I have a question, has Meyer ever on on the record as to why she made her vampire sparkle?

I don't know about the sparkling in particular, but she does have an interview on the Twilight dvd saying that she made her vampires different because that's part of the fun of being an author, ie you can do what you want to any sort of mythology.

So basically, you can **** with years and years of great mythology?

Lol honestly though, I think it would have been a decent series if Bella and Edward werent so over the top and if the vamps didnt sparkle.

Hey, if no one altered mythology, we wouldn't have some of the best takes on it to this day.

Every one messes with mythology in fairness, I mean take people's beloved Near Dark for example, where
blood transfusions fully reverse the effects of Vampirism regardless of how long one has been a Vampire for.

Messing with mythology is not a big deal.

Most of the revered attributes of vampires and werewolves that everyone is complaining about her changing....weren't even created until the 30's and 40's. The writers frim the UNIVERSAL movies screwed with years and years of great mythology.

The way it was described in the books is much better. :o

I agree, but at least Universal did it well.

very true... according to the book Dracula the Prince of Darkness's abilities were very different from what was shown on movies. He never changed into a bat, could effect weather, change into mist and could go out into the sunlight with no ill effects. It was the Universal movie guys who added the stuff we think of when we think of vampires and Dracula

Don't have any books on hand but they're sparkly like diamonds. It enhances their beauty, doesn't make them look like they pasted a layer of glitter goop skins. It was something interesting that didn't translate well.

I still think vampires sparkling is dumb. they arent fairies.

OK....don't watch the movies and don't buy the books then. The thing is....apparently some people like it....or it wouldn't be the craze that it it. Just because you don't understand or like it doesn't make it bad or wrong...it makes it something you don't understand or like that others do.

Lots of mythologies don't have sparkling fairies...

Right...I saw an episode of TORCHWOOD where the faries were anything but sparkly and sweet....they were big ugly murderous demons.

lol vampires are meant to be the epitome of beauty to lure their prey, she was just trying to make them even more irresistible in sunlight. In the books they'd use it to bedazzle their victims so they could feed without a fight. They didn't glitter/sparkle subtly like in the movies, they reflected the light like a diamond. I like her take on the mythos, but it ain't everyone's cup of tea, and it certainly is something that didn't translate well as I said before. You think it's dumb? Fair. Whatever. Enjoy your loathing. :o

I dont hate it, theres some things I rather like about the series, just not the sparkling and I dont like how overdetailed everything is. And I do think that it is poorly written based on that reason(and a few others) but I dont HATE it. Again, there are some things I really like about the series. And I never said it was wrong to like the series....

And im still going to see the movies. Its just my opinion. Because I dont like it, I shouldnt read it or watch the movies? At least I can judge it knowning the material. I bet if I didnt read it and said it sucks that someone would say that I should read it and reserve judgement. Yet I have and now you're telling me to not watch/read it? I dont get it. Isnt it a good thing to judge a movie or a book if youve actually watched/read it?

Did I say all fairies sparkle? No I didnt. Anyways, it was a joke I wasnt being totally seriously.....

Ok, that makes more sense, definetly, i guess i just have the movie image stuck in my head.

And im not ''loathing'', its just one thing i dont care for. But you did explain it better and it does give me a better understanding as to why that is. I still dont think they should sparkle. When I think of vampires, I think of dark, evil creatures. But thats just me.

Haha. I agree with that though.

I just find the way Meyer wrote the relationship between Bella and Edward kind of... creepy. Their relationship seems more like an obsession IMO. Edward is kind of a creeper too. And I just cant stand how weak Bella is. You'd think that since a woman writes it, she would have a strong female character.... I guess its just the Buffy fan in me talking, but I like it when girls dont have to depend on a man for everything and they kick ass.

And I really dont think we needed all the ''he's so beautiful'' lines. I mean, she even things his breath is amazing! Seriously? Now thats just a little bit much.

But like I said, there are some things I can appreciate. I lvoe their abilities(Edwards mindreading, Alice seeing the future etc), I love the way their eyes look, and I like the wolf pack.

Thats seems to be the problem as we've all just known vamps as evil dark gothic creatures and we or some just can't grasp the concept of something different. I think over the years all we've had is action, dark, bloody, gothic toned vampire movies and this is probably the most high profiled vamp movie thats not called Blade/Underworld to come out.
I watched both movies and never read the books, and going in to watch these movies I knew what they weren't and what they were. So, I just accepted the movies for what they were trying to be and cater too;teenage-young women, and I didn't expect them to be carbon copies of UW/Blade....So,at that they were good and they suceeded in bringing in the women targeted audience(sorry, but they weren't targeting us men at all,and maybe some are just plain bitter ;))..So, let the women have their movies like Titanic, and Twilight god knows most movies are geared toward us guys..

True, true, very true. I just think it could have been a bit better if she kept them just a tad closer to the other kind of vampires. And if she toned down the relationship between Bella and Edward. I just prefer the other kind of vampires. The ''normal'' ones(to me at least). I dont care for the sparkly, depressing kind :p

J/k. Though I do find Edward a tad depressing at times.

According to whom? If you look back at Vampire lore you'll see that Vampires were originally portrayed as Demonic looking monsters. In some cultures Vampires are described as looking like walking corpses.

Well actually the book says that when Vampires step into the sunlight they sparkled as if their body is covered in little bits of diamonds.
