Movies You Didn't Like for the ONE Reason People Did

This is something that routinely bugs me. Sometimes you go to see a movie that you thought sucked or simply didn't work, and you can boil it down to one major reason. Other things could have been overlooked, but there was an actor, or a directorial choice, or a scene, line of dialogue, song selection or SOMETHING that stuck out like a sore thumb. But then, you talk to people about it and find out that they didn't care for the movie either, but the thing you hated the most about it was the only thing that they thought was good.

I think the best example I can find here (for me) is Superman Returns. I thought the movie overall was pretty underwhelming and disappointing, but it could have been saved by a strong performance by it's lead actor. Unfortunately, I found Brandon Routh to be pretty much non-existent in the role. I found his performance so wooden, that I couldn't enjoy the movie... and believe me I was trying to. I WANTED so bad to enjoy that movie. It was impossible.

However, there are many people who feel that while the movie was terrible, Routh was fantastic. While I tend to think that they must have been watching a different film than I was, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. So I'm curious how many of you have been in the same boat, and if so, what were the movies?

Terminator Salvation was mediocre and forgettable to me, but a lot of people bashed Christian Bale and praised Sam Worthington as the show-stealer, when to me Bale was perfectly cast as John Connor even if the movie kind of wasted it, and I didn't think Worthington did anything special.

Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2. Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst being cast along with all the stupid cheesy lines that were supposed to make the movie "light-hearted" like Spider-Man should be. Only Spider-Man makes wise-ass comments not cheesy and sappy comments. The tone of the movie was fine, but a lot of dumb decisions were made like Peter Parker walking down the street to Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head. And Alfred Molina's Doc Ock felt kinda weird. Mostly because he also made a lot of stupid cheesy one liners. Harry was too whiny in SM2, Peter was too whiny in both, MJ was too weak in 1 and too *****y and whiny in 2. Also, the formula to both movies is EXACTLY the same, both villains die, only one villain per movie (if anyone so much as says SM3 tried 3 villains and it didn't work, I'm gonna slap them! Look at BB or TDK. If you wanna see how that would work in a Spider-Man film-verse check out my fan-fic for SM4, 5 and 6 to see how it can be done in the movies) and the fact that everyone learns who he is in Spider-Man 2.

This. I fail to see what the big deal is about Sam Worthington. Maybe "Avatar" will change my mind.

While I would just say I was was just disappointed in Terminator Salvation, I agree with you about Worthington. I don't understand how so many people slagged Bale ("All he did was scream and yell and look pi$$ed") and praise Worthington when the guy hardly could do something simple as mask an accent.

Yeah, I don't think Worthington did anything special in Terminator Salvation and got praised for it, while I though Bale did fine and got trashed just because people were still pissed off at him over the rant incident.

Worthington was average at best, and yeah, he couldn't hide his Aussie accent very well at all. During some scenes it was painfully obvious (like when he's chained up and yelling at Bale). I think that Marcus (the entire character) was the film's biggest flaw. They built the whole movie around him, when honestly, I didn't give a sh** about him at all. If they had simply made a movie about John Connor starting the resistance (and if everyone hadn't turned on Bale after the rant was released) I think it would have been much more successful.

F**king McG...

For me, a lot of people are praising Harry Potter for bringing the teen romance front and center and leaving the Voldemort origin in the background, I felt the movie sucked 'cause it should've been the other way around.

Yeah, I haven't seen it, but I've heard that from a few people. IMO, that totally SUCKS because Voldemort's origin was the most interesting part of that book.

I don't blame McG for anything more than letting WB making it the Marcus Wright: Cyborg movie instead of John Connor: Badass Savior, and butchering it editing wise.

as for anyone who honestly held a grudge against Bale because of the rant, they should go **** themselves, seriously.

finally worthington getting **** for being overhyped before he did anything

Agree. Maybe I'd word it a little different though...

Actually who am I kidding?

Yeah, Worthington didn't do too much for me anyway. I liked Bale better, though the film was underwhelming himself.

Drag Me to Hell is another one for me. Everybody loves it for being cheesy and stupid, but that's why I hated it. It proved to me that Sam Raimi has even less range than I thought he did.

^ This FTW!

To me, the best part of this underwhelming movie was actually the actor who played Kyle Reese but Bale did far better than Worthington. There was so much hype surrounding the 'new guy' and he just didn't work for me. I felt no sympathy or any inclination to root for him. And the accent slips were freakin' annoying.

im sure you just a batman fan maniac...and in love with Bale. I love Bale's acting, but he was not good in this role. He was yelling the whole time and no one cared for his John Connor character.

Sam Worthington nailed his role to a tee...nothing is ever perfect dude, dont think bale is also.

Agree 100%, I really liked Yelchin as Reese and I felt that the movie took a downturn when he was captured and disappeared for a a long period of time.

Also, Poeman, I hate to pull the "opinion debating" card, but the whole point of this thread is to discuss various opinions of films. If you thought Worthington was great in T:S, so be it, but that just because some critics agree with you doesn't make you "right." Also, your statement that no one cared about his John Conner character simply isn't true; several people here (myself included) did, at the very least.

The character of John Conner was just underused, it wasn't his movie, in fact before bale campaigned for that role as opposed to playing marcus, conner was barely in the movie, he was hiddne living in the sub. the conner scenes were tacked on and edited throughout but they were still trying to tell the marcus story, it just didn't work.

Tranformers because the kids of the 1980s felt there needed to be a live action adaption of a cartoon they loved during childhood simply they thought it would looks cool.

Borat and Judd Apatow movies... people loved it for the crude humor.. i dont

i prefer smart comedy, witty jokes, or even physical humor lol

Oh, you're sure, are you? Yes, I thought Bale acted better than Worthington in Terminator Salvation, so I must be a Batman fanatic with a crush on Bale :whatever:

No one cared for John Connor? You don't speak for everyone. Clearly plenty of people on here couldn't have cared less about Marcus Wright.

I don't think Christian Bale is perfect. But Sam Worthington did nothing for me. He wasn't bad, per say, he was just "meh", and didn't feel like the character the story ought to be focusing on.

They where both mediocre.

And for the record the rant made LOVE BAle even more.
