I liked the film but am i the only one who has GP and III ahead of it?

It didn't have as impressive set-pieces that GP had and its villain wasn't as good as Phillip Seymour Hoffman's character.

Great action flick! Cruise as always is superb and I love how this guy does most of his stunts and is so committed which helps in the movie immersion.

But whoa, Rebecca Ferguson was excellent, what an action femme fatale revelation. I've loved her since The White Queen and The Red Tent and knew she handles drama well. But she sells the spy persona from her action/stunt acting, badassery, and even her athletic, toned, muscular physique; it was all well balanced!!! She would've made a great Black Widow since she embodies everything about espionage and assassin in this movie; too bad we ended up with Scarjo in that role.

Bruce Malone No, because:

1. The set-pieces are still great.
2. The villain is still good.
3. It has a better (more interesting) plot than both of those other films.
4. The subterfuge/tension-building/espionage stuff is better here.
5. Rebecca Ferguson (cannot say enough good things about her).

It's funny, I agree with both of these statements, however my counter for each is that: GP had the more impressive set-pieces but RN had a better everything else, and MI3 had the better villain but RN had a better everything else (including set-pieces). So basically, to me, it had the SECOND-best set-pieces of the series and the SECOND-best villain of the series, and then on top of that it was much stronger in the areas where both of those had deficiencies. So ultimately RN still comes out on top for me, as I feel it's the most well-rounded of them all and has the higher overall batting average, if that makes any sense.

I guess Rogue does have that Jack of all trades feel to it in that regards.

I'll have to re-watch Rogue to really be fair in comparison as I've seen the other two multiple times but all of them are close and I don't think ranking Rogue under either of those films should be seen as an insult to the film.

Ghost Protocol also had the Kremlin sequence. The screen/projector gadget they use is fantastic, not to mention tense and hilarious at the same time. I think those sequences in particular - also the great opening at the prison, just pip Rogue Nation at the post. But I'd say Rogue Nation has the better plot, perhaps.

Better script, better villain, better female lead, and I'd argue better character dynamics in general. This is the first time I really felt Ethan's relationships to the rest of the team - his concern for Benji's welfare, Luther's loyalty to him and wariness of Brandt's intentions, all the wonderful push and pull with Ilsa and the team's varying thoughts and reactions toward her...it just seemed like these were all fully formed characters who fit together in much more complex and interesting ways than GP, imo. Don't get me wrong, again I ADORE GP and one of the reasons I did so was because of the team dynamics, but that was mainly all fun, with a shoehorned-in emotional thread about the people Ethan, Carter and Brandt "failed" to save - but I felt this one evolved that team dynamic and gave it some much needed (and more organic) depth and gravitas on top of the fun.

And as Loki mentioned, this one had the best old-school tension-building espionage elements since the 1st one probably, too. I feel like RN pretty much combined the strengths of all the previous installments into one beautifully cohesive whole, like the most natural evolution of all the elements of the series up to this point.

Honestly i thought Rogue Nation's set pieces were a little stronger than GP (still adore it). The plane stunt, opera house sequence, water tank, car chase turned motorcycle chase, and then the brain over brawn third act. I thought it was all fantastic.

That's a series highlight, and much better than MI2's counterpart IMO.

I love how Ethan acted 'out of it' after getting resuscitated after the underwater bit (like the fail of the hood slide attempt :hehe: ).

For me it wasn't as good as Ghost Protocol, but that's fine, the film was still realy good. Thing with Protocol is that i feel like they took all the right elements a Mission Impossible film should have, expecialy the team-up, i think it was more of an ensemble than any of the other MI films.

When we talk about GP action scenes being "better," I feel like "more inventive" would probably be a better descriptor. "Better" is a REALLY subjective term.

RN's set-pieces are great, but there also in the vein of stuff that we've seen before (well minus the water tank thing, I'd never seen anything quite like that before). I'm not even calling that a BAD thing, just an observation.

Really enjoyed the film. I liked it more than Ghost Protocol. But I'm impressed with the quality of the series overall considering we're five films in.

Awesome film. Might just be my favorite film of the year. Definitely the best Mission: Impossible film yet. The movie was suspenseful as hell, and just an entertaining blast. Tom Cruise is the man.

I'm pulling for this movie to beat FF this weekend.

I still remember when the series was being advertised as a trilogy in the DVD sets, kinda strange to think only of the first 3, as 4 and 5 have realy pushed the film series into one of the best ones right now.

I can't say which is overall better between the last three. I loved the Vatican heist and bridge attack. They're all special in their own way.

I love the knife fight! I love how Ilsa rescued Hunt underwater (so you can imagine her jumping down the water thingy like Hunt) where it was shown she could only hold her breath for 2 minutes underwater in the pool beforehand which didn't stop her from rescuing him.

Really I love the entire Turandot opera sequence and underwater sequence too.

That's what I loved about that rescue. She was at such a great risk of drowning because we were shown she could barely hold her breath long enough to make it in there in the first place, but she went anyway.

In addition, how if they exert too much energy like rescuing Hunt and trying to pull the hatch lever it uses up more oxygen. All those factors made me so in awe of her and this actress Rebecca executes Ilsa so superbly I'd rank her a close 2nd to Furiosa for this year's kickass/badass/awesome female character.

Ugh I just wish the climax of this movie was better, with the other movies(especially 3 and GP) there was a sense that their mission was actually... impossible! In this one it just didn't feel as intense.

the lady agent needs to be recruited by Marvel to play a hero or villain (preferably).

Just came back from Rogue Nation and I've been reading you guys on the last few pages and I agree with most of you: this is a solid, solid entry in the franchise but I must say I love Ghost Protocol so much that it didn't top it for me. BUT it has a better story, much more interesting. GP is fantastic in the team dynamics, the set pieces, the music, how inventive it is, but on the other hand RN also has a lot of truly spy-like moments with double agents and suspense and all of that that reminded me of the first one in many ways (specially in the foggy, night sequences in Vienna and London).

So yeah, between III, GP and RN, you pretty much have everything you'd want from a Mission Impossible movie. Each and every one of them have something special and are valuable on their own.
This truly has become one of my favorite franchises. And Tom Cruise, man... he is a movie star, no question about it.
