Homecoming Marisa Tomei Is Aunt May!

Here was the issue with Hank and why i ended up being ok about...

1) Hanks a "fall" guy with alot of baggage and issues in the comics... he's very complex, but not all that fun or interesting. keep in mind the outrage if the press in the media dug into his abuse history... it's bad PR for disney and marvel

2) they didn't want 2 ant-men in the same time period.. and felt Lang's was more compelling and entertaining. So they wanted to tell his story.. you can't tell his without the Pyms... so they sorta hit a road block...

3) keeping hank old, means he still was ant-man (like the comics) and still had his "Tales to Astonish"

4) next comes Hope/Janet... Janet is the far far far far far more well known and very much beloved character... but they couldn't make Janet fall for Scott (people would complain), and they probably felt it'd be a bad move to make Janet the daughter... in case someone picked up the books and saw Hank and Jan were an item... it'd be creepy. and it's just simply more reasonable and honorable to again, the fans; to make Hank and Janet together... honoring the comic book characters pasts... while still having a "Wasp" who is essentially ripped completely from Janet of the comics.. but with a different name.

so to me, they made the best compromise of honoring the characters entire 60+ year history.. while also keeping things fresh and new.

Marvel has essentially done this with every character so far.. so i expect the same from Aunt May and the rest of the spidey universe.. they will take the best of the entire 60 year characterizations of characters.. while honoring the 616 universe they were birthed in... and updating the things that need to be for todays world.

But just as they've done with Hope and effectively separating out Janet's character, they could've done the same with Ultimate May and 616 May by making one the daughter of the other, both sharing the same first name. Then we could get 50 year old Aunt May and 75-80 year old Great Aunt May. That would allow fans to still feel they have the elderly, frail old woman with May Sr but also have a younger mother figure with May Jr as well.

they wont do the daughter stuff.. it's overly complicated fluff that serves no purpose.

there's no reason to have 2 aunt mays...

We already know this series will be taking a lot inspiration from Ultimate Spider-Man. Feige mentions it countless times when talking about the High-School aspect of the character, and with the casting of Marisa it is now even more apparent.

Looks this is might be the ONE thing DBS got right.

... i don't give a hoot what isn't important to people who don't find anything important.. these films would't be made if it weren't for the 60 years of fans.. and EVERYONE knows Aunt may is of older age..

hate to break it to you but most people (especially those with dark hair) start going grey in their 40s (if not sooner) but news flash.. many people color their hair now.. it's not unbelievable for Marisa to have a little grey in it...

I think her face looks perfect for how may is currently portrayed, as i said before they've de-aged her in the 616 universe since she returned from the dead... she just needs some grey/white hair added and she's perfect to me. As a fan.. that's what i'd personally like. No need to argue about it.

and ps. in 2015 we have plenty of young women dying there hair grey.. its a weird trend going around along with septum piercings...

I said that in my post. And I know middle aged women have grey hair. Men do too. Im not even middle aged and Ive already found grey hairs on my head. My point was that a lot of women dye their hair these days and many dye away their grey. So if Marissa's Aunt May doesnt have grey then its not a big deal. This Aunt May simply either has good genes or is just doing what a lot of middle aged women are doing and dying her hair . Hell, even my 70 year old grandmother dyes her hair. So if Aunt May doesnt want to have grey hair then bah gawd that's her 'Murican right as a not real free independent woman!:p

Just so we are clear, I dont care one way or the other. And you yourself I dont have an issue with. If you like her having grey thats perfectly fine. You dont seem to be losing your mind over all this so I dont have an issue with you. My irritation about this whole thing is really over the fans who are acting as if theyve made Aunt May into Peter's hot kissing cousin. Its not that bad and not even that sacreligious. The comics have offered a number of iterations. This is just one more. And we just dont know yet. They may give her some grey. They may not. Lets all just wait and see how she actually appears in character before we get upset.

I still say tomei is a good actress and a solid addition to the mcu. I can't wait to see what she looks like and how she will take the character. Sure I would have loved folks like streep, curtis, and a few others. Though tomei is still a great pick to actually land.

As for looks they can easily make her look a little older some more wrinkles, some grey in hair like sally fields did. Type of cloths she wears. We just don't know what they are doing yet.

As for this crazy talk of doing a great aunt may. There is no need. I am sure they will take the best elements from 616 and the ultimate. To make the mcu may a new and interesting take. Take the best stuff like doting aunt who worried for peter from classic, and the more hardass from ultimate. Maybe throw in a minor not major life threatening medical condition. To throw in another classic element.

Also no to may being blood relative. That makes no sense. She is from the O'Reilly fanily. And ben and Richard are only blood relatives with Mary being a fritzpatrick. No need to make crazy changes to mythos.

Harry where does kevin talk of ultimate. I never seen him specify any thing from usm. He talks more classic in all interviews I have seen. If anything from USM happens it be the usm comics and not the toon.

How old was Peter meant to be in the Tobey Maguire films? Rosemary Harris was 74 at the time.

Obviously, it starts with him in High School, but I'd argue it quickly makes him College age (which is only a year or two different). Maybe four years older than Tom Holland's version as a sort of "average" Maguire Parker.

