It’s very difficult to address this topic without, you know, saying, erm, uh…MOOORRRTAAALLL KOMBAAAAAT!
Ahh, much better.
New Line, in conjunction with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, is producing a new Mortal Kombat film, 14 years after their last adaptation of the popular video game franchise. Kevin Tancharoen, the man responsible for the popular web-series Mortal Kombat: Legacy (pictured), will be directing. “I’ve always been a huge fan of the games,” Tancharoen tells EW. His first Mortal Kombat project was a proof-of-concept video meant to be shown only to studios, but which was accidentally posted to YouTube by none other than himself. “I was mortified at first because I thought I was going to be in a mess of trouble with Warner Bros.” (You can check out the video below.)
However, thanks to the overwhelmingly positive response online, the studio did the opposite. In conjunction with the release of the latest iteration of the game, Warner Bros. tasked him with producing the relatively high-production-value Legacy. Then when the game hit paydirt — selling 3 million copies, far higher than expectations — they began thinking of restarting the movies, which, to be honest, aren’t remembered as one of the high points of the ’90s cinema. “I remembered the old films, which I don’t think left people hungry for more,” says Toby Emmerich, president of New Line. “But when you look at how well the game was doing and you look at what Kevin did with it just on his own, you don’t have to squint too hard to see how it might make a good movie.”
One of the problems with the earlier films was that they were PG-13. For a video game series notorious for its creative violence (and for irritating Sen. Joe Lieberman), that’s essentially the equivalent of the lame grey sweat they subbed into the SNES version. They don’t plan for that to be the case here. “Up to this point, we’ve only been talking ‘rated R,’” says Tancharoen. “I like realistic takes on things, I like it when it’s a little darker and grittier. And I want the martial arts to feel real as opposed to balletic and super-choreographed. It needs to feel brutal, because that’s the nature of the video game itself.” New Line is aiming on having the film hit theaters in 2013, and we’ll see then whether it’s a flawless victory or a fatality.

Great to hear the dude who did the web thing has been given full reigns to do a film. Can't wait to see what happens.

I think the reason fighting games-turned movies generally don't work is that most of the games don't have a great premise to begin with and the only real goal is to shove as many characters from the game in as possible on screen. MK is bit different in that it's mythology is quite in depth compared to its competition but the issue still remains that there's always going to be the tendency to want to give as many of the characters screen time as possible to appease the fans. There really hasn't been any movie based off fighting games to date that has successfully found a happy medium in terms of in depth story and amount of characters that appear. I'm not quite sure what the answer is because frankly fighting games are not the best sources for adaptation.

Please...for the love of the Elder Gods.......don't make it like the "Rebirth" short........

All the Batman talk and different takes on the same universe was pretty much what he said about Rebirth. I'm scared.

I want MK 1 with massive gore and Sub-Zero vs Scorpion, not the Rebirth "gritty" ********. I think it's lame how people use Nolan's Batman as an excuse to mess around with established content. Nolan may not have used perma white but there's no mistaking what character Ledger was playing. The heart of the character was there. You go too far and you've got something that's MK in name only, which is what Rebirth was.

Finally! I've been waiting for this news since the short film came along. I really hope it features characters that havent been represented (properly) yet in the past (Kabal, Ermac, Smoke, Kung Lao etc). And I also hope Lui Kang isnt the main character.

Don't get your hopes up too much. I would say there is a more than a 90% chance Liu Kang will be the main character.

His name is Christopher Lambert.

I think he meant Ryan Robbins.

I agree with MK being different to other fighting games regarding story. MK's story has always been a simple fight in a tournament save the world premise, with a fantastic mythology backing it up and Packed with many great characters. I would think it wouldn't be that difficult to do, in terms of a feature film. Mortal Kombat 1995 and the first game would be a good template to base it off of. Just less cheese more brutal action and a slightly darker tone. Assuming of course if Tancharoen and Uziel are basing it around the tournament (First game).

