Took the family on Tuesday. The first 30 minutes were a bit slow and boring, but once Hiccup and Toothless started bonding it picked up, and we all really enjoyed it. I know part 2 is in the works to release in 2 years, but after that I hope they wait at least 5 years to make part 3, to give Mason Thames and Nico Parker a chance to age up a little. I want the epilogue of part 3 to be those two actors appropriately aged.

Had a feeling they would say something like this due to the criticisms of this movie. I get playing it safe for the first movie, hopefully they then keep their word on changing things up for the sequel.

More than just 1:1, the movie felt like it had actual heart and wonder to it. While I was watching it, I wasn't constantly trying to convince myself it wasn't mediocre like Lilo & Stitch.

This was an absolute copy but like Lilo & Stitch, it had heart which is what counts. While I think the animated is better by default of it being the first, I can see the live action being the one I put on more at home.

I love Jay Baruchel but I often thought his voice sounded a little silly that it distracted me during the weightier moments of the trilogy. Mason Thames is more subdued and less funny, but I do think when the weighty scenes occur his performance is more impactful. I think I may like his Hiccup a weee bit better than the animated version.

I've got this amazing new invention for kids: it's called streaming. It theoretically makes it a lot easier to watch a movie that was made fifteen years ago. This is a theme park ad and an attempt to get in on that Disney remake money. The original movie has only made it to high school.

No one said they can't enjoy something that exists, just that it's lazy and arguing that it introduces new kids to a fifteen year old movie just sounds like an advertising campaign rather than a meaningful creative effort.

Yeah, I think it's pretty obvious that if Universal didn't have a new theme park to advertise, this movie would not exist.

For me live action will never be able to capture the same energy as animation so when doing a live action remake I need it to go somewhere the original didn’t. The best live action remakes have done that. A 1:1 copy just shows the limitations of live action and is boring.

Not like this hasn't been discussed before but I just realized that after the success of this, the odds of a live action Shrek just increased exponentially.

Yeah this was pretty much a shot for shot remake of the animated version, but it mainly kept the heart intact so I did enjoy it a good bit. Toothless I was as adorable as ever and the kid they got to play Hiccup was pretty much bob on.

Nico Parker looks so much like her mother it's distracting at times, but she has a good screen presence and player Astrid pretty well. All the cast were good really there was just some spotty CGI in bits but that's unfortunately the norm these days. The flight scenes were really well down though.

I do hope they make some deviations next time around for the sequel but also wouldn't be surprised if they didn't.
