Last Action Hero

I always had a soft spot for this movie and McTiernan as a director in general. His 1, 2, 3 punch of Predator, Die Hard and Hunt For Red October is a run of quality filmmaking that stands up with just about any other collection of 3 films from any other director, IMHO. 3 great insta-classics in a row is impressive for anyone to pull off. I only wish he'd been able to maintain that quality but I know that'd be near impossible. The soundtrack for this film is great too.

I knew he went to prison, but McTiernan needs a comeback.

Yeah but it wasn't anything like violent crime or drugs or anything seedy like that. I think he was getting a divorce and he hired a PI who did some illegal stuff to help his case and he got nailed. Anyway, that's been over and he's been out of jail for many years now.

Edit: Ah, it was perjury and lying to the FBI. He did a year in Federal prison about half a decade ago. So he's like Martha Stewart.

I quite like Last Action Hero. It's something I wouldn't mind remade. There's a lot of potential that this movie didn't quite reach that could be improved upon in a remake. Except maybe the whole action hero leading man thing is sort of outdated.

Yeah, it's very much a product of its time.

They could do a remake with The Rock or Tom Cruise... They are pretty much the last ones.

I always taught the movie was very fun.

Yeah, it's a little strange McTiernan hasn't made a comeback of any sort since getting out. You wouldn't think financial crimes and lying to the cops would rise to the bar of a life blacklisting, like violent or sexual stuff.

I'd kill to see a more-grounded-than-the-Russos, really small action-thriller Cap movie by him. Feel like that ship's sailed though. But some little action flick with no superpowers or aliens or Hydra set right after Avengers and pre-TWS by McTiernan would have been amazing.

Last Action Hero's so underrated too. "You want to be a faahmah? Here's a couple of aacahs."

John McTiernan is one of the most underrated filmmakers out there, and this is his most underrated work.

It's not perfect, McTiernan himself isn't happy with the version that came out and thinks it's too long and rough around the edges, as they didn't leave him enough time to complete the editing.

But I've always loved it. It's a unique movie and incredibly entertaining. And as much as Zak Pann loves to complain about what they did to his original script, he should be grateful for the rewrites and the director's vision as they did nothing but improve it.

I can see how if you weren’t an Arnold fan or just a general fan of cheesy 80s action movies, this wasn’t enjoyable.

But I’ve grown to love it more as I’ve gotten older. The kid still annoys me quite a bit, but Arnold’s lines are classic.

I dunno that John should necessarily get all the credit for Last Action Hero, JKR, the broad strokes and concept (which is half the genius of it) was all Penn, and though Shane Black doesn't seem to have been overwhelmingly involved in it it still does seem to be full of a lot of "Shane-isms".

And man, Starlord, that poster is damn sweet. Don't think I've seen that before.

The movie is just plain fun.

I still don't understand the critics that leveled it because of things like "they didn't establish the rules about Slater's world effectively enough." That's taking things waaaaaaaaaay too seriously for a film that was mocking Arnold's own genre. The only real problem is that they mistakenly let it compete with Jurassic Park.

Slater and Danny's characters play off of each other beautifully. There is something funny about Arnold mixing it up with children (ex. Kindergarten Cop).

Stupid movie execs. Of course summer back then as a movie season was a lot shorter than today. It was basically June and July and that's it for anything truly known to be viable beforehand...pre-sold if you will. Then August got the dregs as usual. Interestingly enough though that year August got a real winner with The Fugitive. But that was an outlier.

Enjoyed it since i was 12 when i saw it in theaters and i hope Shout does a collector's edition blu-ray.

Junkfood Cinema posted a three part podcast on the movie.

Just brained up an idea for a sequel.

OK so I don't necessarily want a sequel but I just had this idea come to mind.

It would clearly have to be a play on the idea of a new Jack Slater movie coming out after a bunch of crappy sequels (yeh a bit of a piss take of Terminator) but obviously played by an old Arnie now.

I wouldnt worry about the original kid in the film coming back I would have it star a couple, either the GF or BF is super excited about this new movie and drags their partner along with them to see it even though the partner thinks it seems silly such an old guy is playing the character again.

Perhaps have the film start with the couple on the couch just having finished watched the original Jack Slater film then one of then tells the other there is a new film coming out and they have tickets.

They get sucked into the film which would have been medicore but the fan of the film wants to make sure ita great again and gets Jack Slater being a bad ass one last time.

I would have the couple be in their late 20s early 30s, something like the couple from "Save Yourselves"
