AWE HELL YEAH!!! Ok Cruise what crazy death defining stunt are you going to pull off this time because sweet mother of epicness you freaking raised the bar in both Ghost Protocol and Rogue Nation. Just call Ethan Hunt : Daredevil lol

He'll definitely star. He's made it clear he's not giving this franchise up. They've been talking about Brad Pitt, Josh Holloway, and Jeremy Renner taking over for years (Pitt starting in 2005).

The comeback that Cruise has made after his debacle in 2005 is on the level of RDJ.

I love Tom Cruise's films and think he is on one of the great action film streaks of all time imo. But no, it is not even close to RDJ. No one makes the bank RDJ does, no one is getting love from audiences, media and critics alike. He is JLaw without the fake falling thing.

Re: the RDJ/Cruise thing.

I'll watch RDJ as Stark till the cows come home but I wasn't exactly rushing to go and see Due Date or The Judge. I'll similarly watch Cruise as Ethan Hunt with the same enthusiasm I have for RDJ's Stark but I find that I'm more eager to watch his other films than I am of RDJ's - I enjoyed Jack Reacher, Oblivion and Edge of Tomorrow immensely. I make no bones about it, I've always loved Cruise. He may be cooky as hell off screen but on it I've always felt I've got bang for my buck [or perhaps more accurately, my £].

Put it another way, if it wasn't for Stark/Iron Man/the Avengers I don't think many RDJ would be as popular as he is, but if Cruise didn't have Mission Impossible I feel he'd still be in projects that people want to go and see.

Agreed.
its not just his talent .
Its his youth and enthusiasm.
Cruise is game for anything .
And yes, I know that he is in his fifties .
But, it doesn't feel that way.

Any MARVEL fan loves RDJ. Thats a pretty good fact. But RDJs NON MARVEL movies have kind of sucked since RDJ became Tony Stark. While Cruise as stated above even if he did not have Mission Impossible. He still picks great projects outside of Mission Impossible

Cruise will hang on a plane as it's taking off (without a parachute of course) from the Dubai airport and then once it's high enough, he'll strap a bomb to it. He'll then leap from the plane, and the force of the explosion will propel him forward towards the Burj Khalifa. He'll throw a grappling hook around its spire and repel about halfway down the building until he runs out of rope. From there, he'll strap another bomb to the side of the building, cut the rope and jump, and the force of the explosion will propel him forward enough that he'll land safely in the Burj Khalifa Lake.

Do the jump out of plane / any vehicle in air idea. But only Tom Cruise can pull off RUNNING IN MID AIR on his way down defying gravity. That should be his next stunt

I sure hope they listen to the fan reaction and bring back Rebecca. She's amazing.

Cruise will strap himself to a rocket, then get shot off into space. He'll then detach himself, leap off of the rocket as it explodes. He'll then free-fall through Earth's atmosphere, then parachute to the ground. Once he lands (completely unharmed and will perfect hair), he'll sprint away from a giant tornado while bad guys ineffectually try to shoot him.

I guess going into a NASA space station could challenge those death defining stunts. Though it would be done in green-screen.

Yeah, RDJ's big comeback is essentially:

Iron Man
Iron Man 2
Iron Man 3
Avengers
Avengers: Age of Ultron

I don't care if it's five movies... it's one role, lol.

Well, we've now had trains, planes and automobiles. Even a helicopter. We still haven't had any death-defying boat sequences yet. I say that should come next.

How are they going to top PSH character as the best villain from MI3? The one in RN was good certainly better than the the guy in GP.

Can't Tom just do a death defying run on water stunt ?

lol probably, Seriously this guy can run ever Mission this guy RUNS!!!

also it's true we haven't seen a water boat chase sequence yet in all the Mission. Time for one

I really hope Ferguson comes back. She's quite a match for Hunt and I want to see that continued and it can only go further. Though apart of me liked the femme fatale nature of her character in this movie so in a sixth film if she were to come back, part of her danger from her mere mystique would be gone in favor of being an ally. That's not to say that could be just as interesting, I just loved how McQaurrie played that aspect up.

She could still be a bit of a wild card, though. In that conversation where she [blackout]proposes they run away together, it strongly suggested she was a bit more resentful toward their governments for screwing them over than Ethan was. And Lane DID genuinely see potential in her for joining the Syndicate. That didn't come from nowhere. If she's out there being a free agent for a while, I could see her and Ethan coming up on opposite sides of the morality line at some point.[/blackout] I'm not saying they should necessarily go that way, but I'm saying they COULD if they don't just want to have her join the team outright at some point. The foundations are there, imo.

That's all very true, she could be Hunt's Catwoman in a way, without the romantic angle. Different moral interests and methods in even bringing down a COMMON enemy down the line and conflict over that. That was something that wasn't exactly explored in this film.

Things I noticed on second viewing:

-You can see Lane in a listening booth in the vinyl record store in London when Hunt first arrives there. Hunt's guard was down because he didn't see Lane as a threat.

-Before the auction scene at the gallery to get the prime minister, you can see Luther tinkering one of the custom tranq guns for Ethan and Brandt.

Ok, I didn't realize that's what I was describing, but that is indeed exactly what I was describing and now that you've put it that way, I suddenly really want to see it happen, lol.

She'd make more sense than Renner. Not that I don't like Renner, I do. But if you're seriously going to try and replace Cruise whenever he finally stops (probably when one of his stunts finally manages to kill him), then Renner doesn't make a ton of sense in that regard.

It also occurs to me that MI:6 will be very telling when it comes to the whole "they see the female characters as interchangeable" complaints. If they don't bring Ferguson back, despite all of the acclaim that she's been getting, and you don't bring Paula Patton or Maggie Q back either (but try and bring in yet another new female character), then it's not going to look good (especially if Rhames, Renner, and Pegg come back).

I posted a Q&A with Christopher McQuarrie a while back in the Rogue Nation thread where he said they were looking to bring back Maggie and Paula but both were busy with their respective show/movie so it wasn't possible.

I'm aware of that, which is why this movie gets a pass on that. I was referring to if it happens again with the next one.

Ah I see, yeah the next one we'll see what happens.

Hey how about a spin off ? With Paula, Rebecca and Maggie Q. :hmr:
