I'll probably write a longer review later but my very quick thought after seeing it was that: I LOVE IT. :awesome:

My favorite scenes were the motorcycle chase scene and the prime minister stuff.

Cruise is awesome as always. Loved how much Pegg was in this. Ugh. My girl crush Rebecca killed it. I love how taking off her shoes before kicking ass or running is her thing. How can you not love that? She's like the live action Catwoman I've been dreaming of. :hrt: I love how she got her own fight scene and it was with the main villain's head muscle man. I did not care for Renner in the last one at all but he was great here and had much, much better chemistry with the cast this time.
And according to Jeff Goldsmith's podcast at Nyc screening, that was none other than Cruise's idea. The man knows how to make things better when it comes to filmmaking for sure.:cwink:

Those cameras are big and heavy and bulky from what I hear. I know they could have figured out a way to securely anchor it, but, man, if the camera came off the plane.......The thought of that is even creepier than hanging off the side of the plane. Sounds like the plot for an episode of Castle. :woot:

It's not just the weight. True 15/70 IMAX cameras are very expensive and there aren't a lot of them. The cameras aren't bought. They are rented from IMAX. For instance, there were only like two in the whole world of the type of IMAX camera Nolan used on TDKR. They were on loan. One was broken during production when Anne's stunt double road the Batpod down the front steps of city hall and crashed into the camera. How much do y'all think that cost the studio? And to beat all the shot they were filming ended up on the cutting room floor.

So strapping an IMAX film camera onto a massive cargo plane and flying it around isn't something that happens all that often.

I'm in no rush to see this but I'm guessing Tom Cruise does a lot running/jumping from great heights without so much as a scratch.

There was a shot in the very first action sequence where he was running from the left side of the frame to the right and this was reused in the end title sequence... I don't know if those were done intentionally as in-joke for Tom's favorite movie activity.

Renner- it's a good year for Hawkeye

Two sequels and he gots fleshed out more

This was a very stylish and great action spy movie!

‘Rogue Nation’ Explodes $19.9M Saturday & Zooms To $55M Opening

5TH UPDATE, Saturday 11:40PM: Industry calculations originally expected the bulk of Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation‘s business to occur on Friday. Hardly so, as the Tom Cruise film made $19.9M today, just 2% down from Friday’s $20.3M. This puts the opening weekend for the Paramount/Skydance fifthquel at $55M. Should that figure stick, it will be the second best FSS for an M:I pic after M:I2‘s $57.3M. Good vibes for M:I5 is spreading, and it wouldn’t be surprising at this point if its Sunday, which is projected to decline -25%, is even better.

40 mil tracking my ass.
Cruise missile is on fire!!

Rebecca Ferguson blew me away.. she was bloody brilliant in this! She gave so much to this performance, and really did something special with her character. DC or Marvel, swoop in and grab this woman!

Tom Cruise, you sir are like a fine wine. Only getting better with age. Cruise shines throughout and the action sequences he's apart of are of EPIC proportion. And guys, it's really him performing them! P.s. DC. Now that you have Pine as Trevor, maybe you get Cruise as Hal Jordan? A guy can dream can't he?

Sean Harris, a bloody brilliant villain. Just beneath Hoffman as the best villain of this franchise to date imo. He was so menacing and outright creepy. The chess match between Ethan and Lane was so well done here.

Overall, this surprised me quite a bit. This sits at the top of the franchise for me, and I'm glad a 6th is on the way. Mcquarrie has to return and work with Cruise, they work so well together!

Franchise ranks:

MI5
MI3
MI4 (essentially a tie for 2nd)
MI1
MI2

Well the first one had an underwhelming third act. Plus they did the whole incredibly dumb "lets make Jim Phelps into the psychotic bad guy, because that won't upset MI fans AT ALL." To this day, I don't get how they could have possibly thought that that was a good move.

Ah I was not aware they went against the original so much, not knowing its history I guess it didnt bother me at all that. As for the thrid act, Ive seen better and Ive seen worse. Just always liked the original as it actually used suspense and mystery in spy film where too often those films go for a more action orientated approach, which although not always bad in itself just made for refreshing change.

My rankings would be something like:

MI5: Rogue Nation
MI1
MI4: GP
MI3
MI2

Rogue Nation blended the best bits of MI1 and GP together to make something like what MI2 should have been.

This movie was AWESOMEEE! Its probably my favorite movie of the year and my second favorite MI movie after Ghost Protocol.

I probably prefer Ghost Protocol overall as well, but that's not putting down Rogue Nation. It's a great movie, and I like all of the MI films. MI2 to a lesser extent, however. I think the original 1996 film still holds up to this day, and it'll always be one of my favourite movies. MI3 has some good moments, particularly with PSH, and he remains the best villain in the franchise.

I'd rank the series like this:

Ghost Protocol
Rogue Nation
Mission Impossible
Mission Impossible 3
Mission Impossible 2

I'm going to try and re-watch the series this month.

According to MCquarrie, we have some easter eggs from Non MI spy films .
Anybody catch any?

Adding Rebecca Ferguson to my shortlist of "actresses who could play Carol Danvers," and done.

Tom Cruise's 'Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation' Victorious With $56M U.S. Debut http://thr.cm/Kr1Ogr

Over the weekend, Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation opened to a better-than-expected $56 million in North America, where Cruise's star status has diminished outside of the spy series. The movie easily came in No. 1.

Cruise remains much more of a movie star overseas. Internationally, the $150 million tentpole launched to $65 million from 40 territories (or even 40 percent of the marketplace) for an early world cume of $121 million for partners Paramount and Skydance.

Man I love how well this movie is doing. It deserves it. Best movie of the summer so far and is the type of summer blockbuster I hope to see every year.

I'd say that this is probably a bit better than GP:

-The plot is better. GP had a rather simple plot, that was elevated by Brad Bird's direction and the performances.

-The villain is certainly better. I mean Michael Nyqvist is a damn fine actor. But, as written in the script, his character is barely a presence at all in that movie, they kind of waste him actually. Sean Harris's character isn't the deepest of villains, but they still give him more to do here and his sense of "menace" is far stronger.

-Ethan comes across as more of a real person here as well.

-I love Paula Patton in GP, but I feel like Rebecca Ferguson's role here is written better (or at least in a more interesting way) and she's FANTASTIC!!

-Ving Rhames has more than a cameo this time around.

On the flip side, I like the action beats in GP a bit better and I feel that Renner was utilized better there as well.

How many have seen the Going Clear documentary? Remember that? Did it change your view on Tom Cruise?

No because I go to watch Tom Cruise in movies for his acting, not his beliefs. I don't disagree that it's a cult but unless he's personally causing harm to people, I don't care.

Well he may not be beating the staff, but being the second most important person in that cult, he has to know about the abuse that goes on. And if he doesn't, maybe he should (quoting him from that leaked scientology video), you know, go and learn it.

Ferguson was great as previously stated. The movie was more intrigue and actual spying than action. I would just have liked that Ethan was as savvy and smart as in the firs MI.
Great movie overall.

Isn't Tom no longer a Scientologist? As of a few weeks ago?

Anyway, thought this movie was very good. I probably enjoyed it more than GP, which was well done but seemed lite on the plot to my recollection, though admittedly I only saw it once in the theater. This one seemed more calculated, actually kept me guessing for most of it, and did more interesting things with the action scenes and the moments that led up to them. I felt like the pace of Rogue Nation was closer to the first Mission Impossible, a little slower but built the tension better as you moved to the next sequence.

I just wish we could get more Ethan Hunt... he gets the job done but I feel like I haven't actually learned anything more about him since MI:III. Tom does it very well but during this and GP, despite their strengths, I felt like the line between seeing Hunt and watching Cruise has started to blur a bit.

Tom Cruise's 'Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation' Victorious With $56M U.S. Debut http://thr.cm/Kr1Ogr

Ghost Protocol had a slow burn and had a $200+ gross. Other movies opening around the same amount tapped out around $150+gross. Unless this movie has great WOM, it'll finish below it's predecessor domestically. However, this movie will probably make up for it as with usual Cruise movies, overseas.

I think it will have good WOM. I don't see F4 doing huge numbers next week, and UNCLE is a question mark. Whenever I've seen the trailer with an audience there isn't really much of a reaction there. It looks pretty generic to me personally.