As for characters. I agree with the "tendency to want to give as many of the characters screen time as possible". I hate that. That kind of gimmick ruined Wolverine for me. Leaving characters out and saving them for possible sequels creates anticipation for said sequels. Just make a good movie first, establish the franchise and go from there. There doesn't need to be more characters show up than what we saw in the first game and movie IMO. That would just be for the first movie. Then if it finds success introduce a few more characters in the sequel.

glad to see they are pushing for an R rated film

they should keep the theme song from the first movie! :woot:

I didn't like the web series but the Rebirth trailer was awesome.
What worries me is that LAtimes is reporting that a new MK game is coming out along with the movie. I really REALLY hope that's not the case because a movie-tie-in after the excellent MK9 will hurt them both (the movie and the game).

Also, Liu Kang should NOT be the hero. Either go with Scorp like the Rebirth or Raiden like MK9's story (Where Liu thought he's the hero but he wasn't).

I personally wouldnt mind liu kang as the hero again. Ethier him or scorpion I would be happy with. All I ask is the story be worth my $10 ticket and the FX be Avatar quality. I also think they should look at redoing the theme song a bit to sepereate themselves from the previous 2 movies.

Maybe the best course of action is not to have a main protagonist. Perhaps a series of short stories with different character point of views intertwining could be an option. I dunno, I think something different needs to be tried here other than simply following a single character arc through a fighting tournament.

I don't think they'd make a movie-tie-in. It's redundant and irrelevant. The movie is like a tie-in from the games. They'll probably release MK10 around the time the movie is released, and I hope for that.

Also, Liu Kang should NOT be the hero. Either go with Scorp like the Rebirth or Raiden like MK9's story (Where Liu thought he's the hero but he wasn't).
Why not?
Liu Kang IS the hero. He's saved the Earth Realm for three times. I don't get the hatred towards him.

I also think they should look at redoing the theme song a bit to sepereate themselves from the previous 2 movies.
Then just a bit. Simply redo the part where the character's names are spoken for the name of the characters that will be in the new movie. Essentially, it should be the same thing. I just love the Immortals theme song. I really hope they bring it back.

well there is a few different mortal komat storylines they could follow. so i doubt it will just be just like the web series. It will probably be totally different.

A while back on Twitter the Director asked people who they think should make a new Mortal Kombat Theme Song. This was long before this was announced. So if anything it will be the theme but a new version of it

That's good to know.

I wouldnt mind a new theme song, treat it like how the terminator theme is done on youtube and the different movies. Make different interpretations of it but the same beats are there if you know what im saying, recognizable but different.

This could be horrible. It's fine it will be separate from the web series, but getting this guy to reboot it as a film could be a bad idea. To go from the web series to a big budget production may be hard for him.

But please, make this an actual narrative. Not just something where people are fighting every ten minutes.

Well, he has done Movies before, just not action or horror. This will be his chance to show if he can pull off directing his dream genre.

Thats why I loved the first movie, Raiden was there to guide us through the tournament and to provide exposition to the audience and fighters. I think you will need narrative at some point to break up the action unless they go in expecting every tom, dick and harry to know these fighters by heart.

for the reboot i would like to see the story told right! the comepition of Mortal Kombat goes back to Edenia w/Kitana(Milenna), her father, Sindel, Shao Kahn, Shang Tsung, this story must be told 1st before we can jump to the present w/Lui Kang, Sonya, Johnny Cage, Jax, Raiden, etc

Minor Characters
Shao Khan
King Jarrod/Queen Sindel

Villain Combatants
Shang Tsung
Goro
Scorpion
Kano
Mileena
Baraka
Reptile

Earth Combatants
Raiden
Lui Kang
Kung Lao
Sonya
Jax
Johny

Allies: Kitanya and Sub-Zero

other characters can have cameo appearances until the sequel where or if they'll be included, i.e. Jade, Stryker, Sheeva, etc

the characters I want to see have decent storylines that can be explored, and what connects them to the competition the rivalry between Scorpion and Sub-Zero, Kano and Sonya(Jax), etc...also Lui Kang/Kung Lao white lotus society should be apart of the story...All of these elements can make for a decent 2hr film.

So, who's everyone thinking for casting? I'd kill for Jason Statham as Kano.

Jason Statham only plays Jason Statham in his movies. Jason Statham would be KINO. Which is Kano In Name Only
