Mortal Kombat

It can be the ultimate blockbuster movie if done accurately/right enough and depending on production scale. It will have tons of The Raid type of fighting action, epic settings with different worlds and characters, some adventure and a strong superhero vibe.

It could be like The Raid,Avengers,Thor,The Lord of the Rings and The Matrix films all in a huge blender and pours a fantastic smoothy. Solid CGI,Quality Costumes,Profesionally done sets and a decent enough cast with top fight cherography and stunts could do wonders!

But will probably get watered down in order to appeal to as many people as possible. To me anyway any MK movie has to live up to the games violent characteristics and I don't believe in the current sanitised environment the studio would do that with the brand involved. I get the potential, but I don't believe a MK series would be allowed to reach it.

Well I hope for at least a Director's Cut/Unrated version!

Want to see the fights portrayed in a much more stylish way then what the legacy dude had done. They have to use their powers more and not like every signature move is spaced out. It should be frequent and part of their fighting strategy. Gotta have that energy, like The Raid only with powers.

Thought Mike Diva's Scorpion Vs Noob Saibot fight was way more entertaining then a majority of the legacy battles.

Not sure about that synopsis. I always get worried when a movie based on a property with a plethora of characters to choose from sounds like it's going to center around a brand new one. Though that description could fit Kang or Cage I guess.

Does that protagonist description fit anyone in the Mortal Kombat universe? Is it supposed to be like a gamer insertion thing? Like some random kid gets drawn into the MK universe from his perspective?

Liu Kang maybe Kung Lao?

I agree it will never be the ultimate blockbuster movie but it could still be a blockbuster movie if they would not dismiss it as a failure before they even begin production on it.

Video game movies in general are never given good writers, directors, actors, budget, or much of anything. It's always been half-assed.

Outside the first Mortal Kombat, how many video game adaptations have truly succeeded? Resident Evil is laughably connected to the source game and calling it a success is a stretch despite it going into it's fifth movie.

This time maybe. Wan is a decent director but he alone can't salvage crap if that's all they give him to work with.

Wan is producing bro not directing it.
Whoops. :o Anyways it shows at least someone more than a nobody is being given the task and that someone isn't infamous (Uwe Boll or Paul W.S. Anderson spring to mind) for making bad video game movies (though it is not lost on me Anderson is responsible for the only successful one, the rest of his work has been mostly derided).

I am so ready for this! With the right script, director and actors this movie can be everything.
The characters should be Raiden, Kung Lao, Lui Kang, Sonya, Johnny, Kitana, Sub Zero
Bad guys Shao Khan Shang Tsung, Scorpion, Goro, Mileena, Kano, Reptile, Baraka (s)
Cameos Jax Stryker Quan Chi Shinnok

The story should open up with the destruction of Edenia setting the scene about the tournament & those characters. Fast forward to Kung Lao & Lui training for the tournament & how they are reluctant to fighting alongside the other fighters Raiden recruits.
From there Raiden explains the history of the tournament, Kitana is a double agent, Sub Zero has his own agenda.

Kitana vs Mileena
Sub Zero vs Scorpion
Sonya vs Kano
Johnny vs Reptile
Lui & Kung lao vs Goro
Sonya & Johnny vs Baracka (s)
Final battle Lui & Kung vs Tsung

Deaths: Sub Zero Kung Lao Reptile Mileena Barakas

The movie ends with Shao Khan invading earth

I just wish WB would treat this franchise like a "universe" and slowly unspool it, rather than ram it all home in one movie. At this point that's not gonna happen even though it makes so much more sense from a story telling perspective.

MK just has so much cool mythology and so many interesting characters that would be electric on screen if done correctly. Doing a movie where there are cumulatively 10+ protags and antags and having them all fight in a tournament is tough business from a time perspective. I'd almost rather have them reshape how the whole "tournament" evolves - perhaps dial it down to one important match instead. Use other adventures within the movie to showcase special movies, fatalities, etc etc.

The thought of this franchise getting a $120-$150 budget with today's FX houses leaves my mouth watering.

No. They were supposed to do a completely new web show that got announced, there was next to nothing about the new web show beyond its announcement.

I believe Season 3 was in production at one point

Just adapt this as an HBO series instead. I honestly think it could be the next GoT.

It will be interesting to see who Wan brings in as director and what kind of cast they're going with. The cast will it be known actors or ones that known to a few but the general audience has no idea about?

If they were to go in a gory, R rated direction with this, should the heroic/good characters have the excessively gruesome fatalties they have in the games? I mean, they could still kill but in a more heat-of-the-moment way, like Kung Lao tossing his hat at a charging Baraka and decapitating him, as opposed to sticking his spinning hat in the ground and slowly dragging an already-defeated Baraka crotch-first through the brim.

Hopefully they resolve that Season 2 Cliffhanger. Otherwise skipping right to the X story line seems odd
Wouldn't hold my breath.

IMHO, the current pitch sounds like a way to not have a lead Asian character.

I can't even remember what happened in second season of the web show or how it ended.

Wouldn't hold my breath.

IMHO, the current pitch sounds like a way to not have a lead Asian character.

Also sounds like a completely new character.
