Still thinking she's MJ with 'em going the best friend to lover route, but I guess we'll see!

If Zendaya is MJ why would they hide it and not just tell us?

They would get backlash regardless whether they announce it now or later, she's not MJ

Now that I'm home and no longer on my tablet, the idea that Mary Jane Watson could be of a different ethnicity is really cool to me. As others have pointed out over time, there's nothing about the character that makes her predominantly Caucasian in any way, as same can be said for pretty much any character within the Spider-Man world so I'd have no issues at all with it. If an actor/actress is good for the role, they should be given the role.

I get the sense that you like her for the role not because of her acting skills or resemblance to the character of MJ (because you said you don't know jack about her), but solely because she's not white and it's "modern" (as if being white is "not modern").

I find that to be reducing her to be simply a skin color, even though that's not your intention. I'm trying to look up videos of her, and I can picture her as MJ as well and I'd support it because she seems very likeable. Not because of her skin color not being white.

I mean, it's one thing to push for minorities to get more spot light than they've had in the past. I'm all for that. But I'd sense that kind of support more if people said "Yes finally, she's a great actress that deserves to finally get this kind of role that she hasn't gotten before due to her skin color!", instead of "I love this choice because she's not white. It's fresh!".

I agree with your last sentence.

So if Zendaya does turn out to be MJ and this whole 'Michelle' thing turns out to be a smokescreen, I'm fine with it. It's not like that erases any past version of MJ (be it films, comics, cartoons, etc. as they all still exist and can be and will be enjoyed again and again), so I don't get why many are upset over this possibility.

I agree with your opinion about Zendaya, she might as well be a great MJ for all we know and I'd love that (of course). BUT...I certainly don't agree with your stance about the source material. They should definitely be faithful to the source material (that's not to say they shouldn't come up with new stories) when it comes to their characters. Otherwise, what's the point of making this specific film instead of creating something new from scratch? I'm not saying they can't update things, but "it doesn't erase any past versions of this character" is not an acceptable excuse to use "in name only" versions of characters. Marvel Studios has handled this well so far, I don't expect less of them in the future.

Yes, comics and such are a visual-medium and naturally some want to see characters brought to life the way they were written and drawn from decades ago and that's completely cool, but I just wish some would be a bit more open-minded is all. :oldrazz:

There, said my piece. Carry on, folks!

I sense some heavy bias here! :cwink:

The more I think it sounds like either Gwen or MJ, because they don't have to start off as love interests. They can start as friends. Zendeya is gorgeous, and Marvel has been known to bring out the best in actors, no matter how small. So I wouldn't be suprised if she really was MJ.

Still thinking she's MJ with 'em going the best friend to lover route, but I guess we'll see!

That's what I'm thinking...

But equally I can see them taking someone like Liz, or even Michele Gonzales, and making them a significant figure in Peter's life

If you announce everyone at once you'll suppress some backlash because there'll be so many actors / actresses to talk about.

i was trying to post this on last thread before the thread was closed. Harry and ernesth look at all he articles they all use buzz words like key role and lead role. We could end up seeing her either be a big character in the film be it as a new character or if they where to race bent mj/gwen and what not. But i feel the news sites are jsut using those terms to drive more hits to there articles and what not.

Plus i said this the last thread too we should pull up first articles of dunst/stone/woodly casting and see how they announced them as mj/gwen vs this zendaya casting.

Other thing to look at they could easily say she may have a big role but to the film is release she could either end up a big role or end up a small role. For me i dont have any major hate for zendaya i seen a few things she done. But i really couldnt see marvel changing mj or gwen. Its more likely she be sally/liz type then gwen/mj. More so even though the comics and films/tv are apart with all the push with mj over in the ironman books and the big push and popularity with gwen(with spider gwen book). It would just be counter productive to the marketing and branding of those characters for getting new readers on them to have them change either of them in the film.

It would hold it off
.

It would still looks weird.
Marvel should assume their choice and be proud about it, they shouldn't try to hide it just because of they are afraid of the backlash.

Michelle was a room mate in Peter's adult years, right? I don't see that happening here.

I think Zendaya will play a new character created for the films, perhaps a replacement of Mary Jane?

Maybe her character dies but then returns as a ghost Denis Leary-style in the sequels?

Why didn't they announce Martin Freeman as Everrot Ross right away? Or Daniel Bruhl as Zemo?

Regardless of who she turns out to be now we have three cast members. Zendeya, Holland, and Tomei.

After Marisa Tomei's casting, who could not be further from the comic book image of Aunt May, Zendaya could literally be playing anyone.

It's not so much "afraid" of backlash, it's more of a "we'll deal with it when it's absolutely necessary." There's already been hate towards Michael B Jordan when he was cast as Human Torch, now Leslie Jones is getting it in the new Ghostbusters movie, and that's not even counting the social tension going on in the U.S.A.
