Mario Kart Wii to feature 16-person online multiplayer
This is going to be awesome. Fans of Mario Kart and people who still possess the capacity to enjoy things just received tentative confirmation that their futures are going to be so bright that they'll need sunglasses. The source? It isn't new-fangled space drugs or mind-porn this time around, but Mario Kart on the Wii, online, with a maximum of 16 players.
Battle Mode will be available online as well, although whether or not we'll be able to take part in massive 16-player brawls in Battle Mode remains to be confirmed.
The news was featured in a scan of the original Official Nintendo Magazine on the site Go Nintendo. What else did the article mention? Well, there will also be in-air stunts and updated versions of Mario Kart DS tracks.
It's good to see Nintendo really beginning to implement internet connectivity into their new titles. The company was really weak on the online arena for a long time, with both Microsoft and Sony pre-empting them with an online marketplace component. Perhaps this is a sign of the times however? Either way, more online is more better. Gamers can look forward to Mario Kart Wii around Spring 2008.
You know, I wish that characters from other Nintendo franchises (besides Wario and Donkey Kong) would appear in this game (like Link, Samus, and Fox).
So. Link, Samus, and Fox fighting Mario looks rediculous also but look at how awesome it is.
How dumb would it be having Link, who isn't comtemporary, driving a cart? Or Samus, or Fox, would own spaceships, driving carts that go 80 mph?
Mario Kart Wii Features 12-Player Online Races
Reggie's E3 comment finally makes sense.
By Steve Watts, 10/11/2007
At E3 2007, Reggie Fils-Aime introduced Mario Kart Wii with the ambiguous comment that more racers equals more fun, teasing that we'd have to wait to find out more details.
Nintendo's Japanese press conference may have solved that mystery this week, as CEO Satoru Iwata said that the online competition in Mario Kart Wii will be bigger than the DS incarnation by allowing 12 online racers to compete, and hinting at a more streamlined matchmaking process -- no friend codes, please!
^So the confusion wasn't due to the 100 proof liquor coarsing through your veins?
Surprisingly, it wasn't
We just swore more at the atrocity of Pacman, if I was sober I'd still be confused, but the alcohol fueled the anger.
anyone else hate Nintendo naming their games after their system? They did it all the time with teh various versions of the gameboy and now DS. They did it with the SNES, 64 and thankfully they didnt with the GC but now they are with teh Wii. I dont know it just sounds so cheesy

Mario Kart Update
New courses, online details, and Mii support!IGN Wii
by John Tanaka
February 6, 2008 - With Smash Bros. at last out (in Japan, at least), Nintendo appears to have penciled in Mario Kart as its next big title. We're assuming that much, considering the unexpected blowout on the game in the latest issue of Famitsu.
The Wii installment of the cart racer that started it all looks like it's going to have lots of variety. Famitsu reveals a total of 32 courses, with 16 remakes of old courses, and 16 completely new courses. New courses include Mario Circuit, Momo Country, Kinopio Factory, DK Snowboard Cross, Coconuts Mall, Kinoko Canyon, and Luigi Circuit.
Some of these courses will put a new feature of the karts to use: mid-air tricks! Karts and bikes are both capable of performing actions and tricks in the air. Get a trick just right, and your cart will perform a dash upon landing.
In addition to a ton of content, Mario Kart Wii will have some serious multiplayer options. The game will include Wi-Fi based play for up to 12 players. You'll be able to select to play against players from throughout the world, players in your country, and players on your friend list.
As part of the new network mode, Nintendo will be making use of the Wii's Channel interface in yet another unique way. We're not sure of the specifics, but it seems that you'll be able to install a Mario Kart Channel to your Wii hub to view world rankings as well as your own records.
Going along with the Wi-Fi multiplayer play, Nintendo will be giving players a means of customizing the game. You'll be able to make your very own Mii ride a bike or kart, adding that bit of you to online races.
The online mode will also expand the single player fun. The game will offer downloadable ghost data, so you can play against some of the best players.
Not big on the whole internet thing? In addition to the Wi-Fi play, the game will also let players play together the old fashioned way: through split screen for up to four.
With this Famitsu blowout just hitting Japan, we expect the Nintendo marketing machine to start getting into gear and remind everyone why Mario Kart is so great. If, as a part of that initiative, we get a chance to sample the Wii installment in advance, you can be sure we'll let you know.
