New Gods. Ava DuVernay to direct

Question guys, how do you think the denizens of Apokolips should look? Some characters like Darksied and Kalibak I can see being CGI due to there sizes. But a lot of other Apokolips characters do resemble humans in appearance (including Steppenwolf).

In JL the aesthetic Snyder seemed to be going for with Steppenwolf was more monstrous/alien than usually portrayed. With Black/grey/red being primary colors used.

Apokolips CG-heavy
New Genesis practical vfx

The lowlies of Apokolips should be completely human looking, wearing tattered rags in a dirty, oppressive, highly industrialised world.
CGI would be needed for big shots of the planet, and certain inhabitants (parademons, dog cavalry) but most of what actually occurs on the planet could be done practically.

I think Eternals may have more opportunity for success due to Marvel Studios $$$, weight as far as securing and keeping release dates, and marketing able to do.

This on the other hand may be able to stand on it's own feet more as a full-on Jack Kirby type film if Warner's is confident enough to pursue it at the right budget due to not having to fit within as tight of schedule as other massive budget films like Marvel Studio's. I'm not so sure Warner's is able to take the risks though that Marvel now may be able to do (although on flipside can also see perspective being Marvel's got so many dominoes can line up at a time).

What do you guys think?

If Marvel does go with Eternals then the comparisons with this project will be inevitable since they are Kirby influenced. And based on Marvel’s record and having seen Wrinkle in Time, I have more faith in Marvel right now.

And I don’t think DC has a clue on how to budget. They will just throw many at it without solidifying the story first.

I'll admit I don't know much about the Eternals, but The Fourth World by Kirby is simply some of the greatest fiction ever produced.
If DuVernay can bring a piece of it to the big screen it will be magnificent.
I'm hoping it's being planned as a trilogy because there is so much fantastic material in there. There are individual issues that could be adapted into a great film on their own.

I think with the New Line execs in charge (like Walter Hamada as well as Toby Emmerich), WB's next DC titles to go into production will have the scripts finalized and the budgets set.

I would really like to see WB keep the budgets capped at $175M-200M like Marvel has done. Even a Superman sequel can be done at $175M.

Ava is a director who strives to get her movies finished on time and on budget (if not a little under). WB is wise to get a director like her on board.

After checking out 'A Wrinkle In Time' I am a bit worried about this. I found it unwatchable and overblown, with a weak narrative drive. Hope 'New Gods' doesn't suffer in the same way- a big budget with nice visuals but weak characters and a wishy-washy story. Problem coud've been the script but DuVernay should've recognised that. It could easily happen to New Gods, where DuVernay could get caught up in the visuals of the worlds and create vapid archetypal characters like in 'Wrinkle' and just lose control of the whole thing.

Haven't seen AWiT but let's hope that DuVernay and tptb recognise the problem and take steps not to repeat those mistakes.

Wrinkle was boring and leaned too hard into the “girl power” thing instead of just being a fun movie.

The source material wasn't movie material to begin with, yeah i said it lol. I still trust Ava though.

I think Ava was blinded by that, thinking it was a good story because of the themes of female empowerment, wise characters, romantic ideals etc. All that was actually too obvious, too on-the-nose, and not really explored in any great depth. Yes it's basically a children's story but I just don't think it is a very successful big budget family movie.

Some of the visuals and idealism made me think that it could be good for the world of New Genesis. But 'New Gods' is more than that.

I will check out Ava's movie 'Selma'- that definitely will be edgier and more adult.

Wrinkle in Time had Reese Witherspoon deciding to play a Johnny-Depp-as-Wonka-esque pedophile. Neither DuVernay nor anyone couldn’t spin that into something watchable.

Ava would've had a big part in the creation of that character and how it was played- from casting, to working on the character with the actor, to directing the actor.

And it wasn't just Reese that was bad. From Oprah to that little boy.

The whole tone of the movie is bad and that is largely on the director.

But still, this movie wasn't filmable. In fact my opinion came from the Thug Notes summery i saw on YouTube (awesome web series btw). When i saw that cliffnotes of the book i was like WTF??? are you serious??

Hmm I don't know about putting the blame on everything but Ava.

LMAO, Thug Notes was awesome. And yes the story of AWIT is ....bat**** insane

:funny: That was better than the movie! And actually even more grounded! The movie cuts out a lot of those things, and just simplifies the ideas and makes them (even more) overblown. Even the characterisations and costumes of Oprah, Reese and Mindy's characters (Mrs Which etc.)...it's all just too much.

I read reviews and many fans of the book were not happy with what the movie did to what is a beloved classic, what it cut out and changed. (I remember friends in high school had to study the novel for their English class and loved it.) Blame can't be all on the book, but what is done with it.

I guess the issue here is adaptation. 'New Gods' has crazy ideas too, maybe not as crazy as 'A Wrinkle in Time', but there is a danger in losing what works and overdoing it on some things, and not grounding those ideas (yes that would be hard to do for 'Wrinkle'.) Let's just hope Ava is able to do that.

Can't blame the man for shooting his shot. Thank goodness he has UPGRADE on his resume, otherwise he's just Tom Hardy-lite.

What mcu movie was he in?
