Fantasy Netflix's One Piece Live-Action TV Show

Just going to post the good before I get into what ever that is...

Vivi, Robin, and Smoker look good. I continue to love the set design on this show. Just so fun.

That sounds awful. But just so I'm clear. The actress in that image is playing the incredibly light skinned character from the anime. Is there a reason you'd expect an actor of Arabian or Middle Eastern descent to play the character? Is the character described as such?
Alabasta is steeped in Middle Eastern and North African influences.

There are white Arabs and white Egyptian too.

This is literally her father

Okay, so I decided to look it up, and you're right. Egypt was an influence as well as Mali. But so was India according to the wiki:

According to Eiichiro Oda, Arabasta was inspired by ancient Egypt.[24] The Egyptian influence is evident in building and clothing designs, the hieroglyphs, the names of the royal family, the retainers, and food mentioned (knafeh, mulukhiyah). Atop its buildings (particularly in Alubarna) are dome structures all reminiscent of architecture for ancient churches and mosques in Egypt.

The official book Rurubu One Piece also draws several comparisons between Arabasta and India; in particular, numerous similarities are noted between Alubarna and Jodhpur. The Indian influence is most evident in the many "onion" domes atop its buildings (particularly in Alubarna), a staple of Indian—particularly Mughal—architecture such as the famed Taj Mahal.

Rurubu also connects Rain Dinners with Luxor Las Vegas (an Egyptian-inspired casino), as well as Yuba with the Great Mosque of Djenné in Mali.

The studio execs of Tomorrow Studios have donated directly to the IDF and wrote letters to the Nobel committee trying to discredit Bisan Owda and have her nomination withdrawn.

They didn't want to cast an Arabian or Middle Eastern woman as Vivi because it would be too reminiscent of Palestine. I hate how Hollywood has been erasing Middle Eastern culture for decades and replacing it with Indian actors. It's racist af

Apart from that there is no problem, lol

This makes no goddamn sense. Remember, Oda likely has a very strong voice on casting. You have issues with it, take it up with him. And no offense, to call this a conspiracy over decades moves this from a potential concern, to a conspiracy theory. One that has connetations that you don't want.

I guess they're saving a first look at Crocodile for later- though even Manganiello himself shared the teaser. Then again, between Whiskey Peak, Little Garden, Drum Island, and any potential filler stuff covered, it's a while before we get Crocodile's first appearance. I actually don't remember if we get a full first reveal of him prior to Alabasta (not counting the brief phone call he has with Sanji in Little Island, where I believe you don't fully see him.).

I imagine you are only going to get a teaser of him in s2. Production is moving into s3, so I imagine his casting was do to get him on board before s3 started shootin.

Oh it found its way on the One Piece subreddit.

loved season 1 of this and it's probably one of the best things i've watched in the last 2 years.

season 2 looks even bigger and more epic now.

my friend keeps trying to get me to start on the anime...but i'm intimidated by the 1000+ episodes.

I feel sorry for the actress. She doesn't deserve the hate. These racist white producers are using pocs people as pawns and playing us off against each other to hide their hatred of Arabs. They love Arab aesthetics, but not Arab people

I hate how they try to gaslight critics. There is nothing wrong with wanting MENA actors for characters inspired by Middle Eastern and North African culture

How do you know of the actresses they tested, the one who won wasn't the best?

The culture that is taken from for the land is African, Middle Eastern, and India. You keep leaving that last part off. The character depicted is ambiguous at best. If you want to complain about stealing culture, complain about Oda.

And even then, it says they send their choice to Oda, who cares about the actor embodying the character. So here, he thought they did. So what's the complaint?

On a side note, I'm kind of blown away by the idea that there is one specific way anyone from Egypt or any Middle Eastern country is suppose to look. Imagine if someone posted a, "this is what an American actually looks like" and it was just a very pale white man. That is dicey as hell.

Not true. There is nothing Indian in Alabasta. ARABbasta. It's so obviously an Egyptian inspired island that it couldn't be more obvious

Oda himself literally said it was inspired by Egypt

Stop defending the erasure of Arab and North African culture in Hollywood by zionist producers.

Did you miss this post?

Also what exactly do you think the people of ancient Egypt looked like? It had several port cities. Plenty of Nubian folks there.

Stop reducing people of a land to one very particular look.

Did you miss the part where Oda literally says it's based on Egypt? Which do you believe more, Oda's words or Wiki, where anyone can write?

That’s just an excuse rasicst are using to exterminate Arab and North African from hollywood.

Arabs exist, Arab culture exists, Arab people exist. Deal with it white guy.

I'm done with this conversation! Good night

It comes from an offical One Piece book. Though it now has been edited on the wiki. Probably by one of the racist asshats attacking the actress.

Did you just assume my race?

You want to slip North Africa into this conversation, but then want to ignore what a lot of folks in North Africa, including in Egypt look like.

There is a reason why a lot of the racists attacking the actress are calling her "too black". It's because in these situations, it's always the same. Even the photos you are posting are erasing the darker skin folk of North Africa, including Egypt.

Alright take it down a notch. If you can't debate this without taking cheap shots like that, then drop it. That goes for everyone. If it happens again, warnings and vacations will be handed out.

I will just say this, it is okay to have complaints. And I am sure there are plenty of issues with middle eastern casting to deal with. As dutch-german uber white guy, colorism debates make me uncomfortable, because it is very much not my place to say if someone is the right color or not.

Where I object is that you claim this is a decades long conspiracy, and go to an antisemitic place, rather than the very, very obvious reason on why islamophobia is fairly pervasive in US culture for 21 years. Yes, the production company's CEO supports Israel. But unless they have said something very clear, I would be hesitant to create malice out of assumptions.
