Larry Fong stole my cat ;)

But yeah, Zack's a big Star Wars fan. I wouldn't be surprised if he was more hyped up for The Force Awakens than his own film! :D

That wouldn't be surprising in the least. On the BVS side, there has to be a little bit of that magic of being a filmgoer that gets lost because he's seeing how the sausage gets made.

He would be going into The Force Awakens fresh.

Color-'corrected' version of Man of Steel is making rounds and I gotta say - whatever. It is what it is, I don't like when people re-edit someone else's vision. Is it for the better this time round? Maybe, for some, in my book it was just fine the last time round... and BvS already looks so much better.

I for one do not think the "colorized" version is better. To me it takes some of the gravitas away...and we all know how Krytonians deal with gravitas...

...delicious on potatoes too.:drl:

And the "darker", de-saturated look reflects Clark's mindset more I think. Maybe I'm reaching a bit, but cinematography is an important part of establishing tone for sure.

I prefer the original coloring of MOS and that video is dumb as hell.:drl:

You are right. The color tone sets the mood. They used it like mood music. A great tool in any art form. It can give a feeling.

Remember The Wizard of Oz. B&W in Kansas, They go to full color when in Oz.

Other films do this as well. Dull color pallets when somber. Brighter when more optimistic.

The world is not always brightly lit. At night it's darker. There are shadows and "unnatural lighting conditions" All these things will give a different look in different shots. It seems some people just like every shot to look the same. I just don't think that is "realistic" and if it was actually done that way...it would look very odd indeed.

I think Snyder is attracted to the darker tones because of the CG and digital effects he needs to hide. I'm a huge MOS fan but I'd love to see the film with a more colourful grade. And I'm totally on board with the idea of trying to change Snyder's mind about how he grades the Superman footage in BVS. The couple of shots from tat recoloured looked far superior to the original.

I wrote it in the comments of that vid, but I'll say it here:

That video is like a Instragram post in motion. Meh, give me the original over this "restored" version any day of the year.

Yep, original is how we were intended to see it, for all the reasons.

As for taking the gravi away...:nuhu:

:hmr: Gravy on chicken and potatoes :hmr:

We seem to be the only two agreeing on this. I think it's even more important now with Batman showing up. They need to have huge contrast difference for their characters and their worlds. Superman is light, Batman is darkness. Don't make both have that depressing desaturated look. I love how people moaned about it for Superman Returns, yet praise it for Man of Steel. :loco: :whatever:

He isn't hiding anything in the film though. It's the color pallette and grading which are literally dark and void of color.

I think it's the realism bug he caught from Nolan, honestly. Snyder himself clearly isn't afraid to delve into a colorful world (as evidenced by 300, Watchmen, and Sucker Punch). But he probably felt that since he's going into a world which is now practically a mirror to ours, he had to tone down the bombastic visuals.

The easiest way to do that is with an overcast-like grading. And it worked for a little while. I remember how taken aback people were from the initial Comic Con footage. It definitely gave the impression of a "real-world" comic book film.

What was in fong's box?

And be careful how you answer. :cwink:

I'm not sure anything will silence that criticism because those people will always go back and bring up MOS.

Yeah, "when in doubt, quickly return the subject to MOS" seems to be their strategy.

But still, they won't be able to criticize BvS when it comes to that. Even they have to admit that this film looks more colorful than MOS did from what we've seen in the first trailer. It seems they find it to be too dark and gloomy right now, so showing them some brighter scenes would confirm that the film is not entirely dark and gloomy (which should go without saying - or "showing" in this instance - but okay...) and will kill that argument too.

They will probably find something third to ***** about, though.

It's a 2 hour+ movie. They're going to have brighter upbeats. "Dawn of Justice" is a positive title that's literally about things getting brighter.

Of course it will. And I completely agree about the second part of this paragraph, regarding the title.

I'm glad to see not everyone is drinking the "color-corrected" Kool-Aid. A Facebook friend went off on me for calling it gross, garish, cheap, over-saturated crap, tried telling me I was the only one who didn't like it. Ass.

500 000 likes... so many casuals in this world.

I say carry on, nothing interesting there. :batman:

Extreme oversaturation is neither a good choice. And why they use a shot of BvS? :funny:

Larry Fong
‏@larryfong
Fun fact: I introduced JJ and Zack over 25 years ago. We were young, and didn't know what the future held. Never give up on your dreams.

Another fun fact. Larry and J.J were neighbors.
In the late 1970s, when cinematographer Larry Fong was just a teenager, he loved to make movies on Super 8, the favorite home movie format of that time. One day, while shooting a film outside a friend’s house, a neighbor kid – also a Super 8 fan – came from across the street, wanting to get involved.
“He kept coming over and bugging us, because we were a couple years older,” Fong laughs. “That’s how I met J.J.”
