So far in Nolan's movies we haven't gotten to see a lot in the way of Batman's non-action related skills. We've established that he's at peak human condition, an excellent fighter, can be virtually invisible through his stealth training, and is an excellent driver. However, what about the skills he uses outside of the field? We haven't really gotten to see him do a lot of detective work, computer hacking, or crime lab work. Batman is supposed to be quite proficient in all of these things as well, but we haven't really seen him do much of it. We have no idea what Bruce majored in during his education at Princeton, but there's plenty of ambiguity there that we can believe he was studying in a field that would later help him as Batman.

Him not being actively involved with the leadership of Wayne Enterprises is certainly understandable, because he has so much time pouring into his training and ridding the streets of Gotham of crime that running a multi-billion dollar corporation would probably not fit into his schedule. However, I do think that it's high time that we saw more of Batman's detective skills and technical savvy. Maybe now that the batcave and Wayne Manor will probably be back in the third movie, we'll get to see Batman's high tech crime lab and computer systems up and running inside the cave, and he'll get a chance to demonstrate his proficiency in them. I hope so, at least.

And what about the radiated bills too?
I'd say in TDK, Batman had plenty of ideas and did his share of detective work.
In Batman Begins, Bruce never returns to Princeton to finish school. Instead, he attempts to kill his parents murderer but fails and then confronts Carmine Falcone. After that, he boards a boat a leaves America only to return after seven years. Bruce never finishes school.

I always thought the sonar thing at the end of TDK was a decent example of Batman's ridiculousness, and I loved it for that reason. The Joker's on the loose? No worries; I've built this insane device for exactly that purpose. You know, with prep-time.

Awesome.

I always saw it that Batman has an unlimited amount of money and thus an unlimited amount of resources

I think he needs to get a visor similar to the one in arkham asylum, night vision, thermal, and sonar, that has a sonar emmitor on his body, so he doesn't have the range but at least he can see through walls.

I'd like to see him do some more "traditional" detective work in the next movie, especially if the Riddler is the main villain. I'd also like to see Bruce Wayne use the Matches Malone persona to do some undercover work or something, even if just for a few scenes.

I don't think the Nolanized Batman will ever be as smart or as independent as the comic book Batman, he just isn't written that way. Nolan's Batman is heavily dependent on Lucius Fox for small things like suit modifications. I'm not saying he isn't smart, firstclassclown's post pretty much sums him up: highly intelligent, technologically proficient and a great strategist, but not the world's greatest detective, scientist, inventor etc.

I have NEVER understood why people complain about the lack of detective work in these movies; that's what The Dark Knight, and even Batman Begins, are about. I suppose to be a detective you need a magnifying glass?

Good post.

But let's not forget that in Begins, he did plenty of detective work as well.

In his study before he found the bat, research on Gordon and Rachel and Gotham goings on, leverage on Judge Faden, surveillance on Crane and Rachel in Arkham, as well as Rachel in the courthouse in disguise as a homeless person.

Plenty of detective work in both movies.

Thank you.

I did think about all that before hand and wanted to post pictures of those scenes from BB but I very focused on showing Batman's detective work from TDK. Thank you for pointing all of that out as well ;)

I have to say that I am ready for the detective work, I'm sure will be more than both BB and TDK combined, in the next film. Getting so impatient. I can't wait!

Good points, you and TheBatman072. Creating the city-wide sonar field definitely showed a lot of creativity and technical prowess on Bruce's part, and we did get to see him doing a fair bit of high-tech forensics in TDK. I suppose what I still miss is that he still doesn't have a high-tech crime lab in the cave, but maybe we'll see that change in Batman 3.

Okay...
Thanks

I'd like that too. We've seen some of his skills so far, but its a far cry from the comics version.

It's surprising to me that a lot of people seem to forget that Bruce constructed that thing almost completely on his own without Lucius' knowledge. To me that is clear indication that this Batman doesn't rely too much on Fox and is quite technologically/forensically proficient, not to mention it showcases Batman's slightly paranoid side which we hadn't see before. I could see that being argued with Batman Begins, but with TDK Batman clearly had progressed and was more on his own.
