I do enjoy the third mainly because you have Tom Cruise doing a lot of the stunts, so the camera is able to stay in close and not constantly cutting away. It is cool that Cruise is so willing to do a lot of the crazy stunts himself. I'm sure he does have some doubles now and again, but we get to see him do a lot of it.

Good question. Haven't seen her in a while. I was about to say she completely fell off but I completely forgot she was just in Warcraft

Any word of why Maggie Q didn't come back either?

Patton and Maggie Q were both filming their tv shows I believe.

Paula Patton starred in ABC's remake of a Korean murder mystery fantasy show called 'Somewhere Between' last summer. The show was cancelled after one season.

Maggie Q was probably unavailable and working for the Nikita TV show when they started work on the fourth film.

But also I mean, there are tons of characters from previous films who frequently don't come back. They might've wanted to use new characters instead.

I wouldn't be opposed to them coming back, but if they never do it won't bother me. Until Ferguson was announced as a returning character I'd gotten used to the female characters not returning and I'm betting that her character wouldn't be in the 6th film if Christopher McQuarrie hadn't returned to direct. He will naturally want to continue the dynamic that he created between Ethan and Ilsa.

Fact is in a series like this they like to bring in a new female character in each film. Partly for "eye candy" reasons, and partly because new female characters can introduce new potential romantic tensions/dynamics for Ethan. So I think Ferguson's character returning is unique and not something we should expect as a rule in future films.

Was Cruise doing more of the action back in 2006 or something?

Like, there's plenty in three that seems like it's actually Cruise and not a stuntguy, but that goes for the movies since then too. *Shrugs*

Cruise does all his own stunts. He even does all his own running, which is why it looks so silly.

Tom Cruise, Jason Statham and now maybe Dwayne Johnson too are the only big action stars of the 2000/2010's I can think of, like Stallone/Arnold were in the 80's.

And the female characters have typically been pretty strong in this series. One of the few good things about M:I 2 was Thandie Newton. She had great chemistry with Cruise and they made such a big deal out of the love story that it was strange seeing him marry some totally new woman in the next film.

Agreed on both counts. I know they were going with the "James Bond rule" but Bond is a misogynist womanizer, so of course his women are interchangeable. Ethan Hunt is not, and M:I movies are about the team anyway, so it makes no sense that the female characters should be interchangeable in these movies just because they're "the women."

They should've changed out the lead each time instead. Tom Cruise could've just done one movie.

Yeah. I feel like the Bond films set a bad precedent for that sort of thing that other prominent franchises sadly decided to follow (Batman, Indiana Jones).

Seeing Patton and Ferguson team up would have been pretty damn cool to see. Hell, I would take an entire film with just those two. Seems like a missed opportunity.

Ah, that may also be the case, but this is what I was thinking of:

In the lead up to Rogue Nation, director Christopher McQuarrie said that two women who had starred opposite Cruise in previous Mission: Impossible films, Maggie Q and Paula Patton, had been approached to star in Rogue Nation but neither was available to do so.

I'm not sure he does all of them. When the second film came out, my local newspaper said "90 percent." There are some shots where it looks like it could be a double in a wig standing in for Cruise.

I'm sure there's some he doesn't. From memory some of the crazier stuff on the motorbike in 2 was a stunt-double, which makes sense.

What I was wondering about, was that singling out of 3. Yeah, a lot of 3 looks like it's Cruise, but that seems to be the case with all of them, not sure he's doing any significantly less now than he was back in 2006.

IMHO if Cruise continues making these he needs to consider scaling back his stunts because now he's getting hurt and he's not getting younger. We want to avoid him getting hurt further. That ankle break was downright scary.

I saw the part of the stunt that made it into the film.
I have not watched the ankle break.
I don't think that I ever will.
