Jay in New X-men was such a bad mistake. It was obvious that his inclusion was forced. N&C had no original plans for him but were forced to add him to their roster when New Mutants was relaunched as New X-men. They never did anything with him and all he did was occupy the 6th space on the team

They actually showed certain bird-like attitudes he had, and he tried to comfort his teammates, he didn't have a spotlight, but he wasn't ignored either.

well of course he wasnt completely ignored but he was filler material. He was written very generic and anything he did could have easily been replaced by any of the other students that werent front burner. He didnt really have a distinct voice or personality in NX:AX. N&C spent more time focusing on and developing the other 5 New Mutants and Hellion. Those 6 were the stars of the book; Josh aka Jay Guthrie wasnt
