Superman Returns `Krrish,' Bollywood Blockbuster, Pummels `Superman' in India

Krrish certainly got huge numbers on the Indian Box Office and as much as I hate to admit(being a Superman fan all the way!!), SR was simply no match to Krrish. But, it was hardly surprising since Krrish featured one of Bollywood;s most popular stars in the lead against an unknown playing Superman and in addition the whole thing became an us versus them affair and people started rooting for their own local hero creating a bit of a negative vibe for Superman. Yet, despite all that SR had a huge opening but it fell after that simply because it wasn't the Spiderman like movie that everyone expected Superman to be, full of action and humour. Sadly for SR, these elements were exactly what Krrish had to offer and add to that ground breaking visual effects in Indian cinema and you have the years's biggest blockbuster. In India hollywood movies have a limited market and the movies that have grossed the most have been family movies that have humor and action, Superman's theme was more mature and the feel more sombre making it less attractive for this demographic.

What is this dudes superpowers anyways???

His superpowers are similar to our own Man of Steel. He is fast, he is powerful, he can leap tall buildings in a single bound, he has a very high IQ, etc. I don't think he has the X-RAY vision or the Heat Vision though, or for that matter- The Super Breath.

I hope we get the chance to see it over here...at least a good DVD copy.

don't waste your time

only two action scenes are good in what is otherwise a total waste of a film.

The cinematography and some of the special effects are admittedly kick ass but a lot of the action is just so poor.

It's a complete pastiche rip off of Bad 80s anime (with the whooshing whip pan fast backgrounds while the characters remain still with major expressions on their faces) combined with equilibrium (especially where he's surrounded by villains and he starts moving all hyper fast like the flash and beating them up... complete total rip off of Equilibrium's hand to hand fight scenes and a choppy crappy copy too).

He flies in the air like a fairy... it's so so so damn obvious he's being carried by teathers, he taps his foot on the ground and leaps off and it looks really really bad in urban singapore.

Some cool sequences include his swimming scene, his martial arts display for the crowd to pitch in some money for his injured friend and a couple parts of the fight sequences

The Blue screen is awful... the CG matting work and CG imagery itself is very poor (the springing trees that hit the bad guys, so bloody poor).

To this date Indian technicians boast how they have the "latest know how and technology to match the West on some level even on a cheaper budget" yet they can't even produce special effects worthy of the original Tron. Ask them to try to do some special effects akin to the original Star Wars or ET and they'd choke. They're lazy, don't have the basic background in film techniques, and are full of themselves with so much hyperbolic praise going their way, it annoys the hell outta me.

you should see some of their statements... "Koi Mil Gaya's special effects match Independence Day shot for shot... " there are so many overpraising useless stupid statements like that that reallys how how inadequate Indian technicians are in general

Indian Cinematographers are the only technicians i can totally appreciate and respect cuz they actually learn from their forefathers in cinematography and the other legends and go to courses in the US to study some of the greats like Conrad Hall and can come up with some stunning shots on very low budgets... the same however, doesn't apply to art direction, costumes, editing, SPECIAL EFFECTS/SFX/CGI, FIGHTS (mostly bloody awful and funny), and acting

So, in other words, false marketing? Because I'll admit, from the trailers it looks pretty cool.

yes even i myself was impressed with the trailers

but it's got songs... and loads of them, cheesy corny stupidly shot songs

the entire first part he plays this tarzan rip off who lives out in some Indian grassland and trees and all this natural waterfall.

it's really ******ed, it's meant for kids... and Indian Kids that too... no point watching it

Now I really have to see this because I thought this was an imitation of Batman by the look at the costume but since it is an imitation of superman I really have to see this to get some laughs at the cheap VFx.

Hey, I agree with you on the fact that most of the movie is thorough bollywood fare but when you talk of F/X and CGI, kindly don't forget that not everyone in India has seen Spiderman, Matrix, LOTR and stuff like that. Krrish was released in more screens than any other film ever, which means that a lot of centers in semi-urban, rural India too would have seen the movie and these people would have hardly ever seen Hollywood movies and for them the whole concept was novel and exciting, resulting in the outstanding business done by the movie. Maybe you and I and other more aware and urban Indians weren't amused, but we are certainly not in the majority.

Perhaps by this point the flop heard round the world has even reached India. They're the smart ones they aren't watching it.

Or perhaps a movie made in India, by people of Indian heritage, using Indian actors/actresses, in their own language was more appealing. Nah that couldn't be it.

It's not easy being in the logical minority. Heh Heh.

You have a choice between the old traditional spoiler tag (where you have to highlihght the black bar to see what's under it)...or the new one where it is hidden from view and you click a button to make it visible.

Very nice. I like that.

One question, in the same realm. How come there is no copy and paste tool above. Unless there is an I am slow?
