Mattchew's Fanart Thread...

Wow I love it. Especially Spidey's pose, it looks cool.

Thanks. I tried REALLY hard to get his pose to look like a Spidey pose (which I found to be not so easy), so I'm glad it comes across on some level.

OhOhOh! Poison Ivy! Or a kick ass Harley Quinn!

both? ;)

-------------------

Also, just wanted to post my final for the Spidey fanart contest. As I've said in the contest thread, I am WEAK at anything with depth and have never really done cast shadows, so while this is not a strong example of either (particularly depth) I am taking baby steps... (baby steps to the elevator!)

Anyway, here it is...

If you have a second, I'd love to hear your thoughts! Thanks.

since I've been messing around on the computer doing cartoon stuff for the past year 2 years or so, I haven't been drawing in a sketch book much anymore, but that used to be what I did a lot...

I thought I'd post some stuff I did a few years back...

Here's weird faces I drew... Not anything great, but I decided to post em because this was my first attempt at trying to be a little more refined while doodling, and the end result of that is the stuff I've been posting in this thread for the past 2 years.

More to come...

More of my old stuff from my sketch book...

The above post with the four faces was in a more cartoon stlye (that I do my posts here in), but I used to go for more realism when I was drawing and trying to put effort into it.

Here's the first of a few pics I did with pencils. It's based on a picture of Jennifer Connelly that was in EW @ some point...

woman_1.jpg

I had to scan it four times and photoshop it together, so that explains some of the weird 'wavy' coloring on the left side... couldn't ever get it to look better on the comp.

Here's another pic out of my sketch book from a few years back...

It's based on a picture of Estella Warren (the girl from the 'Apes' remake) that was in EW years and years ago.

woman_2.jpg

Again, this is photoshopped together from four scans, so there's some weird wavy lighting thing going on.

One last pic from my sketch book...

This one is based on an American Eagle ad.

This one was photoshopped together like the others, but for some reason it came out much better.

those weird faces look cool, matt....i could also easily recognize Connely and Estella. good work!

Great drawings. I love the first one on pencil. Really beautiful, and as always, great use of shading

Nice to see your pencil stuff. You use pencil for the rough drawings of your stuff right?

I like it, even though the dude just looked like he smelled somebody fart...

The thing I find ironic about this piece, is that they've all got textures, except for the lizard, who theoretically would be the only one you'd naturally assume would have a textured pattern, due to scales.

Great piece though. You've got a great way of reinterpreting character designs in your own style, that manages to give them a fresh look, but keep the essence of what they are.

My only issue with the piece, (aside from the weird shadowing considering the light sources) would be the texturing. It really does come off as a flat texture just laid over the shading. Which tends to flatten the image, imo.

As always though, Good work.

I really like this pic, but if you really want her face to pop, you should use something like a 2B pencil in her eyes. Make her eyes the central point of the picture and then make all the remaining darks in the picture gradually lighter as you move away from her eyes. It's great as it is, but amping up the darks can really bring it to another level.

well... that pic was laid to rest years ago... i will however give that idea a try on the next pic I'm doing, for sure!

great stuff matt, love the estella warren pic

yeah... the texture thing is as follows...

lizard: there was texture, but when I shrunk the image down to about a 1/5 of the orginal size to post, it all got 'smoothed' away by photoshop... then i forgot to add it back

spidey texture: 'It really does come off as a flat texture just laid over the shading'.... becasue that's exactly what it is.... I actually spent a bit of time angling it and adding a bit of variation to the big version but when i shrunk it down, that was all wiped out, so I just really quickly threw in a small version of the texture.... the printed version looks better, imo, when it comes to the texture issues... but the shadowing is still all messed up. :)

those faces are basically more invovled versions of the type of thing you'd find on every page of notes I've ever taken in a class. :)

Nice work Mattchew! I love your style.

Thanks!

Thanks... Like I said, they're from years ago, so I'd like to think I've learned a thing or two since then, but in a different style and media... So, I'm guessing I've forgotten a thing or two as well.

Nice to see your pencil stuff. You use pencil for the rough drawings of your stuff right?

Yeah, but that's a bit more like doodling to get ideas... I consider the heavy lifting to be the stuff once I'm working on the computer. Iguess what I was trying to say is that its been a long time since I put a effort into doing more 'realistic' stuff.

great stuff matt, love the estella warren pic

Thanks!

I see. I like your art. Its always a good idea to keep up with your drawing.
Great stuff, can't wait to see more.

Pretty good Matt.
Couple things to keep in mind about shadow. Using your eye or ruler (depending on pad of papaer or computor) Use the light source like a vanishing point in perspective it helps place the edges of the shadow.

Also remember that the futher away from the object casting the shadow, the more defused the shadow will be at the edges and lighter the shadow becomes.

Drum roll, please!...
