This is actually a discussion i heard on another forum, the PC is known for its shooting games. But there was a debate as to which one was the best, there are a few Doom,Quake,Half Life and Unreal Tournament.

Which do you think is the greatest/most important PC shooter?Vote on the poll and say why. There is also a 'Other' choice, just incase you think another game is worthy of the title.

I say Quake. Quake really kicked off the whole community vibe that is so strong with PC gaming.

Half Life/Counter Strike is also very important for the same reason.

Half Life... but only cause its the only one of these games I actually have. :o

Half-Life it has the gravity gun it wins by default:o

Duke Nukem 3D :D
Indeed. All the weapons, the gadgets, the monsters, the sound track, the environments, the atmosphere, the interactivity, etc. Back in 1996, nobody ever dreamed that anything like Duke Nukem 3D was even possible.

DN3D, Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, and Quake all share the glory of being the most influential PC FPS's ever, IMHO. Sure, there have been better games that have come out afterwards, but those 4 really set all of the ground work for the FPS's that we play nowadays.

I would have to say a tie. Red Faction, Unreal Tournament, and Jedi Knight. Red Faction had completely destructable environments, but it never really caught on in any other games. Jedi Knight had the greatest community ever, and thousands of created levels/mods that were being used more then included levels and no mods. And Unreal Tournament for really being the one of the first that was really focused on multiplayer, and an amazing engine.

PCs, or just "computers" in general? If it's just Computers, Marathon, no doubt about it. Everything "Halo" started here, several years before anything else even came close to doing the stuff that Marathon was doing. It was years ahead of stuff like Doom when it came out. It's too bad that you had to have a Mac to play it, or it would have had a much larger following.

I've never played System Shock, but System Shock II is godly, my second favorite shooter (right behind Deus Ex), I think it's the scariest, and toughest game.

Wolfenstein created the Genre, therefore it is the most important.

Counterstrike. yes i know half-life and cs are valve but cs is is the $%!^. and yah wolfenstein is the most important.

What kind of influence did Counter Strike have again?

I don't know of much influence from it, but to be fair, the original post asked for the greatest PC Shooter, and I gave my opinion.

Meh, the topic is "influential", but he asks for greatest too later, so I guess you're right

I suppose so, it is a bit confusing.

lol, whoopsies i forgot it said influential, i just read where it said greatest and most important. To me it's CS greatest and wolfenstein important, i guess wolfenstien is the game i choose for influential,

The greatest shooter is Riddick. The most influencial of all time is probably Doom or Quake.
