Marvel Comics Solicitations - September 2012

I wonder if Cyclops fighting Emma means AvX might result in some level of reform for Scott. That'd be nifty. I'd love to stop hating his crazy ass.

Ick, new Nova. Do not want.

Secret Avengers is back on the Shadow Council. I hope Remender wraps that up and moves on. I'm pretty sick of that plot and Max Fury.

Dang, I just tracked down a Silver Surfer: Rebirth of Thanos trade to get Thanos Quest #1 and 2. I wish I'd known a new printing were just a few months away.

Haha, Venom, the dark mirror of Spider-Man, now has a dark mirror himself. Fun. But hopefully Bunn will make it interesting.

Sad that Captain America & will feature Black Widow soon. I may just drop it for that arc. I've never really liked her since she's much more a murderous, amoral spy than a hero, but I really can't stand her now that she's torturing people on the Avengers' behalf. It's Iron Man recruiting Wolverine all over again. Captain America, of all people, should not be cool with her if she's doing s*** like that.

"Everything Burns" sounds like a monstrously drastic improvement over the flaming turd that is the current Thor arc. Glad to see Carmine Di Giandomenico sticking around on JIM, too.

Another Captain Marvel solicitation, another nudge in my mind toward skipping the series altogether. Good thing you've got those guns there, Carol. Not like you have pretty high-level powers or anything.

Scott Lang in Defenders! I may try that series out when he joins.

Hawkeye definitely looks slick and intriguing, but I have pretty much zero confidence in Fraction at this point. I plan on reading it anyway, though.

That second Punisher cover damn near makes me cry. I was really hoping Frank wouldn't wind up killing Rachel for a while, at least.

I don't feel like typing my thoughts on the solicits right now but I did notice that Thanos Quest is being re-released. A lot of folks around here ask about it so they should probably keep that in mind when September rolls around.

I think I missed August's solicits, but whatever. I'm always full of cynical rants.

- Is Cyclops wearing a thong? It looks like he's fighting with Emma and the Phoenix stuff will consume the rest of the event. I still don't see what role Wanda is playing besides her cameos here and there. Also, Cyclops' Phoenix visor totally reminds me of Robocop's visor a little. "Dead or alive, you are evolving with me!"

- SECRET AVENGERS looks like it is back to form after what has been a very underwhelming AVX tie in. In fact a few books lose the tie-in and I welcome it.

- Thunderb -- I mean DARK AVENGERS, chugs along with a guest artist and a vow that it's already being destroyed. "Defining chapter in the DARK AVENGERS legacy"? Dude, even including the Bendis run, I don't think there'll be 18 issues of that legacy by now?

- AVENGERS ACADEMY is a good book overall, but it has lost it's way a bit during the crossover, but this incoming arc looks to get things on track with the Jeromy Briggs subplot and focusing on the core characters.

- ASM introduces a new character in time for the 50th anniversary, eh? Color me curious. Slott hasn't been afraid to introduce new characters, and I am curious about how or what this one is.

- AVENGING SPIDER-MAN seems to continue this awkward existence of not having a reason to exist. Without Zeb Wells it has no long term writer, and 2 out of the last 3 issues have served as obligatory crossover chapters. Now we get Spidey teaming up with Deadpool, which has happened a dozen times in recent years. Really, what's next - Spidey and Wolverine? Get creative, damn it. Pair him with Phone Ranger or something. Or use the book to revive some mishandled characters like El Muerto, a luchadore superhero who was too much of a jobber to be awesome.

- SCARLET SPIDER will continue with Khoi Pham, and I do like how Yost remembers the actual Texas heroes in the Rangers, who are all mostly full of awful stereotypes. Cowboys, Indians, Armadillos, etc.

- Cullen Bunn officially takes over Venom and it seems that Hellstorm from the "CIRCLE OF FOUR" story gets a symbiote of his own. Bizarre, and I'm not keen on symbiote stuff taking over. I am also curious about Bunn introducing a Mary Sue reporter when Betty Brant should be around, but we'll see how SAVAGE SIX ends.

- CAPTAIN AMERICA sounds fine, but WINTER SOLDIER as usual seems more bad ass. I've noticed Bunn is co-writing the former and not the latter, which I think is a tell tale sign of where Brubaker's heart is. It will be odd to read CA without Brubaker since I never have before.

- DAREDEVIL will be awesome with Chris Samnee art and Mark Waid continues the theme of new Marvel villains named after less than scary animals. SCARLET SPIDER has Salamander and this will have the Coyote. Cool cover, and this is really becoming a seminal run on the franchise for Waid same as his run on FF was for that one.

- I do wonder if DEFENDERS will be announced as cancelled or retroactively considered a maxi series by September 2012; seriously, sales keep slipping. At any rate, this is an interesting place for Scott Lang.

