I'd wait till Spectre comes out before declaring that one spy franchise is better than the other.

The opening scene with the plane. :wow:
The opera house scene. :wow:
The water tank scene. :wow:
The car chase. :wow:
The motorcycle chase. :wow:
The finale with the Prime Minister. :wow:

I mean, sweet Jesus, this was so clearly the best M:I film ever. Clearly.

It put most Bond films to shame.

Loved the Prime Minister scene. I shouldn't have been surprised, but I was.

Well QoS didn't happen in this dojo. :o

So if it is CR/Skyfall vs. GP/RN, I think it is a good race that we all win. :woot:

My favorite is still Casino Royale though. My favorite of the genre.

For more modern spy films, I would go Skyfall. Best cinematography for a spy action film period, and it was both a wonderful tribute to the old school Bond heritage as well as a modern spy film. The last 2 MI films were great, but I think I slightly favor CR/Skyfall.

The only disappointing action scene in the movie for me is probably the ending, it was extremely tense but as far as the actual action it wasn't nearly as good as the climax of GP(which for some reason people found underwhelming lol)

I throughly enjoyed the movie, and agree with those labeling it best in the series. The opera scene was probably my favorite.

And am I the only one who, when they said they had to take the P.M., immediatly thought "Better call Nick Cage"?

I thought most of the tension came from questionable loyalty rather than any real peril. I found myself wondering about Elsa up until the reveal that [BLACKOUT]the USB had been deleted by Attlee.[/BLACKOUT] After that, it was whether [BLACKOUT]Attlee was trying to cover up an embarrassment or actually pulling the strings over Solomon Lane.[/BLACKOUT] In the scene with Attlee, Hunley, Brandt, and the Prime Minister, I told my wife [BLACKOUT]"either someone's wearing a mask or Attlee's going to shoot the PM and reveal himself as a Syndicate member."[/BLACKOUT]

Normally, I don't like built in mechanisms where the writers can suddenly reveal anyone in the story to be a bad guy (it's what turned me off to The Following). However, I like that McQuarrie didn't play fast and loose with it. I thought he toyed with the threat of a double cross rather nicely without throwing those twists all throughout the film. The narrative remained very tight right up into the final act.

Glad to see the movie outperformed the tracking.

I haven't seen the film yet and I'm avoiding spoilers, but what was the general consensus for the standout set-piece sequence?

So many to choose from as they all delivered but will have to go with car/bike chase scene, top notch from start to end, equal parts explosive, smart and funny at times too "[BLACKOUT]You just had to pick the 4x4[/BLACKOUT]!!".

It looked good in the trailers but it was even better in full, so glad it delivered but there wasnt a scene that didnt deliver to be honest in terms of action.

That's interesting. I didn't see
Hunt disguised as Attlee coming at all but after seeing it I like that perhaps that scene is set up with the idea that out of those three people, either one of them is masked or is a Syndicate member and both will be revealed.
Needless to say it's a brilliantly constructed scene.

I love Skyfall, but it is kind of convoluted. Casino Royale is tighter, smarter. That being said, it has my favorite third act of the series.

I knew it as soon as the scene started. It was clear as day to me. It was well constructed and I really liked it, but it also reeked of, "this is about to get clever".

The only complaint I had about this movie... the ONLY one, was
the very end confrontation with Solomon Lane. It just seemed kind of needless to lure him into this trap. Ethan was a little winded, but seriously, he could have easily kicked the guy's ass. I mean, how many people did he take down in that film? He was a f***ing machine.
But regardless, it was still such an awesome movie.

I just can't decide now who wins the award for Most Badass Heroine of the Summer... Ilsa Faust or Furiosa?

I thought the movie was good, but I wasn't exactly blown away. It's certainly not close to the recent Bond movies, IMO. It's hard to explain, but the mission impossible movies just feel like "normal" movies. The action was good, the humor was good, etc, but to me the Craig Bond movies just feel superior. I think it might have to do with the superior cinematography, acting, and sense of gravity. It just feels more theatrical.

Anyway, I'd give Rogue Nation a solid 8/10. A good movie, nothing more nothing less.

I guessed it right away too and then I made the mistake of doubting my gut when [BLACKOUT]it was taking too long for the reveal to happen[/BLACKOUT]. I shouldn't have!

I noticed how Hawkeye kept looking at Attlee during the scene at the end. I figured it out right away that it was Ethan. Plus due to the fact that they showed the face mask earlier & never really used it

That's a very interesting way to put it, and one I hasn't considered. To answer your question...yes.

I'd say it's a pretty similar brand of heart-stopping suspense, yeah.

Thanks guys. :)

I saw the line in one of the clips. :funny: Combing a car and bike chase was a pretty neat idea in terms of fusing it to flow rather than feeling disjointed.

I'm loving both the Bond and M:I franchises right now. I don't even want to compare them because they're both at the top of their game (and genre), imo, showing most other action blockbusters how it's done.

Yeah it's a great period for awesome espionage action and adventure, it's not a competition as far as I'm concerned, the more the merrier.

I'd wait till Spectre comes out before declaring that one spy franchise is better than the other.

Or just don't compare them at all, it's like the whole DC vs Marvel stuff, clearly both are approaching the genre differently but there's no reason both can't be equally enjoyable.

Ooooooohhhhhh........that's kind of a tough one and I couldn't argue with anyone who picked either. I guess, for me, Furiosa.

Bald head, grease on her face, swollen face/black eye/bloodied, one arm, dressed like a I don't know what, and drop dead gorgeous.....not to mention a major league @$$ kicker.

I guessed it right away too and then I made the mistake of doubting my gut when [BLACKOUT]it was taking too long for the reveal to happen[/BLACKOUT]. I shouldn't have!
That is exactly what happened to me. :funny:

I started wondering who[BLACKOUT]was wearing the mask? Who was Ethan impersonating?[/BLACKOUT]

I didn't see that twist coming at all actually. It was one of my favorite moments of the film :D

LOL This happened to me as well.

-----------

I also think the latest Mission Impossible movies have been far better than the latest Bond movies. I just honestly don't understand the hype behind the Bond films, Skyfall was good but the action wasn't impressive and every other aspect wasn't good enough to compensate for that.

Ghost Protocol & Rogue Nation have a lot of tension, great/memorable action set pieces, good acting, good score, great humor and even good drama. They're the epitome of what blockbuster action movies should be imo

Faust easily for me. Furiosa was excellent but she didn't click with me. Every scene I loved Faust even more. She's just one of my favorite type of women in film.
