Fantasy Netflix's The Witcher - General Discussion Thread

McGowan is honestly my shoo in for Geralt thanks to his portrayal of Charles Vane, and I loved Black Sails so that doesn't hurt either.

I don't want to get my hopes up too high for Zach McGowan since he's my emotional top pick. I want to be open minded about who might get cast in case it's not him.

But I feel like he's already got everything down between the voice, the look, the hair cut, and even Geralt's build, though that's based on the games I suppose.

The game's aesthetics might be influencing my own interpretations but even from the books it seems like the game's depiction seems pretty accurate to what was written about him.

Even so, I feel like the games got so much right about the world of The Witcher that I hope they do take some inspiration from it.

I would say the game Geralt captures book Geralt fairly well outside of it seems game Geralt can be way more over-powered between the Witcher school gear, sign upgrades, mutagen enhancements, et al.

But the Witcher school gear was one of my favorite things about Witcher 3. Love that Grandmaster gear and decorating my villa.

I know it wasn't the best armor in the game but as soon as I could rock the Wolven armor I pretty much used it all the way through Blood and Wine haha.

It really is a shame that Sapkowski is so salty about the games because I think they did a phenomenal job of bringing his world to life.

I agree, I think for the most part it honors what he created very well. And I don't say that lightly. Like I feel they honored his source material more than Jackson/WETA did for Lord of the Rings.

Like they actually took Gwent and created a working card game around it. Most of what happens in the games has some sort of reference or basis in the books.

Is the guy still bitter about it? I just bought all the Witcher audiobooks.

Some audition tapes...the Yen audition fares better but big no on the dude and his Geralt.

These stories that push the social media angles really annoy me. Like someone following someone automatically means they are working on the show.

I find it highly unlikely either of those two actors will get cast. Let's just get Zach McGowan's audition tape already. That's the one I want to see.

This guy reading as Geralt, Max Beesley, reminds me more of Olgierd Von Everec from the Hearts of Stone DLC. I think he could play some other characters, but I don't love him for Geralt. But he reads way better than the Michael McIntyre guy.

Yeah, he was a beast on that show. Really, everybody was. That show just had a stellar cast and really strong writing and direction. It's a shame it didn't get the attention that shows like GoT did, because it was just as good.

He even looks like Olgierd haha but i doubt the show would ever bring that character in unless it decides to adapt the games stories after the books material is exhausted.

The books ending was kind of anticlimactic and much prefer how Blood and Wine ended the series.

Yeah if they ever made a Hearts of Stone story arc, get this guy to play Olgierd, lol. He looks and sounds a lot like him.

Do they even have the rights to adapt the CD Projekt RED only creations? I'm not sure they do. That'd probably have to be a separate deal. Because Olgierd

Not sure, but they've got so much content from the books to adapt that I doubt adapting stories from the games is even on their minds.

Has the writer of the books got any involvement with this project?

Henry Cavill to Star in ‘Witcher’ Series at Netflix

Henry Cavill will play the lead role in the upcoming Netflixseries based on “The Witcher,” Variety has learned.

Based on the best-selling fantasy series, “The Witcher” follows Geralt of Rivia (Cavill), a solitary monster hunter, as he struggles to find his place in a world where people often prove more wicked than beasts. But when destiny hurtles him toward a powerful sorceress, and a young princess with a dangerous secret, the three must learn to navigate the increasingly volatile Continent together.

As Variety reported exclusively last year, Lauren Schmidt Hissrich serves as executive producer and showrunner on the series. In addition, Alik Sakharov, Alex Garcia Lopez, and Charlotte Brändström will all direct portions of the eight-episode first season, with Sakharov also serving as executive producer.

Well not my first choice but I liked him in Mission Impossible so let's see what he brings to the table.

Definitely not my first choice. We shall see. On one hand, I'm glad the suspense of knowing who will play Geralt of Rivia is over. I know Cavill is a fan of the games. IMHO not the most inspired choice. But will see where it goes.

Hard to see him still being heavily involved in DCU if this show takes off and becomes a hit though.

Well he wanted it.

I just discovered this world through the phenomenal witcher 3 game just downloaded the second one the game has ruined me I can't play another RPG again lol

I seen a Henry Cavill interview with where he states how much of a fan of the series he is and said he was actively pursuing to be part of the show so this doesn't come to a surprised but going by the games never read the books he looks all wrong for the role but we will see

Can't wait to see it

In my perfect world they would cast Hathaway for Yennefer

The Superman is dead. Bury it. Consider this the lesser of two evils.

Henry’s casting will ensure this show gets a high profile, which is a great thing.

Onwards Roach!

So... let's hope Eva Green or Kate Beckinsale are in the running for Yen. If they are going high profile then Yennefer's actress definitely has to be.
