Deadpool and Wolverine have had a much better track record cinematically than either Superman and the Fantastic Four have had for the past twenty/thirty years.

Deadpool & Wolverine had the advantage of being one of the first post strike movies to get out there. It had damn near a month to itself, along with a preceding dry spell of good movies. Yeah, Twisters and Romulus were big movies, but one didn't hit internationally, and the other I think has a ceiling.

I’m sorry, but I just don’t feel this film is failing: it’s fending off not one but TWO new movies—both of which have stellar critics and audience reviews and are direct counter programming. And, like Superman, The Fantastic Four will retain its crown at the box office 2 weeks in a row. If it were truly “bombing”, it would be ceding ground and sliding to No. 2 or even lower with all the activity in the box office’s top 5.

I went with several friends this afternoon to see it in IMAX. The theatre was 90% full—the first couple of rows directly beneath the screen had some open seats. Granted, it was a matinee situation, but it’s still IMAX (higher price point) and the place was packed.

Deadpool & Wolverine was also a nostalgia play event movie. Not a standard, garden variety MCU film

I do wish it was having a stronger performance at the BO. I know many are saying they felt it lacked action and the beginning was slow. So perhaps they probably should’ve went for the usual big action scene opener, then the show introducing them, followed by the pregnancy test. I personally loved the film starting out with the pregnancy test heralding the arrival of Franklin.

Deadpool and Wolverine was a the coming together of two of the most beloved superhero series of the century. It was a big event film and Marvel with always make money on big event nostalgia. The issue is that's all audiences seem to be into now.

The movie's performance is what it is. At the time, Captain America: The First Avenger wasn't considered a great performance either, but Cap became the like 2nd most popular character in the entire MCU eventually. The metrics indicate that FF is doing well with audiences and such, so if the FF have a strong showing in Doomsday, maybe FF2 sees a TWS bump and then we are off to the races. We just have to watch this all play out. I am still very confident we are at least getting FF2.

I do think it's fair to point out that Cap never had a sequel that didn't involve an Avenger. They basically gave him an Avengers flick for his third, and it didn't touch Black Panther's only solo with T'Challa.

TWS had Widow, sure. But so did Iron Man 2. CW I see less an indictment on Cap and more they wanted to compete with BvS.

I wouldn't say there is any indictment on Cap. Just not quite sure how popular Evans Steve was. Also Iron Man 2 introduced Widow. So I'd argue that was a rub for the character more then trying to boost IM2.

True to an extent, but I think there is also the factor that Widow cause of Perlmutter was not getting a movie, but they wanted to keep Widow visible. And given TWS was a SHIELD based film, using her, Fury, etc all made sense. I don't think Widow or Fury being on TWS alone doubles it's BO take movie 1 to movie 2. That's largely cause they cracked how to make Cap popular and the Avengers bump.

Plus, like I said a few pages back even if I don't love this idea, Marvel always has the RDJ button if they do in fact retain him as Doom beyond Secret Wars.

Just to ensure it makes more money, I could definitely see the FF’s sequel including Holland’s Spidey and/or RDJ’s Doom. I feel like some more starpower is definitely needed.

I think FF being in Spidey 5 is def happening. Johnny will be the costar, and we will see the Amazing Bag Man costume.

Oh there presence didn't double it. No doubt. Most of it was the Avengers bump. But I do think it's telling that a few months later GotG, a bunch of nobodies, cleaned Cap's clock at the box office.

I think they mainly wanted to fit the Civil War storyline into phase 3 before Infinity War/Endgame, because they knew they were going to lose Downy and likely knew they were going to lose Evans, and thus were going to lose their chance. I think they were wanting to do Civil War as far back as phase one. Cap 3 was just the best time for it. And apparently the early version of Cap 3 they were toying with was very underwhelming.

Don't we know they did Civil War in direct response to BvS?

This is where I feel the film did come up short in the editing department. For example, the flash-back scenes of the FF fighting Red Ghost, Mole Man, Giganto, etc. could have been drawn out a LOT more than they were. They had an opportunity to recreate the FF’s first front comic cover and gave it literally 2 seconds of time on screen. If you blinked you missed it—and there was such a great chance there to show the Four using their powers for a bigger action sequence. Arguably the Little Ceasers Pizza commercial gave us more of that battle.:woozy:

They ain't blowing $50 million for RDJ on a sequel to a $500 million film.

Paying RDJ that amount of money was stupid. Since when was he a box office star? He was part of marvel in its prime , when it was exciting waiting for the next movie. To be massive at the box office you need the general public to come . Not just the fans . Which I think is what is happening at the moment. And just the fans of marvel cannnot support a 200 million budget movie . And what it needs to make a profit

$269,186,446, already outgrossed The Incredible Hulk worldwide.

$170,127,635, already outgrossed Eternals domestically.

Interesting take from the Hollywood Reporter this morning:

*************
“The Fantastic Four reboot is having no trouble ruling over the competition in its second outing after reversing the curse that has plagued Marvel Studios for several years in opening to $117 million domestically and north of $200 million globally. However, despite stellar reviews and audience exit scores, the superhero pic is looking at a drop of 65 percent or more (that could change, of course, if traffic picks up on Saturday). While that’s within the norm for a superhero pic, it’s garnering attention from fanboy pundits after DC’s Superman fell less than 54 percent in its sophomore outing.

Superman, however, didn’t face the same competition when it launched. But there’s no denying the pic is holding in. It’s expected to come in fourth this weekend after clearing the $300 million mark last week at the domestic box office in a major milestone for DC Studios, which has struggled far more than Marvel. (Box office experts believe Fantastic Four, which opened two weeks after Superman, will ultimately catch up, or at least come close, but it remains to be seen.)“

This is what I’ve been saying. Perhaps this is just a moment in time. We still have the rest of August for the film to rebound.

This is a bad take. Variety is being vicious, but they are far closer to reality. There was no comp for F4 this weekend. The Bad Guys is the big opener with 22m. Superman and JW did 25m combined. Superman and JW are a month old. Superman dropped far less with a 10 day old JW.

40m reported second weekend. Such a round number probably means studio fudging. Worse yet, Superman and F4 are now even OS after the second weekend. Mid 500m looking like the landing spot.