- I'm partisan on trying HAWKEYE; love me some David Aja art, but lord is Fraction hit-or-miss. The premise which seems to confuse Hawkeye with Robin Hood concerns me; if you want the archer who bleats about liberalism, he's in green and with another company.

- FANTASTIC FOUR and FF cross over, which is annoying since I haven't gotten FF. I also love how since Johnny returned and after he blew up some Kree, Spider-Man has just disappeared. No on panel leaving, no big speech, he just stops appearing. "Thanks for replacing our team moron, Spidey. Here's your complementary Unstable Molecular Basket Of Cheese. Don't let the Fantasticar hit you on the way out."

- God, SPACE PUNISHER is so dumb. What's next; SCUBA-PUNISHER? FRANK CASTLE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY? THE PUNISHER MEETS ARCHIE 2: THIS TIME IT'S PERSONAL!?

- For what seems to be no reason, the five issue BIG HERO 6 mini series by Chris Claremont from roughly 2009 is being reprinted in a $9 non-trade. At best that could be because BH6 appeared in ENDS OF THE EARTH over in ASM, but that's rather flimsy. It sold horribly and was neither bad or memorable.

- Honest question; with "AVENGERS: EARTH'S MIGHTIEST HEROES" canceled, how long will a kiddie comic based around it be published? And was it a good idea to issue it when Marvel brass HAD to know the axe was falling on it?

- X-MEN LEGACY sounds bizarre. I like Gage but it's not been his greatest work.

- Mark Millar's NEMESIS gets a sequel? Weird. At the very least, solicits for his comics have gotten less obnoxious as time has gone by. Maybe someone retired.

A follow-up to the greatest comic ever written? I'd buy it. I'd buy the **** out of it. :o

Anyways, the Untold Tales of PunisherMAX issue looks and sounds interesting, if only because I, like many, loved The Slavers arc that Ennis wrote.

Speaking of Ennis, how long is FuryMAX supposed to be? I thought it was a mini series, but from the looks of it, it's going for a while. 9 issues? 12? I don't know. Not complaining though. This story has been great so far. I really hope Marvel re-releases Ennis' previous two Fury books though, especially the first MAX series.

I notice how there isn't a solicitation for Hulk in September. I hope that they'll put it out in October. I've come to really like that book.

I've got this weird feeling that with Aaron leaving Hulk, Ennis may take over.

I think hippie means Jeff Parker's Hulk. The one with Rulk. In which case, I agree. Parker's had a steady line of very engaging arcs building Ross into a pretty cool character. There's something kind of charming about a crotchety old a**hole who thought all robots were soulless automatons a year ago coming to consider Machine Man a friend and falling in love with an LMD. :)

Yeah probably but Aaron is in fact leaving Incredible Hulk. HH posted it in the AvX thread today.

According to his Twitter, Jeff Parker forgot to write up a solit, whether you wanna believe that though ....

Also Ennis writing the Hulk would be madness.

I didn't know the writers did their own solicits. I figured that was the job of the assistant editor. Honestly, it seems like they're all written by the same guy half the time.

But the fact that they're written by the writers does kind of explain those obnoxious solicits that Mark Millar comics used to get. ;)

Fury apparently will run 13 issues - The Punisher and Barracuda have their own mini arcs in it as fury meets them both in their respective killing fields: vietnam and bay of pigs :)

13? Awesome. I knew The Punisher and Barricuda were going to appear but I figured it was sooner than later. Thanks.

I talked to Nick Bradshaw last night and he told me that even Aaron fely that his run on TIH had not been up to his regular standards... Probably why he's leaving the book...

While I haven't read Hulk, I'm happy Aaron isn't like other creators and recognizes his flaws. That is a great quality for a writer to have.

Yeah, I tend to respect creators who admit that their work is not up to par.

Yeah, it's weird Aaron has struggled as much as he has. There's actually some pretty good concepts weaved into his IH run, but somehow the execution has just been horrid.

It's make more sense to be if it were the other way around.

Eh, goes with the territory, I guess. Not a lot of writers can do good work on a character as s***ty as the Hulk. :oldrazz:

That's part of the reason I only like Hulk in supporting roles. Pak was the only one to pull me in in my 21 years of reading comics.

Peter David's run didn't grab you?

He was way better than Pak, IMO.

I've never tried it to be honest.

And that Wedding of Cyclops and Jean Grey trade looks fantastic. That small group of comics might be my favorite small X-Men run ever. Everything dealing with the engagement and wedding, Sabretooth at the mansion, etc. All it needs to be perfect is the aftermath of the wedding, the Adventures of Cyclops and Phoenix.

I don't do the trade thing. Has Marvel been doing X-Men trades chronologically with Uncanny and X-Men up to that point or is that a stand alone trade?

SCREEEEEECHCCHCCH!!!

Astonishing X-Men #54... $2.99?! They dropped the price?! AMAZING!!!!
