Fantasy Live action Hercules in the works at Disney

Will this be a musical or will they go for the Mulan route??

Callaham writing and the Russo's producing makes me think that this might not be a musical after all.

Well, if it's not a musical then they might stick more to the actual myth, which isn't nearly as fun as the Disney version. And frankly I can't see why they'd bother in that case because there are already plenty of straight tellings of the myth out there.

Honestly, Aladdin (the remake) would have worked better if it wasn't a musical. They should have kept the Genie songs because of the fantastical element, and leave the other songs out (which didn't work for me in that context).

I always felt the Aladdin remake would have worked a lot better if they'd just forgotten about remaking the animated version and just made a movie based on the original story. Make the Genie a completely different character that's nothing at all like Robin Williams' version.

It says in the article that they're keeping the songs, though, so it looks like it will be more of a live action remake than, say, Mulan.

I would much rather see the Marvel Hercules show up in the MCU than this.

Personally I thought Aladdin kept a good balance of adding some new material while keeping most of the same songs. There were some things I missed like Jafar's version of "Prince Ali" and him turning into a giant snake, but at least it wasn't a shot for shot remake like The Lion King.

Since Hercules isn't as iconic as the earlier Disney Renaissance films, I'm expecting them to change a lot of stuff up while keeping all or most of the songs.

What I'm most curious about is how characters like Hades, Pain and Panic will look in live action. The original had some wild character designs.

I could see Mendelsohn as Hades if he played it as a mix of his character from Ready Player One with the campiness of Talos.

There's also John Turturro.

Meg - Julia Fox
Hades - Sam Rockwell
Phil - Charlie Day

I think they'll probably go for an unknown or up and coming actor for Hercules and names for Meg, Hades and Phil.

Rockwell would really kick ass in the role. Him or Bob Odenkirk.

Hades is the post Tony Stark role of RDJ’s dreams.

This is one of my favourites, just a story about a genuine guy who wants to do good. I really hope they keep the scene with him swimming into the river of the damned to save meg, with the life literally being drained out of him, it’s such a great scene, one of Disney’s best imo.
