources, that decision did not sit well with Fox execs, who feared The Following would lose followers with its leading lady cut from the cast.

Hoping to maintain some of the cliffhanger's mystery, Zea won't say just how long her return will last — meaning it could be a dramatic death scene or the start of an exciting new story arc. Were it to be the latter scenario, Zea feels strongly that Claire would need to undergo a transformation from damsel in distress. "I feel like what would need to happen would be a change to her DNA," says Zea, who joins the cast of CBS's Under the Dome next month. "In other words, she might have to break bad a little bit. Although I don't know if anyone besides me would want that." .
So.... I guess that still puts her in the "possibly alive" column. That doesn't exactly help me, TV Guide! :argh:

The Following @ Comic-Con: James Purefoy to Return for Season 2
BY VLADA GELMAN

Joe Carroll lives!

James Purefoy will return to The Following for Season 2, it was announced at the show’s Comic-Con panel on Friday.

The news was revealed to a shocked Ballroom 20 crowd — the actor wasn’t part of the original line-up for the session — when Purefoy called star Kevin Bacon mid-panel and then appeared on stage as a surprise guest.

Purefoy’s professor/cult leader/serial killer was last seen getting seemingly blown to smithereens in the Season 1 finale’s fiery boathouse explosion. His remains were later identified via dental records and DNA, but we suppose someone as clever as Joe could fake those.

More to come…
I'm betting on his presence remaining on the show through Follower/Ryan-based flashbacks. Having him survive seems cheap. Granted they didn't actually show him burning, but still...

Yeah, flashbacks seems the best use of him as opposed to having him somehow escape that huge blast.

If Joe lived, it is a shark jumping moment, IMO.

More from TV Line...
Among the panel’s other revelations:

JUMP JUMP | Fans at the panel saw a continuation of Season 1′s final scene; in it, Molly repeatedly, brutally (fatally?) stabs Claire and Ryan snaps the follower’s neck then sobs over his true love’s seemingly lifeless body. Season 2 will kick off with that footage, then will jump ahead one year. The show will then become more of a “character-driven thriller as opposed to a FBI chase,” shared Williamson. And what happened in that year will affect Hardy and co. greatly. “We have the opportunity to look at what happened to those characters,” added Bacon. “Everyone is in a very different place in their lives. Ryan seems lighter and more at peace than you’ve ever seen him in the show. He’s finally been able to find something in his life that [takes him] away from all the killing and the violence.” Hmm, does that mean Claire’s not a goner? Also, expect to see lots of new characters, good and bad. (With this show’s death count, how could you not?)

JOE’S NEW REALITY | Williamson did offer up this tantalizing Joe tease: “[He] may need to reimagine who he is as a man and a killer. That Edgar Allen Poe stuff didn’t work out so well, so he’s going to have to figure out a new way.” The creator also hinted that viewers will see flashbacks to Joe’s past, exploring the questions of “How did this man become this way? What happened in his past? Where were the seeds of evil planted?”

THE STUDENT BECOMES THE TEACHER? | As for what Joe’s “absence” means for his disciple Emma, “she’ll have to learn how to live without that protection and motivation from Joe Carroll,” mused Valorie Curry, hinting that “Maybe she’s met some new friends. I’m curious to see what becomes of her when she’s left to her own devices.” And of course, Emma “lives in hope, as always” that her mentor will reappear. But in the meantime, is she the new Joe Carroll? “Nobody could ever replace Joe Carroll,” the actress replied.

BROTHERS IN ARMS | Look for Mike and Ryan’s relationship to show significant change in the new episodes. Williamson noted that he’s excited to see “what that horrific first season has done” to the partners/friends. As Shawn Ashmore noted, “Hardy and Weston kidnapped and basically killed a detainee in handcuffs. There certainly will be repercussions for that moving forward.”

Comic-Con: James Purefoy Returning to 'The Following,' Panelists Tease Season 2
4:22 PM PDT 7/19/2013 by Philiana Ng
The news came when the actor made an unscheduled appearance at the Friday afternoon panel in San Diego.

Looks like Joe Carroll isn’t dead after all.

The news came at the start of The Following’s second Comic-Con panel Friday afternoon, when Kevin Bacon received a call with the voice on the other line being James Purefoy before joining the panel.

Purefoy was not on the original lineup for The Following’s participating castmembers, which included Valorie Curry and Shawn Ashmore, and the actor’s serial killer/cult leader mastermind was presumed dead at the end of the season finale.

“Yeah, I guess he might be alive,” creator/executive producer Kevin Williamson suggested moments later, adding that Joe Carroll will factor into season two. Added a bearded Purefoy: “It’s a phoenix risen from the ashes.” At a TV Academy screening of the finale in late April, Purefoy said of his possible return, then unclear: "I believe so, but that’s not a guarantee."

As for where Joe Carroll has been all this time, Purefoy has his ideas. “I suspect he’s been doing a little bit of soul-searching,” he said. “I suspect he’s trying to see where the plan went awry. He’ll come back with double the strength I hope and double the force … He’ll have some time on his own, out of the city.”

Added Williamson: “He was a little selfish last year; he wants to get his family together and write a book. He may just have to figure out a new way and reimagine himself in a new way as a man and a new killer.”

Flashbacks informing viewers of Joe’s past should be expected. They would likely focus on family life when he was a child and as a young adult. “[We want to] explore all those areas,” Williamson said.

When season two picks up, there will be a major time jump on the hit Fox thriller. “We will jump forward a year with our surviving characters,” Williamson said, adding that the story moves away from the FBI and will be more “character-driven.”

Bacon added that “everyone we meet next year is in a different place,” with Ryan Hardy in a "lighter" place in life.

Williamson has been vocal about his love of sophomore runs on TV shows. “I love second seasons. You figure out what works and what you did wrong,” Williamson said. “It becomes a richer, more meaningful experience. You get your sea legs and you’re ready to rock ‘n’ roll.”

The extended finale scene shown to the Ballroom 20 crowd confirmed that Claire (Natalie Zea) won’t survive, and Williamson hinted that there will be major new characters joining the second season.

“No one’s been cast yet, but we’re going to have new characters, some new leads to interface with [everyone],” Williamson said, adding that some may be good and some may be bad.
I might actually be able to get over the possibility of Joe being alive if they let Purefoy keep the beard. :o:up:
