I think the Mission Impossible could be more akin to say, a spy version of Jackie Chan's Police Story series, esp if Cruise says he is competing with Chaplin with his outrageous stunts. (I also kinda wanna say Goldeneye in terms of vibe but my memory of that film is terribly hazy)

Either way, this really year is the spy! Kingsman, MI5, Man from UNCLE and then Spectre!

The movie has a sort of The Spy Who Loved Me thing going on with the Ethan/Illsa dynamic. "Two spies who essentially have the same goal, but are working for different agencies, so there's conflict at times."

Bourne>Hunt/Bond

:oldrazz:

I am a Bond fantastic, I bought the ridiculously expensive 50th anniversary blu ray set but (IMHO) Bourne Ultimatum is better than every Bond movie ever made including Goldfinger.

During the #AskMissionImpossible Cast Q&A, when asked about his next big stunt, Cruise said: "We have a bunch that we're working on right now", however he obviously didn't want to publicly reveal what they were yet.

It's got to be on the edge of space. Especially since commercial space flight are starting to become a thing.

If that isn't executed right that could be where this franchise jumps the shark.

I wouldn't like that.
It would have to depend on CGI.
And once Ethan pulls off a stunt in space ,whats next?
The Fifth Dimension?

Solid part of the series but I liked Ghost Protocol much better.

I give it to Ghost Protocol just by a hair over Rouge Nation. Maybe it's because of the cinematography in Ghost Protocol, but it's visually better.

As a diehard Bond fan myself I find GF overwhelmingly overrated. It boggles the mind why people love it so much. That being said, the Bourne movies are great but I don't think any of them are better than the Bond series. CR alone is superior to the Bourne movies and even then I find Supremacy better than Ultimatum.

I was hoping to see a big action sequence at the end of RN like we saw with the Burj Khalifa in GP, but I think from a story perspective, RN is probably one of the most solid entries in the franchise.

Also, when [BLACKOUT]Ethan said, "you knew this would happen, and so did I..." I was hoping to see some kind of Ocean's 12 flashback sequence where it showed Ethan and crew actually being one step ahead the whole time, even though it looked like they were behind.[/BLACKOUT] But I understand that wouldn't have really made sense in the context of this story. I think it would have been pretty cool, though.

I don't get that type of vibe from Ethan and his team.
It would have seemed out of place to me .

Yeah, it works better, and makes more sense, if they:
Finally manage to outsmart a villain who'd been two steps ahead of them up until then. It makes the victory all the more satisfying.

As for the climax:
Having just seen it again like an hour ago, I REALLY like that knife fight between Illsa and "The Bone Doctor." It was badass. And I like that they didn't do the cliché "kill the bad guy off at the end" thing again.

I think GP had a better set piece finale. It was far more inventive but overall RN is the best in the series.

Yeah the "automated parking garage fight" in GP as ridiculously cool/inventive. I'd truly never seen anything quite like it before. And yes, I agree that RN is a better overall film. It has:

-A better/more interesting plot (GP has a really simple plot, made better by good performances, great action, and terrific direction by Brad Bird).

-A better villain (not hard because Hendricks was barely a presence in GP).

-Rebecca Ferguson (I love Paula Patton in GP, but Ferguson got to play a more interesting/nuanced character).

-Bringing back Ving Rhames for more than just a cameo.

However:

-I think that GP was a bit better paced.

-GP had better/more inventive action overall.

-Uses Jeremy Renner a bit better imo.

Robert Elswit lensed both GP and Rogue Nation. They both look great.

Elswit's best work is There will be Blood. May he surpass it one day. BTW, Elswit is at his best when he is directed by PTA.

He's one of my favorite DPs. I love distinct the visuals of the two are while both being so Elswit.

I think the Burj Khalifa sequence is fantastic, and is possibly becoming more iconic than the CIA wire descent from the first film.

I'm pretty sure it wasn't said in the film, but do we find out if Ethan was bluffing with having memorized all the data?

And also, did anyone else think Lane was going [BLACKOUT]to shoot himself in the glass box?[/BLACKOUT]

I think he had to be bluffing. But it was the unknown for Lane. If he wanted to be absolutely sure, he needed Hunt alive.

I know, I just prefer his work for GP over this one. Like AnnFan said, the Burj Khalifa sequence might probably be why.

The Burj Khalifa sequence from GP is probably my favorite sequence in the entire series, and I adore that film, BUT I still believe Rogue Nation is the better film overall.
