In most situations, there's usually another alternative to physical confrontation. And in your case, since you called the police after the physical confrontation was over, there most definitely were alternatives.

I don't know your nephew or your family situation, so there's no point in me trying to guess scenarios for you to sit there and think up excuses for why it wouldn't work.

You didn't think clearly through the situation and handled it the wrong way. You tolerated the physical abuse and taught your nephew a valuabe lesson that you can physically abuse someone and get away with it.
