Marvel's "Fear" Event - Part 1

Well, Fraction mentioned in an interview that he did plan out the major beats of the Thor/Hulk/Thing fight in his script. I'm not saying every writer does it, but clearly some do get into the specifics of the fights rather than just letting the artists go wild.

Whedon had finally shaped Cyclops into the badass leader he was destined to be...and then after Messiah Complex all the writers took it a step too far. They kept making him darker and more ruthless and it all got out of hand.
I think a lot of writers just don't see Cyclops as a sympathetic character. Hell, I think most writers still see him as "the guy who's not Wolverine."

It boggles my mind that anyone could think of Wolverine as a sympathetic character...

Writers shouldn't be allowed to do anything significant with characters they don't like. Call it 'Giffen hates Karate Kid' syndrome.

When and where did Juggernaut enter this story? The Uncanny X-men issues came about rather abrupt and I havent been following this story elsewhere so I dont know what the heck is going on outside of that

Remember when Cyclops was the great guy who you wanted to succeed? Another in a long line of train wrecks at Marvel I think

I started to have faith after Second Coming where it appeared that Cyclops learned the error of his ways and showed some regret on how he treated his close friends like cannon fodder. But then they just had Cyclops regress back to his old ways.

He got the hammer that crashed in the middle of the Raft in Thunderbolts. The team chased him down and tried to stop him before he smacked them around and headed to San Fran.

do you know what issue this occured in?

He also tore through Las Vegas and the new Initiative team there in Fear Itself: Youth in Revolt.

I didn't read those but out of all the Worthy - Juggernaut was the busiest and most formidable. The Serpent is gonna regret not scooping him up from the raft right away and letting him run amok.

In a perfect world writers would simply write better even with characters they don't like. Of course, in a perfect world Shia Labeouf would not have a career.

Newsarama has an unlettered preview of 6. Is it just me or is Odin preparing Thor to go and fight the serpent even though he is wounded and exhausted?

The Fearless mini-series will focus on Valkyrie and Sin and what happens to the hammers.

Man, I hope Cap's got some choice words for Odin about abandoning his kid.

Also, what the f*** is up with Fraction and giving Thor armor? The guy can fly through the heart of a sun unscathed. Quit fitting him with specialized armor like he's the subject of your latest toy line. I don't need to see Fear Itself Armor Thor with Serpent-Slaying Asgardian Grip. :o

Maybe Fraction wanted "cool armor" on "weak Odin" to fight the "serpent" you know? Just like in Walter Simonson's run!

Here's what the armor looks like, #7 cover:

Ah well i just wanna hope i can enjoy Fearless, Valkyrie! <3

There was an actual reason for Thor to wear armor in Simonson's run.

Rogue has starred in Legacy for years now. I'm annoyed that's ending with this awful schism event and she'll be second to Wolverine afterwards.

How can we consider Odin anything but Thor's biggest bad guy?

Because his intentions are usually good. He's just a phenomenally terrible father.

Matt Fraction compares his story with Frank Miller's Daredevil

This led to a member of the audience inquiring about the decision to off the sidekick, which Fraction explained wasn't something he came up with on his own, explaining that Ed Brubaker was going to kill Bucky at the end of "Gulag," the storyline running in "Captain America" during "Fear Itself."
"When 'Fear Itself' started, we did a retreat where I was kind of pitching it all," Fraction said. "The thing about Blitzkrieg USA is, we've never seen Cap fight a modern war on US soil and I wanted it to be in DC so it was it American institutional icons and things like that. This is where we get the taste of how big this is. And Ed, in his very Ed way, turned and said, 'Yeah, this is where the Red Skull kills Bucky.'"
To his surprise, Fraction immediately loved the idea. "You do that, and it is the all-time greatest Captain America story. Put it up in the rafters. No one is going to ever touch it. You are Frank Miller on 'Daredevil' if you have the Red Skull kill Bucky when you're done with Bucky." Brubaker protested, citing the character's popularity, but Fraction's enthusiasm eventually won out. "'When it's time, that's how you got to go. That's how it's got to end.' I don't think Ed realized he'd said it out loud, or if he did he immediately regretted it because I sort of dove on it and said, 'Yes! I'm doing it! It's done! No take-backs!'"
"There's an issue of Bucky on a plane frantically racing to DC somewhere that will just remain unpublished. But, yeah -- originally 'Gulag' was going to be the end of the Winter Soldier, cuing up Ed's work on 'Captain America' #1. Luckily, 'Fear Itself' was happening at the same time and it was one of those moments where it all worked. Ed saw a moment to contribute to the greater good of the Marvel Universe. He is one of my dearest friends, one of my oldest friends in comics and certainly is a big part of the reason I'm at Marvel. It was an amazing solid that a friend did for another friend. Ed just saw that it would make 'Fear Itself' stronger. In conclusion: it's all Ed's fault."

thats how it should be. One of the biggest complains about Legacy was that it was a cleverly disguised Rogue solo. I hate to see Carey go but losing the focus on Rogue will be a good thing for the title

Eh. I dunno. Being a big Rogue fan myself, Legacy became my only X-title for a while. I wonder if they will lose some numbers from fans like myself.

It'll probably offset by the new readers they get from the characters added to the book, ones which presumably wont be there to revolve around Rogue
