Fully agree with this  I wish he'd go back to that standard of writing.

I'm no big Slott defender (just look at my previous comment lol) but in all fairness to him, Spider-Man/Human Torch was about as safe as a story can get. It's meant to be viewed through a nostalgic lens and not upset any status quo so much as make the reader recall memories of charming Lee/Ditko/Romita era books.

You can't play it safe indefinitely in an ongoing series. Readers would become bored and dissatisfied with anything more than the occasional story arc resembling that (for example that issue with the Fantastic Four when Johnny "died").

Now, if he can't do either--e.g. can't wax nostalgia onto the paper OR produce a consistently well-written comic that has good characterization etc.--then he should give up the title. But I've been at that point with him for awhile now.

There's also his whole mission to upset longtime readers, even as recent as [BLACKOUT]Clone Conspiracy[/BLACKOUT].

Alright can we drop this now? I'm a LONG time reader, probably longer than most of you, and the Clone storyline isn't upsetting me. In fact it's off to a good start.

Slott is NOT writing this cartoon. Can we keep the conversation on this new animated series that is finally replacing Ultimate?

I swear if we see that crap-tier villain Regent in this series......

Well, I wonder how much this new animated series will tie into the movies?

I think just like Avengers Assemble was created to fall in line with the MCU, this new Spidey show will likewise fall in line with Homecoming. Not that it will be canon, like what they are doing with Rebels, but I expect Flash to look like he does in the film, Ned will be Pete's friend, and there will be a character Michelle (if she is in fact just a character Michelle and not turn out to be MJ).

Wouldn't be shocked, but I'm sure there will be deviations. I'm sure things like the Vulture's design, etc. will reflect what they're doing for Homecoming though.

I hope Flash, if he's in at least gets beefed up. I don't mind Flash being ethnically altered, but he should be more imposing in the toon. Physicality plays into his essence.

I hope they don't take any inspiration from Homecoming. Use the comics for creative decisions. That's something that annoys the heck out of me with Avengers Assemble, everything looks MCU-Inspired as opposed to comic-inspired like Earth's Mightiest Heroes. (which was part of the reason it was cancelled. ) I won't even bother with this show if it looks like Homecoming.

I'll probably check it out regardless, but I do agree with harryo., the comics should be the guiding light above MCU. It's okay to tie into the MCU visually and with some cues but if everything reflects that, then what's different?

Although I think there will be more variation between the films and this show than some think.

Also, I've never watched a full episode of Avengers Assemble and only 1 or 2 of USM.

Those shows make me sad.

I agree. Even if Homecoming turns out to be good, I still don't want a Homecoming inspiration. Bad enough we're getting Horizon High and everything else.

Fully agree with this . It's actually one of the reasons why, and I know I'll be in the minority with this opinion, I wanted the new cartoon to be based with him in college/adulthood. Homecoming is already giving us a high school Spidey for, according to Feige, about 3 movies.

If Horizon was going to be involved, I would've hoped he'd be interning there or something (like he was at ESU in SSM). It also leaves the almost guaranteed fact that the Horizon scientists will make up his main supporting cast rather than the Midtown pupils. I just hope they actually put the Bugle in this, although with Slott involved I wouldn't be surprised if they went with the Fact Channel instead.

I would've preferred the intern route myself, but I guess we'll see how it goes. I imagine Max Modell will be the principal? With maybe the other scientists from the comics as his classmates? Eh. Not my favorite idea. Would be pretty cool to see an animated Uatu Jackson though.

As far as Fact Channel vs. Daily Bugle, I love the Bugle and it is so classic, but I wouldn't imagine Peter will be a photog in this if he's busy with lab work so maybe Fact Channel will be present with no Bugle.

I actually would be down with an older Spider-man, either like in the 90s series or he's already a young adult like the PS4 game. Spectacular was awesome, but I've wanted to see a Spidey show that starts in the middle, so that we get to see him deal with some issues that come from being a more seasoned hero and man. I wanna see him and MJ married and facing the challenges of living in this wacky world, but finding strength in each other. The closest we came to that was a few seconds of Spider-man Unlimited. We've never had a married Pete and MJ other than that.

Well, we had Peter marrying cloned MJ in TAS. :o

In all seriousness, I'd love to see something like this, but I don't think we ever will in a serialized form on a kid's channel. That's why PeterBenParker and I agreed in another thread that we'd love to see some original animated movies from Marvel based on various eras of Peter's life, e.g. Master Planner arc, The Night Gwen Stacy Died, Kraven's Last Hunt, the Clone Saga, what have you. That would scratch that itch best (and most realistically) I think.

That's the thing I've wanted for ages. When Marvel was steadily releasing DVD movies like the Hulk vs. I had high hopes, but then those stopped entirely. I'm hoping Hulk: Where Monsters Dwell reignites Marvel doing those.

When I was younger, I had a blast with Maximum Carnage and Separation Anxiety the games (was disappointed with the comics) so that was the first one I wanted, but back in the 90s such animated ventures for Marvel where unheard of and they didn't even have successful theater movies till the end of that decade with Blade. Having a more adult oriented Spidey show is why I initially was drawn to the CG MTV Spider-Man, buuuuuuut.....things soured quickly unfortunately. I'd love a series of Spidey movies that could present things darker than a Y7 but don't get comical with the adult rating freedom.

Definitely would love to see an animated Kraven's Last Hunt and more classic Doc Ock is always welcome.

Part of the reason I wanted an animated MaxCarnage was because of the scale of the madness and well...carnage for lack of a better word. It would be cool to see a Spidey story that's got other NYCers struggling for survival against a city gone mad. Like the other animated adaptations, I more than welcome some changes and summarizing.

I did too, to be honest. A college/adult Spidey means a more experienced and comfortable Spider-Man, which I've always enjoyed.

I think it'll be a mix but I'm afraid characters like Gwen, MJ, Harry (all possibly) will be Horizon based, whether it be interns or something like that.

Either way, not a fan of that influence.

Wonderful post. I was so bummed in regards to Spider-Man Unlimited 'cause I LOVE Rino Romano and Jennifer Hale and I would've loved to see more of their Peter and MJ. Only little of that, besides that, was the Spider-Man PSX game I believe although that was more brief than Spider-Man Unlimited. :csad:

Marvel is so timid of an adult Peter/Spidey 'cause "hur dur, he's growing up or he's older so therefore he's no longer relatable" so they just panic and put him in high school. Either that, or he's a big man-child (Slott-Man).

Another solid post and I basically agree with everything stated. I can only hope when it's time for someone new to take over, we can see a much more broader variety of Peter/Spidey as opposed to just Silk, Venom, Spider-Gwen, etc. Definitely don't think that'd harm the Spidey brand as it would more so expand and offer different things to different people.

Conway's RYV is a step in the right direction and I hope to see stuff like that continue.

I agree with you guys. I wish it wasn't set in High-school. Would've been nice and fresh to have a College-aged Spider-Man or adult teacher Spidey who's married to MJ as opposed to High-school, newbie Spidey AGAIN. But I won't fret too much if it's as good as Spectacular.

Call this being negative just to be negative if you will, but I can already predict right now it won't be as good as Spectacular.

Better than USM? Easy.
Better than SSM? Frig no.

As long as Slott's involved, we'll see a mixed bag that teeters on good-or-bad depending on the material and ideas. May be my anti-Slott bias talking but meh. :oldrazz:
