Fantasy Live Action ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ (Universal)

There's a leaked photo of a scene with Toothless and Hiccup and it looks... pointless.

Making a live-action remake of such a recent film is weird enough, but when it's visually so close to the original, I just don't get what the interest is here.

Kids. All 4 of my girls, and my nieces and nephews are hyped for it. This and the Lilo and Stich live action movie.

And that's perfectly fine. The originals aren't going anywhere and if kids want to see it, that's no trouble.

I'm excited for this movie. I'd like to go to Epic Universe at Universal Studios next year and watch this the same weekend. They have a How to Train Your Dragon land that looks like it'll be fun.

Now you see why the remake is happening.

I don't see the point of making a live action version that is simply a copy of the animated version.

If they were going to go to the expense of doing this, why not simply do an adaptation that's more faithful to the book, which is very different in many ways from the cartoon version? Kids can always go watch the cartoon if that's the version they want to see.

Given it's being directed by the same guy who directed the original 3 movies, it's clearly his attempt to apologize for how the third movie ended. And I don't blame people for complaining about it. Hiccup has the dragons go into hiding from the rest of the world......because of one jerkass dragon hunter who got killed off right beforehand anyway? It's not like the guy threated that more guys like him were coming or anything, so why bother? They beat him, so who cares? It's just as confusing as Elsa abdicating her throne to Anna at the end of Frozen 2. It's so sudden and makes little sense for either character.

I think when it's the same director as the animated movies it was always going to be a like for like remake. I just hope at this point it all translates well.

Trailer leaked on reddit and it looks exactly lifted from the animated film. Gerard Butler is not pulling off how large Stoick is and Hiccup doesn't have the inherent kindness in his eyes. What is even the point?

The other movies made a lot of money, so I guess the head of the studio said, "Let's remake this thing, only this time in live action!"

Not that I'm defending the live action Lion King but that being more or less a shot for shot remake was at least understandable because there's only so much you can do with CGI animals. How to Train Your Dragon being a shot for shot remake is completely puzzling.

Looks fantastic. Epic Universe with this movie will be a great summer combo.

I just think it’s too soon. Like Moana, not enough time has even justified a “brand new live-action” take.

I mean, Toothless looks so much like his animated version that it doesn’t even really have the “I wonder what this would look like in live-action” factor.

This is pretty cute. I'll wait and see since I do love the animated movie.

Fun fact: during COVID I adopted two black kittens, a brother and sister, and the boy was named Fury. I thought it was because of Nick Fury but it was because of Toothless the Night Fury. I still named him Nicholas J Fury but he REALLY does look like a Night Fury lol

So... Same director, same shots, same design, same music...
This looks like cosplayers dropped into the animated version.

Maybe the movie has more to offer, but that's what they chose to advertise.

The same. But different. But still the same.

I was open to the idea of a live action adaptation mainly because I wanted to see some cool new dragons on screen but it makes no sense why this seems to be a shot for shot remake. Toothless looks so much like the animated version, its almost like it’s a fan-made AI trailer or something.

Trailer only reinforces the idea this doesn’t seem to be doing anything new justify it being in live action

Toothless looks like the animated version because he's still the animated version lol.

I wasn't even aware they were doing a "live" action version of this until yesterday, when someone on facebook pointed out the very predictable mitching and boaning some people are doing because the actor playing Astrid isn't white enough for them lol.
