Horror Mike Flanagan's The Exorcist | Blumhouse

Horror maestro Mike Flanagan will write, direct and produce what Blumhouse is describing as a “radical new take” on the franchise, one that will be set in the Exorcist universe but will not be a sequel to Believer.

Flanagan’s Exorcist hiring is a notable change in direction that comes nearly three years after Universal announced a $400 million megadeal that would allow it to make a trilogy of Exorcist films to be helmed by David Gordon Green, the filmmaker behind Universal and Blumhouse’s hit Halloween movies. Those plans were put on the shelf after Green’s Believer earned negative reviews and brought in $137 million at the box office.

Like Dr Sleep, it'll probably turn out okay but kind of forgettable when measured up against the original. At least with The Dark Tower there'd be no doubt that the property would only be moving upwards.

Look forward to seeing which of his regulars he uses for this.

I’ve loved everything of his that I’ve watched, so sign me the f**k up.

If there’s anything I’ve learned from watching his Ouija prequel and Midnight Mass, it’s that he’s really good at making a solid film entry in a franchise that had a previously bad entry, he’s really good at existentialism in horror, he’s really good at exploring the various sides of faith in regards to belief and non-belief without turning anybody into caricatures, he makes me care about every single one of his characters, and he can make me cry.

He’s going to excel. This franchise is prime real estate for the kinds of things that interest him and that he likes to tackle. He’s got this in the bag.

The Exorcist is 1 for 5 as far as sequels go, but Flanagan has a good record going for him. His vibe is a little different than what I’d expect from The Exorcist (think about what a soft touch he was on Hill House vs. “LET JESUS **** YOU!”), but different might be good, rather than basically doing a greatest hits album.

Flanagan's Ouija: Origin of Evil is a million times better than the prior film. His The Haunting of Hill House mini-series is very good, and his follow-up The Haunting of Bly Manor is excellent. I'm definitely more interested in another Exorcist movie than I thought I'd be.

Would you say Bly Manor over Hill House then? I haven't seen the former. Mass and Hill are probably my favorites.

For me, yes. I gave Hill House 8/10 overall, and Bly Manor 9/10. I found the story much more of an emotional one, with a lot more connection with Henry James' original story than Hill House has with Shirley Jackson's book (other than character and place names Hill House was pretty much a completely new story), and Bly Manor contains what might just be the best two episodes of any series I've seen.

Loved Hill House, I thought Bly Manor was fine though I didn't care as much for it, but I thought Midnight Mass was a return to form. Midnight Mass is also severely underrated because it was released around the same time as Squid Game which totally overshadowed it.

I didn't care for the last Exorcist film at all, but Flanagan being brought on board is definitely exciting news especially considering the quality of his previous work and is just a perfect fit for this franchise.

It's going to be fun seeing so many of his regulars pop up in this too.

I've only ever see people say Hill is better so this is cool to see favor the other way. I've been struggling to start long series lately so I wanna hop on some miniseries first.

By 1 for 5 I’m assuming the 1 is The Exorcist III yes? And I know it’s not a film but I am personally also going to include season 1 of The Exorcist tv series.

III is definitely the only follow-up film I consider worthwhile, but I did love the show.

Yeah III is a great sequel. I never got around to season 2, I think it was only two season right?
