You are correct. Some MI is clearly hereditary. When you see a case file of someone who's schizophrenic symptoms began when they were in preschool, it's a no brainer. However, it's also clear that some MI is a result of traumatic events and/or self medication. Sometimes people have perfectly normal lives for decades then one truly traumatic incident causes a psychotic break.
