The Dark Knight LR: Has some news for us
Again, an example please.

And i'm not talking about characters with one minute of screen time like Pyro in X1, and not when a Universe is changing with an actor like Bond/Batman.
Yes, we need examples please. Off the top of my head, I can only think of Prof. Dumbledore.

guys it wont matter that much to many people. at this point, we should just look for a good replacement.

i bet katie probably didnt wanna do a movie of this size. she has enough damn publicity, last thing she needs to be in is one of the biggest hype machines of the 2008.

John Conner in T3.

Banderas' character in Desperato

Hannibal in Silence of the Lambs

Well, Dumbledore´s recasting was forced by circumstances, and so is the case here, the actress was supposed to get back, but she turned it down, so they have to work around it. These things happen in movies all the time. Sean Young was supposed to play Vicky in Batman 89, she had to be replaced only weeks before the movie started, it´s just things you have to deal with as they happen.

Man, 11 pages allready, you guys are passionate about this.
I didn't read through everything but I thought I had heard shortly after the release of BB that she wouldn't be returning, I guess that was just a dream that has now been fufilled. The charcter pissed me off the whole movie, what was with her throwing it in Bruce's face all the time, "I got a job and your just rich." What the hell did she want from the guy, to put on a mask, cape and black tights and take down the mob boss? Oh, he did that.
Why do we need all these charcters, remember Batman & Robin.
If Montoya and Bullock are in it, they should just be cameos as a wink to the fans.
It's gonna have the Joker, that's a character that can fill at least an hour's worth of film.

Boss Maroni and Montoya? if this is true, josh lucas could be a good dent.

Yup. And honestly, I dig Michael Gambon more than Richard Harris.

joker is his ultimate nemesis. he can "fill" more than an hour. there's depth with that villain. he's not going to be like nicholson's joker. its a new interpretation but supposed to stay true to the character.

John Connor did not work whatsoever. Didn't help that the character's nature was raped by the writers. He went from being a kid who you could see had charisma to engage people to being a little whiny wimp who got his arse handed to him by Claire Danes.

Desperado is a valid suggestion, but how many of the general public had seen the low budget independent film? It's not like Once Upon a Time in Mexico had El Marachi cast.

Hannibal in Silence: Again, it's a different Universe, different director..... However, Moore in Hannibal is an example, but again I don't think she equaled Foster.

Maybe they can show Rachel in one scene, like her back only... :p

Or the movie can start off with her already dead, Joker killed her and they are recasting someone for little flashbacks or to lay down dead.

Well, I think Katie was booted, but that's just my opinion.

This won't matter at all - I'm actually looking forward to seeing someone better in the role.

Yeah Im wondering the same thing not the whole Rachel thing. Dont really care all that much because she'll have a small role like in BB. Anyways I want to know if they are talking about Boss Maroni and Montoya. Or a possible secondary villain which this film will need.

Exactly, plus there was a significant dropoff in quality from T2 to T3. And not many people had seen Manhunter going into SOTL.

*nods* Stuart Townsend was supposed to be Aragorn in LoTR and they had to recast because, apparently, he was horrid to work with.

I don't think anyone disagrees that Viggo was the superior choice.

I understand why Rachel's re-casting is annoying but while people will notice, it's not as bad as having to recast characters like Gordon and Bats himself.

Kate reeks of bad pub.

Also she has been converted to insane, so is probably harder to work with.

Well, even though I'd disagree with that, it's not like Katie Holmes set some standard for the next actress to live up to. She was terrible. Whoever they cast will undoubtedly outshine Holmes, so it's not like we need be concerned in a drop of performance quality.

did anyone post this yet?its on the front page
Holmes' Spokeswoman on The Dark Knight
Source: The Wall Street Journal January 26, 2007

A spokeswoman for Katie Holmes has given The Wall Street Journal a comment on why she won't be returning as Rachel Dawes in the Batman Begins sequel, The Dark Knight.

"We never got to the negotiating stage" for the film, said Julie Polkes, Holmes' representative. "Katie was offered ["Dark Knight"] but was unable to accept the role because of scheduling conflicts. She was in the process of negotiating for another project.

Instead, Holmes will star in "Mad Money" with Queen Latifah which starts shooting in a couple of months with a budget of only $12 million.

No offence, but one hand you say that recasting Rachel won't work and on the other hand, Nolan is saying it can work on the basis that he is going to do so.

Um...Sorry, but I have to go with Nolan on this one.

Back to the Future: Martys girlfriend
Back to the Future: George McFly
Matrix: The Oracle
Hannibal: Lt. Starling

Glad Matt Damon dropped out. I sure didn't want to see him as Dent.

I rather they write-off the character, AND/OR, make up some story about her having a sister/cousin (or someone similar) take up the vacancy.

So say Dawe's character dies at the hands of the joker, her sister comes to Gotham to investigate her "death". It makes sense to kill Dawe's character, because it would be "out of character" for her to simply leave Gotham after devoting much of her life to it. At least this way, the sister can bare some "similarities" to Dawes, while offering a convenient new love interest.

Another way to write her off is if she has a child (marriage/bf). She thinks it would be too dangerous to raise it in Gotham given the enemies she has. But I don't think this later explanation would work well, because why would she risk this in the first place given her position? But it would be a rationale exit strategy for the character.

If they recast OR replace her with someone of a similar mold, I hope they get Jennifer Connelly. Her associations with the Hulk franchise is not a big deal, seeing they are doing a loose sequel/restart.

The sister/cousin idea may be the worst suggestion ever.
