Superman Returns Muscle Suit Discussion Thread

Sometimes I wear my muscle suit when I'm home alone...

Just remember that the muscle suit's purpose isn't to add bulk, it's to show the definition already there.

Oh yeah. Now I remember. Every time I see that avatar I crack up. Looks like he is the most rythym challenged white man in dire need of a laxative.

Routh gained about 25 pounds of muscle for the part, but he still had to wear a muscle suit to make him look even bigger.
That's false. The muscle suit was to show the definition that 25 pounds of muscle gave him.

You don't understand what a muscle suit is.

It's strictly for definition, not bulk.
Really?

The thinner the material on a person, the more apparent their natural musculature. How does adding more layers of material make the natural muscle definition more apparent?

Because the Suit was so elastic it squished the muscles and made them look deformed so the suit was padded in certain areas to give it definition. Even the thinnest material available would cover up a lot of muscle definition.

Padded? Muscles were padded? Muscle padding?

Precisely!

Yes it was padding but it was very thin and only used to show off what was already there. It was not meant to make brandon look any bigger.

How does padding "show off what's already there"? By definition "padding" is covering what's already there.

The padding was designed to add bulk to Routh in key areas - namely the muscles, as this was "a muscle suit," not "a fat suit."

I'm not arguing whether or not the tight Superman costume compressed Routh's natural musculature... my point is that the purpose of the padding was meant to make him look bigger and more muscly in that costume, and it provided him with artificial musculature.

I'm sorry, the costume designers in both Spider-Man and F4 must have been mistaken in what muscle suits are used for.

I don't see how a 1cm thick appliance of foam rubber would be used to add muscle effectively, Desk.
