Rhino is a cross species character, I don't like it.

Good morning, dear SHH users! Long-time lurker here. My name is Yan Eden and I am a big fan of Peter Parker (my first familiarization was through John Semper's excellent 90's series).

Since we are celebrating Spider-Man's 55th anniversary (it happened 6 days ago on the 10th of August, 1962 with the release of Amazing Fantasy #15 by Steve Ditko and Stan Lee), I decided to create my very first YouTube video (and that was quite scary actually, to go out there and try to make it all work... it was a pure improv, this whole session), where I share my thoughts on not only Marvel's Spider-Man (the more I see from it the more I realize that my intuition was correct all the time), but also on a somewhat confusing state of Spidey in general (various mediums, different portrayals, different comic book writers and how he is being misrepresented by quite a lot of individuals in charge).

[YT]2ILCTco-9vo[/YT]

I put a lot of effort into this one, because I genuinely love Spidey and his mythology, so please, do not take it as me disowning the character or something like that. I love Peter Parker and I would NEVER do anything that would cause any harm to him (I only feel the need to oppose those who are doing poor Pete Parker a disservice; had some difficulties with my sound file during my vid's post-conversion, but I made sure to include special subtitles/CCs):

* Spider-Man's 55th Anniversary (1962-2017): extensive discussion of comics (from Ditko to Slott), films (from Raimi to Watts), animated series (from Semper to Disney), action figures, video games, funky music included, special appearances and so much more in this packed mini-documentary about the essence of Peter Parker! #CreativeSpiderManAt55

Good morning Yan, I'd like to see more of your thoughts of this show after this intro.

Thank you, dear Spider-Aziz! If I am correct, we've got 3 more days till we get to see the first two episodes. I wasn't that impressed by the origin shorts and certain commercials (pre-SDCC/post SDCC) that they put out online recently (same goes for their BTS featurette... some questionable narrative choices (Horizon High, early pointless references to Iron Man's influence, stuff like that), some weird casting bits and fusions 'Josh, ahem, Keaton, ahem as stormin' Norman', but we'll see).

I am still on the fence about their animation style (looks wonky and stale, and Spidey, as you know, was always about having enough fluidity of movement, energy rush and this exciting air ballet, as Sam Raimi once described it, of sorts - TAS had it, Unlimited had it, MTV and Spectacular owned it) and the fact that this is, yet, another 'Spider-Men/Spider-Women' mashup (after the failure that was USM where proper standalone stories were nowhere to be seen) that they decided to produce instead of allowing Peter to breath some fresh air and to have his own show be about his actual personal life without any other super-powered spider-people.

I don't even want to go into details about how I am disturbed and annoyed by this version of Pete geeking out way too much (without even assuming the role of Spidey) and being a crappy vlogger of sorts (that cringeworthy humor, oh the humanity!). But, in other words, I am willing to give it a chance.

Nicely done , was pretty interesting

And welcome to the Hype

Listening to Joe Quesadilla talk about the importance of telling a great Peter Parker story is down right hilarious.
Especially when you go back and listen closely to one of his last conversations with JMS (I think the original CBR article with their full, shall we say, 'creative' discussion, is still there).

I honestly don't know what happened to the guy (that's what clearly occurs when one makes a pact with Mephisto himself), but he looks even worse than he did back during that 2002 recording of Spider-Man: The Mythology of the 21st century DVD extras for Sam Raimi's 1st film.

Also, while we're at it, I sort of tried to interpret his evil deeds visually at a 4 m20s mark (it's a blink & you'll miss it moment, but it's really worth it + added with a special venomous audio surprise).

Eh I think I have to see more of it. They may be taking inspiration from the Spider-Gwen version. If the only thing different is that he's mutated and doesn't have a suit, I think it might be fine. As long as its not like USM cartoon Rhino.

Well that was 15 years ago...the guy got older. I'll bash Joe Q on a lot of things but this seems like an odd one to point out.

From the vibe I'm getting of this so far, every villain will either be related to one school for gifted minds or the other one, the possibility of this take on Rhino sharing similarity with USM animated Rhino is there.

If it's a kid again who was often bullied, I can see the resemblance.

There's a substantial number of mutates (Rhino, Jackal, Man-Wolf) along with tech-based dudes (Vulture, Scorpion, Smythe) if those are the different gifted schools you're talking about.

