Netflix, Mike Flanagan back at it again with 'The Fall of the House of Usher'

Well that kills my interest. I hated Suspiria (both of them) and Malignant. And after the disappointments that were Bly Manor & Midnight Mass it seems like Flanagan's on a downward trend. Obviously I can't speak to the quality of Usher, but I'm not exactly hopeful now.

Still, good casting with Greenwood. It's too bad they have to reshoot all of Langella's scenes but creeps have no place on a film set.

I mean, he opens with "I have been cancelled. Just like that.", so you know its going to be good.

Dunnig Krueger strikes again, always so sure that the explanation will vindicate, and not totally justify.

I was gonna debate with you on Midnight Mass but I see you hate Suspiria, so, clearly, we just have different tastes. (I didn't care for the new one, though).

I liked Midnight Mass well enough, it just wasn't as polished as Hill House or his films. It was too unfocused, with an over reliance on monologuing for character development. The twist was easy to see coming, and once it was revealed what the monster actually was it kinda sapped my enthusiasm a little (I would rather have had it be something new). I didn't much care for the ending, either. I loved the mood and atmosphere, though, and the acting was great all around.

As for Suspiria (the original), it was probably an exaggeration to say that I hated it. It was more that it didn't do anything for me. The hammy acting, the horrible dub, the dated horror elements, there just wasn't anything there for me to connect with.

I'm still looking forward to House of Usher, but my excitement has been tempered a little. I just hope the show has more in common with Hill House than something like Drag Me To Hell.

In any other job, if your boss is telling you to cut it out and you don't, the firing is completely justified.

Yet, for actors, its "artistic restraints".

Unless he already had a few irons in the fire before the deal expired, it seems like Usher will be Flanagan’s last at Netflix.

Oh well, knowing Netflix they might have cancelled his other future projects since Midnight Club didn't do great.

It makes sense. Netflix needs the money to pay for more specials of rich comedians taking shots at trans people.

I binged Midnight Mass reasonably quickly and still enjoyed it, but making it weekly would’ve been interesting.

I don't know if a weekly release would've worked for Midnight Mass. I love it, but the show is really slow. I wasn't hooked yet after the first episode, there's a big chance I could've forgot to watch the second if I had to wait a week.

Netflix is a goner, when Stranger Things is over…as well as the binge format

I love the binge format. Even if they do away with it, I will just wait until the season is over to finish it over a weekend. Personally speaking, there’s a higher chance I will drop a show if it’s released weekly and it gets boring to me and I lose interest. If all the episodes are there, I’ll just drudge through the boring episode to get to the next one.

Definitely agreed with Midnight Mass. There’s
enough curiosity to keep you going when in binge format but others might forget/get distracted with less hype week to week in a slow build show like this.

I'm with Flanagan on this one. Mystery shows work much better in small doses and gradual build-up.

Binge is best. I'd prefer to choose how I watch something rather than have it dictated by a subscription-prolonging release method. I don't think I'd have had any more enjoyment watching a Flanagan show over several weeks.

I like that amazon do physical releases though. Always appreciate having that choice. Probably would have bought Midnight Mass and some others.

You can always wait for a weekly series to end to binge-watch it, just in the same way that one can watch a show that all its episodes are out, in their own time. And before you say "spoilers", that applies to both cases as well. It's pretty much the same thing on that regard.

Indeed. I do that quite often. It's often my preference, but I'll do weekly if I'm watching with somone who doesn't want to wait.

If they drop all the episodes at once, you can always sparse it out and watch it one episode a week too, if you prefer the weekly format :o

It's a shame, they release so much good stuff (half of my Top 15 movies this year are Netflix, The Sandman was possibly my favorite new show) but do a poor job of supporting their best material.

What were your top Netflix films out of interest? (in case I’ve missed a bunch :cwink: )
