Mortal Kombat 2021

I remember being 9 or 10 yrs old watching and watching SF 95 in theater and being irate coming out of it. Even as a 10 yr old i could smell the bulls***. I was so angry that they couldnt give us one Hadoken. Not one!
I was around the same age, but I watched it on VHS. Everything looked so cool to me. No hadoken, but plenty of other things. There was also City Hunter with Jackie Chan. Street Fighter scene blew my mind at that time. Even though the movie is rather insufferable overall. Like live action Teletubbies.

This actually wasn't as bad as I had expected it to be, but at the same time it's no better than the original film aside from looking prettier. Still very cheesy, and a lot of wasted potential. When a franchise with such a rich lore cranks out something along the lines of this nowadays, I can't help but feel cheated.

i wanted to enjoy this more than i actually did.
i probably need to rewatch again and let this settle.
but my initial reaction is i am quite disappointed with this.

the fights were mostly pretty good, imo.
scorpion and subzero were pretty cool in this and were the highlight.

but the plot and way it was paced just left me

i think part of my dissatisfaction was i had fairly high expectations for this.
95 OG mk somehow set a high bar (what?? lol. paul ws anderson vindication.)

I enjoyed it. I think the reviews really helped lower my expectations so I was somewhat surprised I liked it as much as I did...

...but I do get and agree with most of the criticisms thrown at the film.

I'm also in the camp of, Cole could've, woul've, should've been Johnny.

Side note: What is it with the films and tattoos?
Annihilation had them too but I don't recall it ever being explained what they did/were for in that film.

Yeah I remember watching it on video as a kid and thinking it was complete trash. Bear in mind, I had no taste in movies back then (I loved Batman Forever and Demolition Man for **** sake) but I still knew Street Fighter was garbage.
Wait just a gosh darn minute here: DEMOLITION MAN is a legitimately good movie.

This is pretty much where I'm at with it too. Just something about it where I couldn't get fully invested. I'm not sure I'll watch it again anytime soon though, maybe before a possible sequel comes out.

I think I've only seen bits and pieces of the 95 movie over the years. Going to try and watch it tomorrow

Did we even see the same movie? I am shocked by the reviews on this forum being slanted towards the negative. To each their own. MK 2021 currently has a RT score of 55% which I do not even consider a trustworhy metric any longer. But an overwhelmingly positive Audience Score of 87%

I thought Pacific Rim (the first one) was a masterpiece too and a lot of people would disagree as well. For those of you who thought this movie was poor, I wonder what you thought of Captain Marvel and The Last Jedi. At least in this movie we can see characters having to learn by having their butts handed to them. I am so sick of all these overpowered protagonists who do not earn their abilities as well as underdeveloped characters the audience are not emotionally invested in. As someone who grew up in a culture where family comes first, I can relate to Cole. Also being of Asian heritage, I am disappointed time and again by the way hollywood has poorly misrepresented Asians and especially Asian males. This movie seems to respect this much more than many other movies. Shang Chi has a high bar to top.

As someone mentioned,

I thought Cole was going to be ripped in half by Goro only to be resurrected as Scorpion.
Oh well the movie still delivered for me I had negative expectations going in, thinking this would be the worst movie of all time (most video game adaptations are crap) and it turned out to be very entertaining. Reminded me very much of the movies from the 80s and 90s and pop culture before all the woke, cancel culture nonsense that is perpetually shoved in our collective faces today.

Last Jedi was the best of the Star Wars sequel trilogy, and a good film rather than just a nostalgia checklist.

Captain Marvel was a serviceable average MCU film.

I wouldn't usually compare either to MK. Thatd be like comparing a good New York strip or 1/3 pound Carl Jrs burger to a McD's $1 burger.

Sign me up for whatever qualifies as Captain Marvel.

Having just watched it, it was not terrible. Definitely could be better. Not a fan of some of the characterizations and some of their deaths but it's Mortal Kombat and I doubt most of them will stay dead for very long.

Most of the roles were well cast although I still think the role of Cole was unnecessary.

Captain Marvel and The Last Jedi are Citizen Kane and Casablanca compared to this piece of ****.

It's all ****, but each in their own unique way.

I did enjoy this 2021 Mortal Kombat for what it was but as someone that saw the original 1995 MK when I was 8, this scene had more intensity and heart than all of this reboot.

pretty much
