Let's not ride the bandwagon

some people that really dig a character were 5 years old in 1996, food for thought man.

And that's (in my mind) a good indicator of how much of a "diehard" fan someone is. If someone really likes Deadpool now, but refuses to go back and look for some of his earlier stuff at all, I wouldn't consider them a "diehard" in any way (they don't have to like it, but at least make the effort to check it out).

So what really defines a fan?

If you like the GI JOE movie, but you dont have a single GI JOE toy, comic, or whatever...

are you really a fan?

True, but they are fans. Just fans of the wrong thing, like people who like Peru.

I like the GI JOE movie... but i dont have a single toy, comic or recollection of watching the cartoon when i was young... so do i have the right to call myself a GI JOE fan? Or am i just a person who likes the GI JOE movie?

But if I start from this point on, buying all the toys comics, dvds... will I eventually become a GI JOE fan?

Because going by that rule, I don't think I'm ALLOWED to become a fan of anything... Star Wars, Star Trek, Batman, I wasnt even alive when these things started.

Nononono, you're not getting it. Liking only the GI Joe movie makes you a fan of the movie. Liking the movie, the toys, etc. makes you a fan. It doesn't matter when you were born or when it started.

You're allowed to do whatever the f**k you want man. Must you have a label? Can't you just be a dude who liked the GI-Joe Movie, or a dude who likes Batman, Star Wars, Star Trek, etc. and not a [insert property] fan? The moment you stop giving a damn about what other people think, the happier you will be. For instance, I feel, that my opinion, is the only opinion that matters, and if you don't agree with me, you can go suck a tail pipe for all I care, or don't. The point is, Apathy of other peoples opinions is your friend.

However, it is fun to make fun of people who have stupid opinions.

oh.

What If I like the Hulk comics... but I hate all the Hulk movies... am I a Hulk fan?

No. Greg Pak. Why are we talking about Hulk comics....

I'd say that liking the source material puts you closer to being a fan.

There are lots of people who like the Star Wars Prequel Trilogy, so they call themselves Star Wars fans when In fact they have not watched the source material (which is the Original) before.

So next time when someone asks me if I like Star Wars, do I give them the whole lecture on how the prequels are no good, or do I just say "Yes" and let them think I like Phantom menace?

Next time someone asks you if you like Star Wars, my advice is to just stare blankly at them until they awkwardly walk away.

"Do I look like I like Star Wars?"

If they say "yes", punch them

If they say "no", continue staring

Well I like the prequels, and I liked the OT. So what would you say to me?
