Killzone 2 showing straight after MS E3 Keynote, July 10th

Here we go...analysis paralysis!

Can you coment on what sort of build this is..like pre-alpha or beta?

Will there be opportunities for improvements for things like self-shadowing and shadow aliasing etc...?

If I am going of topic/thread just bang me into the right place...

Thanks

“1. Pre-pre alpha.
2. Please wait to see more content before judging it.”
1. Killzone 2 has been in development for about 2.5 years.
2. The developers claim this screenshot was taken saturday.
3. The developers claim the game is in pre-pre alpha.
4. Killzone 2 is scheduled to ship this year.

First of all, "Pre-pre Alpha"? What the hell is that? :woot: We're looking at a shot of the game being played. Nice try.

Second, "please wait to see more content before judging it." sounds like a lot of people are reacting negatively to the graphics, most likely because they are bad. Super-washed out textures, poor lighting and modest geometry not only don't hold up to the Killzone 2 CGI, but they're about on par with Call of Duty 2, which is a 2 year old game. This is definitely not a showcase title for the PS3.

Third and last, this screenshot has disappointed a LOT of fans. People are editing the shadows to make the lighting look better, some are saying it's a poster within the game itself, NeoGAF and ThePS3Forums are practically on fire... this screenshot is a mess and everyone knows it.

But anyway, yeah. Guerrilla misses the mark again.

Lol. Killzone does seem to bring out the rage in the Microsoft fans. I'll reserve my judgment a day and wait for more shots and videos, and form an informed opinion then.

Don't make WHF angry, you wouldn't like him when he's angry...

Well Killzone made a biiiiiiiiiig fuss about looking so great, and if he first screenshot isn't mind blowng, why not ***** at it if you hate the PS3? :p

WHF doesn't know about the GDC PSEdge demonstration and how that screenshot mirrors a scene in the GDC demonstration exactly. We'll see in 12 hours either way.

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH!

Really? Caus Guriella said that wasn't in game graphics.

I was going to say "What the hell are you talking about?" but I guess that would validate your point.

But seriously... what the hell are you talking about?

Given the tech-focused nature of the trailer, there were some showy moments that revolved around blowing out individual windows in a warehouse area, as well as another sequence that showed shafts of light coming in through holes being blown in a structure. The use of light also figured prominently into a sequence, specifically the light on a soldier's rifle as it illuminated a dimly lit area. An extended sequence also focused on assorted soldiers getting plugged full of bullets in different venues, which yielded the expected twitching and flailing. The humanoid- and vehicle-focused action was livened up at the end of the video when wicked mechanical sentinel-like creatures unfurled their appendages and menaced the camera.

GDC 07

Technically Sony said it was Killzone just a stripped down tech demo similar to what they did for Heavenly Sword (army demonstration) and 8 Days (car deformation demo).

So that begs the question, is this an up to date screenshot? The contrast is unflattering, washing out detail etc. Is it actually a 'leaked' shot from the GDC version hence the "It's a bit early" and "Pre Pre Alpha" comments from GG employees? Or is it the real deal?

Showing that shot isn't aprticularly flattering and if it is from the exact version we're seeing in half a day, it would seem a PR gaf, it would be like taking a bad shot of Halo 3.

Either way we're so close it's almost useless to speculate. If that is still Killzone, then I still think it will look good.

Toning down the graphics for smooth-display-purposes may have been needed for Heavenly Sword last year because the game was 1.5 years off, but for Killzone, a game with 2.5 years of development and is about four-or-five months from release according to Phil Harrison? That's an awfully bad sign if true. Besides, the screenshot there was taken early Saturday from the current build, according to the dev, which suggests that aside from it being what the game is looking like, that it was not taken from a nerfed-build to show off framerate. Why would you need to reduce graphics for a screenshot? Framerate doesn't come across in screenshots.

Honestly, I expect the game to look like this unless it faces a major delay.

"Ninety Nine Nights crushes Heavenly Sword"

- WHF

Anyway, yes the devs edited and confirmed it was from the latest build. But it remains a bad screenshot, you aren't going to get the real image of a game is conditions like that.

You do realize that the E3 05 trailer is impossible for even a cutting edge PC to run, no one is expecting Killzone to outright match that.

Killzone Playable Level

Matt and shoe are going to see Killzone 2. Sony's going to have a playable level, so check out their impressions at 1:00 am tonight.

Wait a second. That pixelated shadow looks kinda crappy :csad:

Not really impressed at all with the screenshot.

Also, Zenien, not to rain on your parade but I'm willing to bet there are much stupider quotes that I could dig up on you or anyone else than what WHF said. Bringing up what someone said a loooong time ago is a cheap way to give your opinion validity.

The opening was once again fantastic, but we couldn't help but sit there and think, "When are we finally going to see some in-game footage?" The only thing was that we had been looking at in-game footage. As soon as our soldier hits the ground and his gun comes into view, very much like what we saw with the opening to Resistance, we couldn't help but think, "Holy hell, all of that was in-game?"

Ok I just watched it, WOW, I mean it seriously wow. I was going into this all deflated wow that was impressive it didn't even look realtime at all 90 percent of the entire time absolutely incredible it's every little change I was looking for ina next gen killzone I wanted the grittier and darker atmosphere I wasn't it to be less Starship trooper narrative immaturity jebus incredible and I am not exxagerating one single bit.

There's nothing to nitpick, absolutely nothing.

Have you SEEN it? I didn't think something like that was possible I'm blown away absolutely floored it surpasses anything I thought it would be.

Nice! I hope it plays good.

I also hope Sony announces a price cut for Europe too so I can get a PS3...I'll get it anyway but still...

I completely agree. One thing I didn't like though was the fact that everything was gray. The lighting in the second half of the trailer made it look WAY less drab and more kinetic, but the part where the men are about to land and you see the city streets and the rooftops looked bland. Not bad looking, just maybe a poor decision in terms of art direction. Other than that, WOOOOOOOOOW. When you first see their faces at the beginning, that was reminiscient of the E3 2006 trailer. Haha, and those guys had so much personality! :woot: The second half of the trailer looked around the neighborhood of Gears of War. However, I still think that CoD4 has the best lighting in a videogame period.

By the way, Zenien, your previous post was a little frantic. Haha, but I understand why. :oldrazz:

This blows CoD4 out of the water and looks far better then Gears of War... that's strictly my opinion, but the console standard has been set, the bar has been raised way beyond what I thought possible so soon, and Killzone 2 holds that bar.

imo.