It would've made more sense to be Peter's grandmother. But they could've made her his Great Aunt if they really wanted to avoid a grandmother, and he could've just called her "Aunt" for short, since he wouldn't have said "Great Aunt". Ben and May could've been Richard's Uncle and Aunt instead of brother and sister-in-law.

They could, but that would also be a change from the comics.

It's possible to be charitable to Steve Ditko. Back in the day (i.e., the Great Depression), it wasn't uncommon for parents to have many, many kids so some children would be 10-15 years younger than the eldest. It's possible to imagine a scenario with Uncle Ben like that (I don't recall either the Parkers or the Reilly's being shown to have a significant number of siblings). Or marriages of older men to younger women weren't uncommon, so Peter's dad could be significantly older than his mom. All these concepts seem dated, though, and I really just think they didn't think it through. Given that, if thinking it through leads to a younger Aunt May, it makes some sense to me.

I think the bigger deal is that they cast a New Yorker. That I'm excited about.

This is the exact response I got four years ago when I first suggested that May would be even younger the next time round and that the traditional May is way too old. At the time though, nearly everyone was against me and that view and were suggesting it was some kind of fetish to have May as an attractive younger woman or that I was trolling. Now it seems that a lot more people have come round to it, at least on this forum and even seem to be okay with the casting of Marisa, which is exactly the way I predicted it would go back in 2011.

And now the so-called "trolling" back then has become the majority view now.

Not entirely. While I was hoping for a younger May than normal, I wanted a different type of actress who might seem more Irish American than Italian American. I would've preferred someone like Naomi Watts, Lea Thompson, etc. I don't know if she can still be a May Reilly, or if she'll have to now be May Reali.

You know, I was kidding around, when I said since I wanted Kevin Kline for Uncle Ben , they could cast his wife Phoebe Cates as Aunt May. They didn't do that.

They went younger...

I think folks really need to chill. We got a solid actress for may. And we don't know any story beats, how she will look or act yet in the role. So to we do chill out everyone.

Phoebe Cates might have to be May Rei Li to account for her Asian look.

This thread needs more hot pics of Marisa. :ninja:

So we can all drool over Aunt May.

And that is not how may will likely look in Sm. She will probably be more homey and natural looking some grey hairs and all that.

As may she likely look more like this:

And not super hot and made up.

Probably similar to Diane Lane in Man of Steel.

Although they used normal-looking Diane for the flashbacks, and older Diane for the present day. However, I don't think they'll be having flashbacks for Peter here for when he was younger. That would be way too much like Amazing Spider-Man. So maybe Marisa could just have her normal look.

so brothers married 2 sisters in the ultimate universe? thank god that universe is ended... no way they will copy that.. that's like Home School kinda of creepy
I don't mind the idea, and it was only referenced once.

And I doubt it be used in the movies. Why would that do that and make un needed changes to family dynamics.

ben and Richard are blood brothers. Ben married may from the orielly family. Richard married mary from the fritzpatrick family. Again we don't even know what stories or plot involving the family even ever be used.

As a former home schooler, I'd love to know what the hell that's supposed to mean.

There is no need for her to have added grey hair or wrinkles. She's playing a character her age and women that age now routinely dye their hair and often stay in shape and look fantastic. Why can't she be attractive and 50 when Tomei is exactly that - attractive and 50? Why play into outdated stereotypes that mother figures or women past 40 or even 30 (according to much of Hollywood) turn into sexless frumps?

Well its not like they have to have her whole hair grey a few strains here and there, not all make up down and all yhst. She probably look more natural then say any of those staged hot photos of Marisa.

You've never heard a joke like that? It basically means a little awkward, sometimes "brady bunchy" ive got nothing against home schooling but for instance i had a friend who he and his family was (4 siblings) k-12 i went over one day and the family litterally brought out tamberines and drums and sat in a circle and. Egan singing "kumbaya" it was very addams family values "harmony hut" the kids turned out great though and im still in contact with him. But yeah, there's a little bit of a stigma of homeschooling, at least when i was a kid. I mean no offense

I just think its a nice touch. She doesnt have to be frumpy... look at vanessa on DD... may has a labido and is spunky even in the 616 universe.. grey or white in your hair doesnt automatically = frumpy and sexless. But lets also not forget... a major dynamic is $$$ issues for pete and may... she shouldnt have the funds to be dolled up all the time either. Shed sacrafice that for raising peter and putting food on the table

Hair color is less than $10 a box (the cheap stuff is $3) and clothes that fit and or flatter cost as much as layers of shapeless sweaters and granny pants and skirts. But if one wants to look at broader economic issues - looking younger makes it easy to get and hold a job in this ageist society.

She's not 80. There's no need make her "spunky" as if she's oh it's so cute she still has a libido at her advanced age. She's the same freaking age as RDJ and just 2-6 years older than Ruffalo, Renner and Bettany.

You dont really get it... looking great does not convey barely making ends meet. Is it possible? Sure. Is it good for story telling? No.

I swear are some of you so hot for MT that you cant just stomach her with any form of age makeup no matter how minor?

Couldnt she *gasp* play a strong willed beautiful woman with grey hair too?

Grey/white hair does not = unattractive.
