Lounge of Justice - Part 90

I suspect they’ll start feeling some serious buyer’s remorse on this experiment before the year is out.

This might just be WB/AT&T turning lemons into lemonade rather than some long term model changes. I suspect it's the former.
I can see why they would put Tom & Jerry, Mortal Kombat, Dune, Godzilla Vs Kong on same day streaming (and theaterical release) but surely, The Batman and The Suicide Squad were expected to do well in theaters, why do this to all 2021 movies ?

Edit : Forgot that they have moved The Batman to 2022.

Once again if WB was smart they would stop all free trail periods for HBO Max and have people sign up for the full month. Then you would see a big jump in streaming for them.

Now would be a good time to make HBO Max international.

I think that’s the point. They still don’t have a big breakout anchor hit (though I heard Raised by Wolves does well) that makes the service a must-have. Disney+ has The Mandalorian and the upcoming MCU shows, Amazon has stuff like The Boys, and Netflix is Netflix.

HBO Max was clearly banking on Green Lantern, Justice League Dark and the Gotham PD show to be their big crossover hits, but none of those have started filming or even casting yet. So they won’t be ready for a long while.

They are probably hoping stuff like WW1984 and The Suicide Squad will be what drives continued subscriptions and gives them the growth they want.

Eh, say what you want about wb/hbomax, but tis’ is a bold power move and adds more healthy competition to the streaming wars.

They on their 2pac All Eyes on me type isssh right now. If I were them, I’d also buy out A24, just bring that weird into the family.

Sad to see movie theaters going the way of the dodo, but it is what it is.

What people also need to realize is if Zack Snyder's Justice League is a hit then you are looking at a whole other market as well when all of DC is taken to HBO Max. Remember there is still rumors of interest for Ben's Batman to have a series there.

Yeah, might not be a coincidence that they moved it.

I mean, if you think there's a good chance many of the same restrictions will be in place by next summer and that there's a good chance you won't make big bucks on those movies anyway, then why not repurpose them to get eyes on your streaming service?

Movies theatres in 2021 will be showing like 10 new big budget movies every week, whole year is overcrowded with releases, I suppose competition will be intense.

Even if vaccination is able to bring back people into theaters, the movies will eat into each other's revenue.

I doubt theatres will be in same state as they were in 2020, if vaccines are effective, people will come.

Not when it is over priced and I can watch it from my home more than once at a cheaper price.

The other Studios are still going for regular theatrical release.
Yeah but if wait 4 weeks later it will be out of VOD and streaming so what is the point. I mean the snacks at the theater are over priced. So are the tickets. So why should I go there when I can order a pizza and watch something on my 80in 4k TV and get the same experience I would get there for a cheaper price. What HBO Max is doing is smart because they are testing the waters and if it pays off best believe others will follow. Because now all you're doing is cutting out the middle man.

Keep in mind that not everyone can afford a plasma TV with audio surround systems.

Also you seem highly keen on theaters dying for some reason.

No I am not in favor of them dying but it is the same way as the VCR, DVD, Tapes, CD's. Sooner or later things will change. And if what @Black Narcissus said is true and WB stopped the free trials for HBO Max you'll see it sooner than later.

I think, for the time being, that releasing on a streamer and in theaters simultaneously should make everyone happy. I'm more of a theater person and can take precautions to be safe in a covid environment so I'm glad we at least get a choice.

Another example is this people thought Netflix would just be a fad and would fade away but now you can see Netflix was just the start and the video rental places were the ones to fade away instead. Same thing is happening with Amazon which forced a lot of retail stores to go to online shopping as well as instore shopping.
