Luke Cage Luke Cage General Discussion Thread - Part 1

The tone is DEFINITELY more upbeat than Jessica Jones. JJ got REALLY dark and heavy at times to the point where it was almost uncomfortable. LC is definitely the "lightest" of the Netflix series so far.

I'm sorry guys, I'm not getting the Blaxploitation feel that you guys are getting. The music? Maybe a little. But a lot of the music is very contemporary or throwback to 90's hip hop. Black Dynamite is a blaxploitation homage, this definitely is not. This is nothing like Superfly or Shaft or Foxy Brown or any of those low rent (but awesome) 70's flicks about jive talkin badass mofo takin' it to the man. This feels very much like a modern African American drama set in modern day Harlem.

Like I said, it's just the music and the few nods here and there with the dialog (like that quote from "The Mack"). The plot is actually similar to Daredevil Season 1. It's just a show that's unapologetically steeped in Urban Blackness. It's not remotely as "Over the top" or "Cheesy" as some people are claiming.

I loved the first half but the second half, particularly the last couple episodes lost steam with me more than any of the other shows, Diamondback quickly got boring, Cottonmouth was a much more interesting villain, the final fight was weak and the finale lacked a satisfying end for me. Felt like they were intentionally holding back for Defenders instead of focusing on a satisfying conclusion. I also wasn't a fan of the Luke/Claire romance, they lacked the spark that was present with Misty and Jessica.

This is my take as well. I still enjoyed it but it's not the 2nd coming or anything.

I loved the ending after the awkward fight. It picked up for me after Diamondback was sent packing. Stokes was a much more interesting villain, no doubt. Shades & Mariah are going to be a formidable duo for Cage.

Like JJ, Cage felt a couple of episodes too long. It just didn't feel as drawn out as JJ did. Maybe because it wasn't as "dark"?

Still an overall great show.

I'm trying to figure out what, outside of Diamondback's "power suit" and the "Luke" cheers was cheesy about the show?

I know it sounds crazy, but it was probably the most "realistic" of the 3 Marvel Netflix shows.

I agree. The Diamondback fight and the acid dip surgery are the only 2 things that had me cringing like nails on a chalkboard. Everything else was pretty straight forward and "in-bounds". But we all know how opinions go....

Who watches these shows for realism?

Netflix Marvel shows are a little more grounded than the movies or agents of shield but they still have fantastical elements. These show still feature Zombie ninjas and Alien bullets.

Cheesy isn't even a bad thing when done right. Alan Rickman deliberately hammed it up as the Sheriff of Nottingham in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and most people agree he was the standout part of the movie.

Agreed

What I thought was "cheesy" was mainly just a lot of the dialogue

It seemed like several characters were reading out of a "Cliched Movie Quotes" handbook
And Claire called Luke out on it a few times, which was good, but literally every line out of Diamondback's mouth made me cringe

The music in this show is so good. Especially the stuff that plays in Cottonmouth's Club.

I jsut watched the first episode and thought it was dull so I started watching some other thing I can't remember. After I'm done with it, should I pick it back up?

Loved JJ and DD, but episode 1 didn't seem to go anywhere.

Be kind to me.....

I think you need to give it a few episodes to pick up. I think once you get to around episode three things start getting good, but it won't be for everyone. Definitely give episode 2 a go, at least.

Cool. Thanks for the info. I'll definitely go back. DD and JJ pretty much came out of the gates running (though DD in particular really picked up some steam). I LOVE Marvel stuff so I'm sure I'll like it. They've done a great (not good) job on their Netflix work.

Yeah I'd say episodes 3-7 are fantastic, ya just gotta give it some time to get there
1-2 and 8-13 were good but not great, imo

music in this show is fire my favorite is

Jidenna - Long Live The Chief

I saw jidenna perform live this summer, guy is great ball of energy and animation.

Just finished it. Overall, a solid show The writing got really sloppy in the second half of the season and there was a drastic tonal shift in the show but I thought it ended strong and leaving things in a good place for the future of Luke Cage's world.

Can't wait to see how Luke interacts with Matt and Danny and also see what his relationship with JJ will be from here on out. I'm still rooting for those two, I think they're soulmates.

This show had so many former The Wire actors in it.

Don't know if this has been posted, but Mike Colter was live on facebook, with Krysten Ritter, Finn Jones, and Charlie Cox joining in.

Ritter, Jones and Cox sure like saying dude :woot:

They all seem excited to do the Defenders.

Cool that the other defenders are all watching each others shows.

The first 7 episodes were awesome. Diamonback was cliche, unoriginal, and lame. He is easily the worst Netflix MCU villain. However, while episodes 8 and 9 were trending the show very downward, the show did manage to get better. The show was very cheesy at times, but mostly in a good way. Though episode 13 was a tad TOO cheesy. Overall, i would say weakest Netflix season so far, but show was still enjoyable. Solid B.

If there is another season I would like to see Wesley Snipes play a villain in the show. He could maybe play John Bushmaster.

Maybe it's just me, but I'm almost done with the season and I feel like this series is a notch below both DD and JJ overall. I'm kind of surprised by all of the over-the-top praise this series has gotten so far.

Agreed. It is a good show, but Daredevil amd Jessica Jones were better
