New DTL Recruitment Thread

Oh what the heck... I'm in.

Dream Team League Season VII Application

Screen Name: JewishHobbit
Co-Owner Screen Name (if applicable):

Team Name: The Odd Alliance

Major Rules:
Teams consist of 5 characters; 2 Ubers, 1 Medium, 2 Regulars (think Superman & Thor, Aquaman & Vision, Batman & Spider-Man).
Characters can come from mainstream Marvel and DC universes including Vertigo and Wildstorm. No Amalgam.
Characters above a certain power level are considered too uber and are banned from use. The Silver Surfer and Green Lanterns are towards the top of legal characters.
You can carry a roster of 12 characters to build your team from.
Each week you will write a match of how your team will defeat your opponent's team.
Your teams are allowed 24 hours of prep-time on the battlefield before the fight where they get to see the pictures and names of their opponents. No using any outside resources during prep-time they wouldn't normally have access to.
You will have 2 days and 2 posts to write your prep-time (if any) and battle. Then you will have 1 day and 1 post to write a rebuttal to your opponent.
Then there will be 2 days for readers to vote for who they are most convinced to win.
Then there will be a 2 day break to rest and plan the next week's lineups.
The season will start with a draft, so you will need to create a draft list of potential characters for you team's roster.
You must be willing to commit to at least 12-14 weeks of play.
There will be at least two bye weeks without play to rest. Extra days for writing and voting may be granted for holidays.
Occasional theme weeks will occur throughout the season to spice things up (special battlegrounds, mind-swapping, regulars only, etc...)
In all matters, final decision rests solely with the Commissioner and are final.
Sign your screen name here to indicate you have read and agree to these, and all other, rules:

Was that really so hard? :)

There, signed!

Oh, and I'm too tired to read through the rules again but I may have overlooked it... is there still rules on how many Marvel and how many DC characters you have to have in your line up or play per week?

As of last season, no. You could have any number from any universe.

Nah, it gets easier. And once you start playing you catch on quickly. This is literally the hardest part of the game, but it's fun :)

And JB... you've gotten more... British or something... since last we played together. Someone bite your balls or something?

Also, to make those draft lists a little more important, I think I'm going to lock the first week of rosters. So whatever team you get after the draft is the one you have to use that first week. You can build you lineup from those 12 characters only.

But don't stress too much about building a draft list. You can probably come up with 20 or thirty characters you'd like on your team of the top of your head in five minutes. The hardest part is usually picking those last few (although you don't need to limit yourself to 72), and figuring out the order.

I'm not even sure I can come up with 20 that I know well enough to make a decent argument in their favor.

Do you need the list written out a certain way or anything?

Also, I have some questions on character rankings, but I'll post those over in the proper thread. Just FYI. I guess we might as well keep things organized.

Just a list of names in a pm in in the order you want.

Unlike CoM, I do this draft manually since we don't have a definite character list.

So do you give everyone a specific number of Ubers, Mediums, and Regulars or should we be mindful of that as we compose our list so we aren't stuck with tons of Ubers and then minimal of the rest, etc.?

They way I've done it is just go down the list, giving you your next available character regardless of rank. That way you can sort of build your team with the number of each rank you want.

Don't sweat it too much. A good chunk of my DC character knowledge, and most of my Marvel character knowledge, has come from this game. I couldn't believe how much I learned during the first season alone.

The list doesn't have to be all characters you know a ton about. Look at the X-Men books alone. There's gotta be a couple of dozen characters where just knowing about their powerset is enough to use them.

And you can use alternate versions of characters. Convinced someone is going to pick up Superman before you, then just pick up Kal-L instead. Or Superman Blue. Or Superman from Kingdom Come. Afraid someone's going to take Hal Jordan, then just include Kyle, or John, Alan, Guy, Kilowag,... Can't get Bruce Wayne Batman, how about Dick, or Batman 1 million, or even AzBats?

Excellent.

I would love to get all the lists in by this weekend, and start the first match next weekend. Might not be possible because work is currently kicking my ass and I haven't had time to sit down and whip my own list up. Maybe I'll get to it Friday during Stargate.

I'm working on mine. I have 43 characters and am trying to make my way up to around 75. I'm hoping to be finished with it by tomorrow, if not sooner.

Well, I got my 72 characters together. W, do you draft them in order of what's on the list or do you draft rankings (everyone's 1st Uber, everyone's 2nd Uber, everyone's 1st Medium, etc.)?

Just so I know if I should keep them grouped by rank or mix them based on how I hope to draft them.

Does the list have to be organized a certain way? 72 characters is hard enough and organinzing it might make it tougher

Also, is it too late to change my team's name? I have a new one I like better

You picky bastard! :cmad: :p Just put the team name you want on the draftlist you pm.

If you think sorting 72 is bad, you should try sorting 512 for Contest of Marvels!

The draft works just like it did in CoM.

Whatever character is at the top of your list that hasn't been taken is the next character I give you. If order doesn't really matter to you after the first 10 or 20 or whatever, then just put them in any order.

There's lots of strategies you could try (like taking lower characters before someone else does just to screw them up, trying to make sure you get a good balance of rankings, ...). But really, don't worry about killing yourself over sorting. The draft is mostly to try and get a few characters you really want first, then some nice-to-haves later on. And they'll be the occasional character you add that you don't know much about, but turn out to be kick-ass once you start looking into them. Those are the real gems.

Question: If Alternate universe versions of characters are allowed, would movie versions count as alternate universe versions of a character? Especially if there were comic tie-ins to said movie?

No. It has to be from one of DC's 52 Earth's, or a main Marvel universe.

Also, we have a 3 issue rule (I think it used to be 1 issue, but I'm making it 3). Basically, your character has to be well-defined through at least 3 issues. No using Validus with a GL ring who appeared in the background of a single panel.

Two questions: Where can I find what each character is ranked as, and must the characters be from either Marvel or DC?
