Supergirl Movie

Melissa is the perfect mix of hotness and cuteness. Not so ridiculously hot to be intimidating to talk to, friendly enough face to be able to strike up a conversation with. Wasn't fond of her hair bangs looks though. Too bad I think her talents are wasted on these cheap TV shows, her personality and charisma would work well for rom-com movies.

The movie was a dog breakfast but she was perfectly cast. The 2 Disk DVD they released about 15 years ago has supplemental behind the scenes material that was significantly better than the actual film.

I liked the first little bit of the movie, but things just got way too weird with the villain. The Kara stuff and her at school, etc wasn't too awful though.

Melissa is amazing...and I think she's absurdly beautiful...but I would ASSUME they would want to go as young as possible for the character, since the character is probably generally thought of as young. I dont know...maybe I'm wrong.

Madison Iseman is 23, I think. I bet she's in the running.

I'm not going to get sucked into debating Snyder here, despite Flickchick85's bait, this isn't the place.

Far more concerned about getting someone with acting talent than someone who looks a certain way. I cannot muster the energy to care about how "sharp" Supergirl looks.
The nature of hollywood means that anyone who doesn't meet certain standards of "beauty" won't get anywhere near an audition, that's harmful enough without the few candidates who make it through that filter being subjected to further looks based scrutiny.
When I saw there were a few new pages of discussion here I was disappointed to found out it was mostly about her appearance.

If I have to think about it, I'd probably veer towards casting a non-white actress in order to play into the refugee aspect (braces for anti-racebending responses).

Uh, hi, rude. I'm neither the first person who bashed a Superman in this convo, nor the first person to bring up the comparison of the Supermen. I just joined the ongoing conversation by chiming in with my opinion on the matter that was currently being discussed. You not liking that opinion doesn't make it bait.

Sorry, it was meant as a joke, but I can see the tone wasn't clear. I didn't mean to rude but reading it back that is how it sounds.

I apologise.

Ah, no worries, I should've figured as much as that would've been out of character for you. Sorry for jumping to conclusions. :) I'm just grumpy today.

Nah, it was my fault, I was careless and should have paid more attention to how it might sound.
Rereading it, it does appear like an unprovoked attack. It was thoughtless of me.
I'm going to have to start living in this century and start using emojis.

I'm more in favor of her being white, but what I would question is you complaining about people talking about how they'd like her to look, only to then say something about how you'd like her to look.

It's not something I take an interest in because it doesn't make much of a difference, unless it makes some kind of a point.
Having a non-white actress make a point that goes beyond the purely aesthetic. If you are telling a story about her struggling to fit in to life in the US, then I think it would make sense to her not be white.
A choice between a dozen blonde white women of equal talent has no real thematic implication.

I was trying to take something I saw as unimportant and tried to turn to something that was.

flickchick was saying she wanted Kara to look like a teen. MCU King was saying he wanted her to look genetically enhanced. I don't see a distinction. You don't have to care about those particular factors, but I don't see any point in general in complaining about someone discussing something that doesn't mean anything to you. People discuss things I don't care about on this forum, sometimes repeatedly, but when people discuss actor appearances suddenly anyone who doesn't want to discuss that particular thing has to be vocal about it. When films and TV are a visual experience, and that's part of what goes into them.

If you want to bring up something you consider important, then cool, but even then you were preemptively complaining about the idea of people disagreeing with you. Some people are going to want her to be white, and some people are going to want her to be blonde, and some people are going to want her to look like Helen Slater. That's discussion for you.

I personally dont want a teen Kara and would prefer young adult....and thus I think my perfect choice right now would be Erin Moriarty from The Boys.

I've been on the Erin Moriarty train since 2013...and while I am glad to see others namedropping her, I cant help but think that its only because she is already playing another superhero.

But yeah...if they picked a mid-20's actress, I'm down for her or maybe Casimere Jollette...or heck...the wonderful actress in my avatar, Virginia Gardner (who...granted, recently played a superhero on Runaways). I used to really think that Hannah Kasulka would make a great Supergirl...but she's in her early 30's by now.

WB already has a full slate of DC movies, in various states of development, leading into 2025 or so.

Amidst a pandemic, where films like Tenet unfortunately bomb and lose WB millions... would they really greenlight new DC films now?
what if they feel the future is streaming their movies.... albeit with a lower budget... or bigger budgeted tv series...

Imagine if HBO max decides to continue the DCEU or snyderverse whatever you want to call it, as event series..

I would enjoy to see a new Supergirl movie if it's a thing of its own and the result doesn't feel lika a "poor man's Superman".
For the actress, acting talent is equally important as good looks. I wouldn't be against someone semi-known either. It really doesn't have to be a total newcomer.

Absolutely. It needs both. She's got to look the part and be able to act it.

What about the choice of actress? Will it work if Kara is played by a face we've seen before, if it's not a big star?
I don't mind whether it's a new face or one that we know, so long as the right look and ability are the overriding factors (rather than hiring a 'marquee name' that isn't actually such a good fit).

I was thinking of AnnaSophia Robb but she's closing in on 30 soon.

Imogen Poots is another that would suit Supergirl but she's even older.

Hollywood is too obsessed with women's age to even consider them. It's a big shame.
If it was about a male character, it wouldn't be a problem at all.

Five years ago or so, both actresses COULD have done it.

How old is she typically portrayed as again?

because she is....
Mid to late teens.

A mid teen would not be allowed to work at CatCo.
She's older in the CW series

20-21 is a good middle ground IMO.