We don’t have a villain of the week kind of format. The stories interweave and villains come in and out and it moves quickly. But, at the same time, there’s always a very grounded Peter Parker personal story in every episode. That’s the story of the week. What does Peter learn, or how does he grow? So all the stuff around him can move as fast as we want it to as long as that Peter story is grounded.

No villains are off limits, but we do want to parse them out in a smart way and hold some back for later seasons, because we want there to be fresh stories to tell. It’s always a Peter story, and the villains service that story. A lot of villains come back frequently. It’s rare that we have a story with one villain because life is more complicated than that. And what’s really going on with the villains is not so straightforward.

I meant the schools for geniuses, I think one video mentions Harry going to a different school than the one Peter goes to.

-somewhat spoiler-
Yeah Harry goes to the competiting Osborn counterpart: Oz School or something

This won't be a big step up from USM cartoon, nope, nu-uh.

Making Otto a 17 yr old? Ooooo boy. Here we go again.

And I thought BH6 was going to lean on that quite heavily.

I meant the schools for geniuses, I think one video mentions Harry going to a different school than the one Peter goes to.

And then I came up with this idea of “Hogwarts for Science.” So not only is it Horizon High, but then of course Norman Osborn gets a whiff of it, and, for his own reasons which you’ll see in the series, he opens up Osborn Academy. And the original school, Midtown High, still exists. So you’ve got this triumvirate of schools who are competing with each other and, throughout the series, heroes and villains will come from those schools.
Damn you called it.

Spider-Aziz, I just finished watching the Horizon High episode. Unfortunately, I couldn't respond to it or find any adherent personal points, no matter how hard I tried. This is, yet, another Spidey series without any kind of memorable and exciting intro (they went for their old USM approach again: minimal combined with some odd, brief audio track).

The story was dragging for way too long, and every bit of expository dialogue, character interaction (not feeling it with Pete/Harry, Max/Pete, so strange it all was), humor (I didn't like how he was blabbering about his insecurities and dealing with an old lady and one of the pigeons, while NYC's finest had to deal with crooks and have a shootout with no interference from Spidey: only for them to prolong it to an unexciting, computer-generated chase scene), action felt rather bland, cold and unexciting to me.

The animation graphics are just ridiculous and I don't remember being that uninterested in both Spidey's movements, the landscape and overall vibe of NYC (a place where I spent a big chunk of my childhood and that I was always excited to see thanks to the colorful comics of the late 90's, early Spidey runs and John Semper Jr's TAS).

What's even worse is that all the action set pieces that involved Spidey fighting the Vulture (synergy aside, I just don't like him being some hired high-tech goon: 90's TAS was great at combining certain elements from Ditko, Stern and Michelinie's versions, whereas Weisman and Englund made him really menacing and a force to be reckoned with in SSM) didn't impress me in any fashion imaginable and this is not what you want from an aerial confrontation between some of the most iconic characters in Marvel Comics. Despite some of their flaws here and there, both SM: Unlimited and MTV's Spidey always knew how to make the action parts stand out and matter.

Overall, I don't think I will be sticking around (no pun intended) to find out if it gets any better. The shorts didn't do it for me and if I am already looking at my watch during the pilot, then it means that the show's creators didn't do their best to make sure their new corporate product truly stands out and makes a difference in the world where a lot of other shows are experimenting with style, storyline narrative and visuals.

Every Spidey fan, no matter for how long he or she had an association with the character, definitely has his/her own limits and, I suppose, so I just cannot bear to see how they have turned this amazing and complex superhero into some simplified, downgraded copy of his former self.

The best way to describe this, tone-wise & conceptually at times, is if they took season one of The Flash and made it a cartoon as much as that felt like a live-action Spidey thing. It was a pretty shaky premiere, but an ok start nonetheless. Hope there's more to Smythe and Vulture than the campy way they introduced them here.

From what I've seen, USM is better. At least that has better animation, This lacks in writing and visuals.

I recall the 1st couple of ep to USM being so obnoxious that it started the backlash against it.

Oh it was obnoxious and the series went even worse from that. Im just saying that it had good animation and this has ugly animation, and Peter is imo even more annoying than the already annoying USM Peter
