Netflix’s “The Devil All The Time”

Netflix held a virtual premiere last night but I don’t think video is out anywhere.

So far the reviews seem split in almost even thirds between "It's great!" "It's decent," and "It's bad!" Seems like mileage will vary a lot based on how well you can roll with the misery of it.

Regardless of the reviews I just can't wait to finally see it. It's easily one of my most anticipated movies of year and only a week away which couldn't make me feel any happier.

I swear, after Tenent and now this, if I have to read one more review complaining about a plainly non-comedic movie not being funny enough, I may have to burn down the NSFC

Seriously, though, I feel for Tom Holland. He delivers, by all accounts, an incredible performance yet is getting bad reviews because "sPiDerBoY nO mAkE jOKe." It's so unbearably dumb. But hey, with so many prestige flicks getting "mixed reviews" it might actually force the Academy to nominate some off-beat films for once.

Seriously, though, I feel for Tom Holland. He delivers, by all accounts, an incredible performance yet is getting bad reviews because "sPiDerBoY nO mAkE jOKe." It's so unbearably dumb. Especially when, between this and Cherry, he’s obviously trying to show he can be more than just “Spidey-Boy”.

I do wonder how his legion of teenage fangirls is gonna take to him doing a movie like this.

Tom Holland still has a very bright future in the movie business though IMO. I really can't wait to see what he brings in Cherry and the praise he is receiving for this film lets me know that he is definitely more talented than just playing Peter Parker/Spider-Man which is what I wanted to hear. I am equally excited to see what Battinson shows us as in this well even though he's done darker roles before.

Holland's been supremely talented since he was even younger. If you haven't seen The Impossible from 2012, you should. His performance in that movie kinda reminded me of Christian Bale's in Empire of the Sun and had a similar overall arc (boy overcoming hardship and becoming a young man).

Really had a blast with this movie. It's a slow burn, but i find it to be very enjoyable. Holland is fantastic and Pattinson is extremely unsettling in the best way. I wish he had more to do.

The waiting was worthy! I really like this movie, outstanding performances. Besides obvious MVPs Holland and Pattinson, I like to mention Riley Keough. The actress of Emma was a highlight for me too.

They changed a little bit from the book, cut some hard background stories from the cousins.

I dug the hell out of this. Great directing, acting, and score. This is probably the first good movie I've seen this year. It may not mean much given the circumstances, but I'd feel the same way without it.

I pretty much loved this. I could not have expected it to turn out any better honestly, although I do admit that I already have kind of a weakness for these Southern Gothic period pieces. It's super dark and gets pretty brutal and bleak at times, but even with the almost 2 and half hour running time I was never bored and I thought the pacing was great as well, especially considering the length.

Battinson and Holland are fantastic in this even though I thought the cast overall was really solid, especially Bill Skarsgard who should be getting more praise IMO and I could not get enough of seeing Sebastian Stan with that beer gut lol, but damn was he convincing in that role.

[Detective Conan]

This was a good movie. The performances, direction, and score were top notch but the first act is a little slow for me, though once it picks up, it really picks up. As others have said it’s a tonally grim film but I think the film justifies its tone well enough. Standouts for me were Pattinson with that cool high-pitched southern accent. He really swung for the fences and I think it worked beautifully. Only issue I had with the movie is I felt there was at times too much narration; enough to the point it kind of hindered some intense scenes for me. All in all, I had a mostly good time with it.

Didn’t love it, but appreciated it a lot. 7/10.

After Palm Springs and The King Of Staten Island, this might be the third best movie I’ve seen all year(which obviously isn’t saying a whole lot).

I am a little torn between wishing the screenplay hadn't tried to capture so much of the book and instead had focused a bit more on just Arvin's story and yet still liking what we do get of the other stories. I think the editing takes some getting used to because of how it jumps around in time a bit and between narratives but things start to come together mid-way through the movie and I think the last act is really engaging. I don't know if the film found a great way to conclude--it feels like it is almost there but maybe needed one more shot or thematic tie-in to resonate better, but my feelings could change there on a rewatch because I kind of felt like things were happening that might have been too subtle for me to pick up on right away.

Holland was great. Whole cast was really good, honestly, that really helped keep the film clicking through most of its scenes. A lesser cast and this could have been a chore to get through. Pattinson--I'm not sure exactly what he was going for, it was kind of ridiculous...but still kind of worked? I dunno, I "enjoyed" his performance, I guess you could say. Also thought all the actresses did really well and elevated their characters.

Technical credits were very good for the most part. For as violent and dark as the film is at times, it does end up having a sort of subdued impact because of the looseness of the narrative and all its threads. But that's not necessarily a bad thing, and I definitely felt drawn into the film for the majority of its runtime.
