Marvel Films Marvel Studios’ SDCC 2024 Hall H Panel - Predictions & Discussion Thread

1. Yes, Colin Farrell is behind a lot of makeup but it's not like he also plays Batman in the same universe.
2. Dormammu appears for a total of few minutes and is just a voice role.
But that's my point. You're saying "There's no point in casting RDJ if he's just playing the actual Victor von Doom" and "you're not getting RDJ for that role if he's completely unrecognizable.". I'm saying they may have gotten RDJ because he can be completely unrecognizable. If you put RDJ in as much make-up as Farrell when he has the mask off and otherwise have his face hidden Mandalorian style, then it not functionally different from "being just a voice role" at all. Then it's just the same as when Linda Cardellini and David Dastmalchian played new CGI characters. If they believe that RDJ can act and sound differently enough from Tony to sell that role, then they could get a good performance for Doom without it being distracting that it's RDJ, while still getting all the fans and media talking with the shocking announcement of RDJ returning in a different role.

I'm not saying it's not a possibility that it'll be relevant in-universe that he's played by RDJ. That's definitely a route they may be going. But I think it's naive to say that he must be a Tony Stark variant just because he's played by the same actor.

4. Netflix shows weren't really canon to the MCU at the time so reusing those actors is not the same as reusing RDJ.
The casting decision wasn't the same, no. But the end result is. In both cases we have the same actor portraying two different major characters in the MCU. From the casting perspective if audiences are able to deal with Mahershala Ali and Ebon Moss-Bachrach being multiple important characters in the MCU, then they can deal with RDJ, especially if he both looks and acts completely differently. (And also, when Ebon was announced as Ben Grimm the Netflix shows were already formally placed into the canon, though it's hard to say when those decisions were made internally).

To be honest, I’m more concerned with the Russos being back than RDJ. Their horrible post-MCU track record leads me to believe they were more riding high off the groundwork set by others than their talent for why the Avengers films turned out as good as they did. And now they don’t really have the groundwork to rest on.

They better be working with a stellar script.
We'll see.

I don't think they could top The Winter Soldier, Civil War, Infinity War and Endgame. The bar is pretty high.

I'm cool with RDJ as Doom. He's a brilliant actor.
He's much like DDL in that he literally BECOMES the character he's playing.
I doubt we will even recognize him for the majority of the film.

I am sure your casual audience is going to eat it up. This is why they made the move. But I care about my experience when watching something, and this move single handedly ended my hype for these Avengers movies.

Ngl, I completely forgot Ebon Moss-Bachrach was in Punisher until a week after he was casted for FF. And he had a much bigger role in that show than Ali did in Luke Cage.
They already established FF takes place in a alternate time line anyway so Ebon playing two different characters seems to be a easy explanation.

Regardless, it's not something that needs an explanation anyway. Reusing actors is not an hard concept to understand.

Not sure of mentioned before but RDJ did mention something along the lines of new mask, same task. Could the task still be having a "suit of armor around the world?" only this time it's a suit of Doombots to protect his world from Incursion type of events and/or those that are unwilling to make the tough calls?

With this being a Multiverse Saga perhaps it's a Tony deviated from the Avengers and/or disagreed with the Accords and didn't want to answer to anyone and took a different mantle? Or a Tony taken from an early age and was born in Latveria ala Loki.

Been thinking about this as surely Holland will have some kind of reaction once he sees the face behind the mask in the upcoming Avengers movies.

Still think it's an act of desperation but it's the only logical way I see fans shoestring Doom and having being a chatacter fans can relate without doing actual work in building him up.

Expectations for SDCC - 2025. Kevin ankunces Secret Wars is too big for one movie so instead it's splits into two and introduces

Out comes RDJ as Victor Von Doom followed by

Jeremy Renner as The Hood
Chris Hemsworth as Loki
Scarlet Johanssen as Emma Frost
Mark Ruffalo as Magneto
Chris Evans as Red Skull
Tom Holland as Norman Osborn
Tenoch Huerta as Namor (looking confused)

Avengers: The Cabal

Not sure how I feel about the RDJ reveal. It was really a WTF? moment for me.

He's a really good actor, and I don't usually see Tony Stark when he's in other things. However, he's also basically been the face of the MCU since 2008. Variant Tony Stark sure bring him back, but Victor Von Doom I'd rather give a proper origin to with a different actor. Doom can't be just a variant of Tony Stark, to much of the MCU already traces back to Stark Industries. Pretty soon we'll have to start calling this the SCU.
