Here was the issue with Hank and why i ended up being ok about...
1) Hanks a "fall" guy with alot of baggage and issues in the comics... he's very complex, but not all that fun or interesting. keep in mind the outrage if the press in the media dug into his abuse history... it's bad PR for disney and marvel
2) they didn't want 2 ant-men in the same time period.. and felt Lang's was more compelling and entertaining. So they wanted to tell his story.. you can't tell his without the Pyms... so they sorta hit a road block...
3) keeping hank old, means he still was ant-man (like the comics) and still had his "Tales to Astonish"
4) next comes Hope/Janet... Janet is the far far far far far more well known and very much beloved character... but they couldn't make Janet fall for Scott (people would complain), and they probably felt it'd be a bad move to make Janet the daughter... in case someone picked up the books and saw Hank and Jan were an item... it'd be creepy. and it's just simply more reasonable and honorable to again, the fans; to make Hank and Janet together... honoring the comic book characters pasts... while still having a "Wasp" who is essentially ripped completely from Janet of the comics.. but with a different name.
so to me, they made the best compromise of honoring the characters entire 60+ year history.. while also keeping things fresh and new.
Marvel has essentially done this with every character so far.. so i expect the same from Aunt May and the rest of the spidey universe.. they will take the best of the entire 60 year characterizations of characters.. while honoring the 616 universe they were birthed in... and updating the things that need to be for todays world.
But just as they've done with Hope and effectively separating out Janet's character, they could've done the same with Ultimate May and 616 May by making one the daughter of the other, both sharing the same first name. Then we could get 50 year old Aunt May and 75-80 year old Great Aunt May. That would allow fans to still feel they have the elderly, frail old woman with May Sr but also have a younger mother figure with May Jr as well.
