This epic adventure spans the Marvel Universe; from present day Earth to the realm of Asgard. I like Portman as an actress, and I'm glad she is not Sif. Jane Foster is an excellent role for her, and her name adds some star power and credibility, to what could potentially be a tough sell in Thor.

Weird that Natalie Portman will probably be getting a lot of press for a, while not minor, I doubt is more than cardboard superhero dynamic.

Since Kevin Feige said there won't be a Donald Blake, I've got a theory for Jane Foster's role in the film: once banished to Earth, Thor will be considered insane and will go to some mental institution. Guess who's gonna be his nurse...

Eh... I've never really been a fan of the "Thor is insane" route. I imagine it'll be something more along the lines of: he's used to being nigh-invincible and gets his ass kicked, and winds up in a hospital, where his nurse is Jane Foster.
