Max: The Artist Formerly Known as HBO Max

Looks like AT&T are trying to dump WB and run fast out of Hollywood. A total disaster.

How are they dumping WB? That sounds like AT&T is cutting and running out of the game. That would mean WB is up for grabs. I've seen others say this but I don't understand how this is the case. It just sounds like AT&T (who still owns Warner) is merging with Discovery to boost the both of them.

As for the name, please call it something other than HBOMax. It really dilutes and cheapens HBO.

Warner Media will no longer be under AT&T. It’s spinning off into a new company with Discovery. AT&T will still exist as a separate company from the newly formed Warner/Discovery company.

This is what I get from CNBC:

"Under the agreement, AT&T will unwind its $85 billion acquisition of Time Warner, which closed just under three years ago and form a new media company with Discovery. The deal would create a new business, separate from AT&T, that could be valued at as much as $150 billion, including debt, according to The Financial Times."

So by separate, they mean they don't own WarnerMedia anymore and once the merge with Discovery happens, they're taking the money and running out of the game completely?

I know AT&T will own a stake in this merger, but doesn't that mean they will still partly be involved?

AT&T as a separate company won’t have a stake in the newly formed company...however, it’s shareholders will own 71% of it. AT&T as a company and its shareholders are two separate entities (legally).

Basically, if I own a share of AT&T, I now also own 71% of one share of the new company. But AT&T doesn’t own anything of that new company.

I’ve been rewatching Everwood on HBO Max. When the show first aired, I was in high school and empathizing with Ephram throughout the series. Now that it’s been almost 20 years later, I find myself empathizing with the dad way more, especially with him trying to reconnect with his son during the first season. Time really puts things in perspective.

Finally got around to watching X-Men Dark Phoenix since it's leaving at the end of the month, I'm guessing to Disney+ which I don't get. Eh didn't think it was as terrible as I've heard it was. Definitely could've been way better, especially as an ending for the series with FOX, but overall I didn't hate it.

Lots of things I'm going to miss about FOX's X-Men movies that an MCU version probably won't have - the serious & dramatically-weighted tone/atmosphere that they always captured (the MCU movies are always too damn quippy and light-hearted for my tastes, and not serious enough), and especially the core cast members - McKellen & Fassbender as Magneto, Stewart & McAvoy as Xavier, Jackman as Wolverine. Some of the other actors are more replaceable, but I can't see those characters being easily replaced by new actors. Huge shoes to fill for sure.

Winter Soldier and Black Panther wrestled with some political themes while remaining entertaining.

I think MCU's X-men will be similar.

Anyone watch the Friends reunion yet? How’s it rank compared to the Fresh Prince reunion.

edit: so I watched it. It was fine. As a fan of the series, I think it served its purpose. It was was hard watching some of the overly botoxed faces. Matthew Perry seemed off but I read he had to have emergency dental surgery that day so that was probably it. Lisa Kudrow looked great. Matt LeBlanc seemed like a fun guy to hang out with.

The James Corden part was pointless. I forwarded through the treacly testimonial stuff because that’s not what I signed up for. The best parts are them just sitting around reminiscing and telling stories to each other.

Forget the Harry Potter franchise, we've got ALL THE PINK PANTHER MOVIES!

The number of movie series/franchises that WB has claim to (and has available on HBO Max) is downright insane. It's a major plus that I haven't seen a lot of the older ones. :)

I've only seen a couple of the Harry Potter movies in bits and pieces and need to stake out a few days to get through all of them.
