March 2011 Solicits

The art for AVENGERS: THE CHILDREN'S CRUSADE was started so long ago, i.e. the project began so long ago, that the "editor's notes" for the first issue more or less implied that asking Cheung to re-draw pages due to costumes not matching up would have taken too long. As it was, this project very well should have launched around 2005-2006. The roster of the Avengers is very much pre-CIVIL WAR in terms of the art and script. Heinberg edited his script a bit to make it seem post-SIEGE, but Steve Rogers is still Capt. America, Iron Man is in his Granov suit and heck, whatever happened with Wonder Man in the AVENGERS relaunch isn't really touched on. Marvel would deny all this, of course.

Hahaha, is that why you said Jimmy Cheung draws it well Corp? Guess he didnt get the memo...
No, he drew the Heroic Age promo pic with Iron Man, the Thing, Gorilla Man, and some others. Iron Man was in his new costume in that and it looked really good.

Oooh yeah, that promo pic. Almost forgot bout that. Yeah he did look great in that.

Has the Avengers Childrens Crusade really been in the works that long? Has Cheung been drawing it all this time?

He is slow, but it's not really his fault. The writer, Allan Heinberg, also writes for TV shows, which he prioritizes above his comic work. His short Wonder Woman run was incredibly delayed too.

Heh, sometimes i wonder what these guys' contracts read like: " As long as you produce a script and/or artwork sometime before global warming destroys us all, you will get paid." lol

Eh, for guys like Kevin Smith and Allan Heinberg, getting paid isn't really a big part of the process. They deign to write comics for love of the characters, which is admirable in its own way. Unfortunately, it translates into not giving a s*** about deadlines, which trickles down to us in the form of laughably late issues.

Kevin Smith got me to the point where I just stopped buying anything he wrote. I don't think I've bought a thing since Spider-Man/Black Cat got delayed. I never even finished that mini out when it WAS finished.

I, fortunately, didn't even start that one. I was done with Ultimate X-Men by then and Ultimates 2 was running far behind when that was going on so I was already done with that before Ult. Wolv. and Hulk became an issue.

To be fair to Kevin Smith, he's become far more consistent with his comic writing than Heinberg. Yes, DAREDEVIL: TARGET will never be finished, but he's done several Batman comics for DC and completed all of them. Hell, I could argue he's actually finished more of his recent comic book runs than JMS has. His recent GREEN HORNET series was based on a rejected film script, but that's completed, too.

Heinberg, meanwhile, ended the first volume of YA with delays, some of which may or may not have been his fault. Then his WONDER WOMAN arc was late. He co-write an arc of JLA with Geoff Johns before that, and I'd wager Johns did at least 51% of the work. And, naturally, CHILDREN'S CRUSADE has probably been in the works at least in some stage since 2006, I'd say. The roster of Avengers in the script are right from that era. The script has been edited to reflect the times, but Cheung had already started work and they likely didn't want to scrap those pencils, since he's no Mark Bagley.

Oh yeah, forgot about Smith's Batman minis. I read one, the one with Joker and Onomodopia. I didn't like it, though I thought Onowhatever was pretty cool.

It's the lack of professionalism and implied snub to the industry that bother me. Yes, I understand that writing for television and movies pays these people's bills so they get top priority, but that's still no excuse to treat the comics industry like it's not worth their time. If you're committing to write a monthly comic, meet your deadlines and get the thing out monthly or just don't even bother writing comics. Treat it like you would any other job.

Indeed. I mean, Robert Kirkman did write for his WALKING DEAD TV series this year, but he still put out 7 issues of INVINCIBLE as well as working on several other Image comics.

I'm interested in Invincible Iron Man due to Doc Ock's involvement. I usually think its fun when a hero fights one of the major villains of another hero.

He and Adlard have been rock-solid on putting out The Walking Dead on time, too. A couple years ago, they started lagging behind on it, but they recommitted themselves and actually made an effort to pick up the pace and, lo and behold, they did it and have kept it up ever since.
